“Wonka” will make its streaming debut exclusively on Max on Friday, March 8, Warner Bros. Discovery announced Friday.

You can watch Timothée Chalamet’s charming chocolatier in Uhd very soon. More on the Wonka 4K Uhd, Blu-ray and DVD release here.
Paul King’s charming, thoroughly lovely Wonka has been doing well for itself. The film, which debuted in cinemas in December, has just crossed the $500m mark at the global box office.
The film follows a young Willy Wonka as he arrives in Europe with a head full of dreams and chocolate recipes. He faces a gang of rival chocolatiers, but nothing can come between Willy and his sweeties, it seems.
The film was critically acclaimed, with many praising Chalamet’s performance and King’s direction. Our own Simon Brew found the film “flat-out brilliant, brimming with magic, confidence, colour and life.” You can read more about his feelings on the film here.

Gene Wilder delivered such a perfectly eccentric performance in 1971's beloved classic "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" that it's hard to imagine anyone else in the role. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp tried to make Roald Dahl's world their own back in 2005 with mixed results and a much more zany, quirky take on the character went in a much different direction.
When it comes to "Wonka," director Paul King, best known for the delightful "Paddington" movies, attempts to bring a dose of joy and kindness to the chocolatey world of Willy Wonka with an origin story that finds Hollywood's young heartthrob Timothée Chalamet taking on the role of the young chocolatier as he tries to carve out a name for himself in the candy industry in a European town dominated by a chocolate cartel. Run by three titans of the industry, Slugworth (Paterson Joseph), Prodnose (Matt Lucas), and...

You might not be able to tell it from the trailers but Wonka, the latest movie inspired by Roald Dahl’s classic 1964 children’s story “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is, make no mistake about it, a full-on movie musical that I found to be more in the tradition of ’60s-era films like Oliver, Dr. Dolittle, Albert Finney’s Scrooge — basically a throwback to that kind of feel-good musical confection designed to be released during the year’s end.
Unlike 1971’s beloved (but not a hit initially) Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder, or Tim Burton’s darker 2005 take Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Johnny Depp, this version directed Paul King and co-written by King and Simon Farnaby is an origin story of how Willy Wonka came to be Wonka, the magician, inventor and chocolate maker extraordinaire. Both previous films certainly have their legions of fans,...

Paul King is no stranger to exploring the fantastical world of a children’s storybook. After two Paddington films, the dark whimsy of Roald Dahl proved to be an exciting new challenge for the director, who has imagined an origin story for the iconic character of Willy Wonka. In the first trailer for Wonka, in theaters Dec. 15, audiences get a glimpse of this youthful version of the chocolatier, embodied with enthusiastic verve by Timothée Chalamet. It also teases a vast supporting cast that includes Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins,...

Stanley Kubrick ditched the original score for 2001: A Space Odyssey – and replaced it with Ligeti and Strauss. Robert Ziegler reflects on the challenges of conducting live with the film
It is hot and busy in this corner of Australia called Adelaide. The festival atmosphere is town is buoying us all up through long days and late nights, here in the 30+ degrees heat – for me a welcome change from a miserable March in the UK.
I was last here in 2000, to conduct a pair of concerts for the then artistic director (and all round Australian arts heroine) Robyn Archer. Then, it was a series on the east German composer and Brecht collaborator Hanns Eisler, performed with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Adelaide Chamber Singers. These two ensembles are back again this year, to perform in a special project that originated at London's South Bank: 2001 A Space Odyssey – Live.

As the Royal Ballet opens its rehearsal studios for a live video event on 23 March, choreographer Wayne McGregor discusses dancing at Covent Garden – and explains why it's not an artform to be scared of
How did you get started?
By dancing. I was born in the 70s, when John Travolta movies like Saturday Night Fever and Grease were very much in the public eye. I went to disco, ballroom and Latin American dance lessons for years. Later, I did lots of amateur musicals, and ended up going to university to study choreography. I hadn't realised, until then, that it was something you could actually go and study.
Main influences?
My influences change all the time; they have to remain current, because they're the things that capture your imagination and make you want to go into the studio. I tend to look outside the dance world for inspiration: most recently, I've...

SXSW is barely 24 hours away from starting (catch up with part one and part two of our preview pieces here), and at this point, it's important to be reminded that one of the things that makes the festival unique is a particular focus on the crossover between music and film, something that's been a special interest of ours since the very earliest days of The Playlist. SXSW doesn't just have a whole sidebar dedicated to music documentaries (with this year's batch including films centered on LCD Soundsystem, Paul Simon and Big Star), and a music festival that runs alongside, but the films screened seem to attract a disproportionate number of scores by indie and rock musicians.
And with more and more names who broke out from the pop and rock world -- from veteran composers like Danny Elfman and Clint Mansell to newbies like Trent Reznor and The Chemical Brothers -- moving into composition,...

Burke and Hare
Written by Piers Ashworth and Nick Moorcroft
Directed by John Landis
UK, 2010
There have been several films about the infamous true-life grave robbers William Burke and William Hare, including Freddie Francis’s 1985 The Doctor And The Devils and John Gilling’s 1959 The Flesh and The Fiends. Perhaps the most famous is Robert Wise’s 1945 classic The Body Snatcher, which starred both Boris Karloff and Béla Lugosi. You can now add John Landis’s Burke and Hare to the list.
Burke and Hare marks Landis’s first feature theatrical release in twelve years, the last being 1998′s Susan’s Plan. Thankfully the director who gave us such classics as Animal House, An American Werewolf in London, Michael Jackson’s Thriller and The Blues Brothers still has a trick or two up his sleeve. Admittedly his latest feature pales in comparison to his earlier work, but Burke and Hare...

[An indieWIRE review from Reverse Shot.] Somewhere in the guidelines of Britain’s National Lottery, which partly funds the UK Film Council (and thus nearly every British film you’ve seen for the last decade), it must be written that no film will receive backing if it does not include at least one of the following: an adorable little boy; a score by former Divine Comedy composer/arranger Joby Talbot; a fond but miserablist …...

Upcoming Film Scores lists the ten most exciting, promising and anticipated film scores of 2009, according to its editor Mikael Carlsson who can't wait to hear what will come out musically of these projects:
1. Avatar (James Horner)
Director James Cameron and composer James Horner are of course best known for the multi-zillion-whatever-megahit Titanic, but they also gave us Aliens in 1986 which stands out as one of the most exciting nailbiter scores in sci-fi history. On that film, Cameron gave Horner a pretty hard time as judging from the composer interview on the special edition DVD, and basically what you hear in the film is the result of a composer writing under enormous pressure. On Avatar, the situation is the complete opposite. A luxury in film scoring today, the total time given to the scoring process on this film will probably exceed one year! Horner is currently working exclusively on this film,...
