We’ve talked about Stephen King as the king of horror literature, but there’s another name who is pretty important in the grand scheme of horror. He has had tabletop games, video games, comic book adaptations, and movies made after his work. He has sort of become like John Carpenter in a way. You hear all the time how a movie, or its score in particular, is Carpenter-esque and that has happened to one Howard Phillips Lovecraft. He only lived to 46 and had many works published after his death, but also is the man behind the old gods and the Cthulhu mythos. Even when filmmakers and game designers don’t use creations directly from the author’s work, a lot of horror can be considered Lovecraftian. While some of the more famous ones like Re-Animator and From Beyond are stone cold classics, I wanted to look at an underseen adaptation.

This article contains spoilers for the entirety of Lost.
ABC’s classic genre hit Lost is remembered fondly in the annals of TV for many reasons. The J.J. Abrams co-created series (that was eventually shepherded by Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse) understood the fundamentals of its storytelling mission well. The characters were satisfyingly complicated, the philosophy was on point, and the mysteries were intriguing.
And *whispers* guess what: the ending was good. But we can argue that particular point some other day. Because right now, it’s time to talk about another, and perhaps the most important, reason why Lost was remembered fondly: its dedication to near constant shocking twists and turns.
As an episodic TV series in the mid-2000s, before the streaming binge model took off, Lost needed a way to keep viewers interested in returning for its sprawling sci-fi saga week after week. And the formula it...

While the sword and sorcery genre dominated genre cinema in the first half of the eighties, thanks to the influence of Conan the Barbarian, one film predates this trend. That movie is – Hawk the Slayer! If you’re based in the UK, you might be saying to yourself, “oh man, Hawk the Slayer rules,” or maybe, “Hawk the Slayer sucks.” But, if you’re outside English, you’re probably thinking, Wtf is Hawk the Slayer?
This is a big-budget UK attempt at a blockbuster that arguably owes more to the influence of Star Wars (mainly its box office) than anything else. It was meant to start a blockbuster film saga, but underwhelming box office and withering reviews meant this was a one-off. The brainchild of writer-director Terry Marcel, the film stars John Terry (later famous as Jack’s dad on Lost and a one time Felix Leiter in The Living Daylights...

Exclusive: Bedlam, the small, critically acclaimed Off Broadway theater company known for its clever, spare and unconventional stagings of classics like The Crucible and Saint Joan, is developing Bedlam: The Series, an eight-episode New Media mash-up of Shakespeare plays using the Bard’s own language.
The series, to be released on an as-yet-unannounced platform, begins filming this month in New York City and New York’s Hudson Valley.
Written by Bedlam artistic director Eric Tucker and Musa Gurnis and directed by Tucker, the series will combine characters and plots from King Lear, The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Merchant of Venice and other plays in an all-new story.
“As a theatre company, most immediately, we need to adapt to our current situation and find ways of staying alive,” Tucker said, “creating content that serves our mission and vision, while assuring the well-being and livelihood of our regular artists and staff.

Kingsman pulls the leg of the James Bond series - but how have the 007 films put across the relationship between Britain and the USA?
When Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service exploded into cinemas in 2015, it gave the iconic James Bond franchise much the same irreverent treatment that the director's previous Mark Millar adaptation, Kick-Ass, gave to comic book movies. Reviews focused on how the film recontextualised the familiar 007 tropes of guns, girls and gadgets through the lens of class, identity and that notorious final bum note.
In the sequel, Eggsy and the Kingsmen run up against a crime syndicate known as the Golden Circle with a little help from their American cousins, the Statesmen. It neatly shows us that American iconography plays much the same role for their opposite numbers, that liquor-themed codenames will stand in for Arthurian monikers, and most accurately of all, that...

Money in the world of football has become a big talking point within the game. Be it transfer fees, ticket prices, imaging and TV rights, or even the odd FIFA related bribing scandal, the financial element of the game will now always be questioned. With figures nearly exceeding £100,000,000 for a single player it’s beginning to feel that clubs can demand stupid money for any player within their squad. You only have to look at players like Dwight Gayle, Jake Livermore, and Robert Snodgrass who are being bought for £10 million plus. I mean, Crystal Palace bought Jeffery Schlupp for £12 million! Am I missing something here? It’s like money doesn’t have any value within the game anymore.
Of course, there are some transfers that warrant clubs splashing out large amounts of money to get their man. Players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Luis Suarez, and Neymar to name a few.

Inevitably, the last day of the transfer window dawned as surely as it always does around the Emirates: as Jim White filled himself with sugar for his shouty evening slot on Sky Sports News, Arsene Wenger was already saying he was 99% sure he would be doing no business. Which is exactly what he says 99% of the time, whether he’s intent on signing anyone or not. He doesn’t seem keen on John Terry though.
To be frank, Arsenal’s squad needs more development: they haven’t been in as strong a position to win the league for some time, and if they want to pip Leicester to the title, there is still work to be done. Particularly since Arsenal players seem to have a far higher probability of getting lengthy injuries than anyone else.
It isn’t all just about incoming transfers either:...

Chelsea have bid £45 million for Everton defender John Stones, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.
This is the fourth offer the reigning Barclays Premier League champions have made for the England international, after seeing three bids knocked back by the Toffees last summer. Their final bid of £37million was point-blank refused by Roberto Martinez, despite Stones filing a formal transfer request.
Now, The Blues see the 21-year-old as the man to martial their leaky defence after setting off on one of the worst Premier League title defences of all time.
Towards the end of Jose Mourinho’s reign, both John Terry and Gary Cahill were hung out to dry. The players paid the price for numerous bad results Chelsea suffered. Who could forget former England skipper Terry being hauled off at half time at The Etihad during a humiliating 3-0 defeat against Manchester City in August?

At Cobham, Jose Mourinho closes the door to his office and slumps in his chair, fearing the worst. His team look great in training but that would lull weaker managers into a false sense of security. Falcao scored twice with not a hair out of place, Terry was imperious in their usual 5-a-side session. He asks himself, “What am I not seeing?”.
Jose’s phone vibrates. It’s an email from the Fa about his post-match comments after the home defeat to Southampton. Great.
While he is the best manager the Blues have ever in football sentimentality is for the history books and, currently hovering above the relegation zone after eight games, Chelsea’s season has run aground.
It’s not yet the spectacular fall from grace Leeds United experienced in 2004 nor is it the arid ten-year trophy drought that forced Liverpool to hit the panic...

An underrated football player can play for any team in the world. They do not have to play for a poor side and they’re often household names that are simply overshadowed by a ridiculously well-built, Nike endorsed, Portuguese goal predators.
But enough about Swansea City’s Eder. Nowadays, footballers’ performances are inspected by the media’s meticulous magnifying glass every week and fans are now able to view almost every game (if you can work out the migrainously complicated logistics of having both Sky Sports and BT Sport). If you’re playing in isolation (for instance the 12.45pm kick off on Saturday or an 8pm Monday Night Football spectacle in front of Neville and co) then your performance will be hung up like a punch bag and continuously poked, caressed, prodded and sometimes punched until the studio manager turns the fancy touch-screens off.

It’s nearly here. FIFA 16 is ready for release towards the end of September, and just to whet your appetite, you can now try out the hotly-anticipated demo version of the game.
Alongside the demo though, game-makers EA Sports have recently confirmed player ratings for a host of clubs in the new game. The list includes the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester City, Paris Saint Germain and European champions Barcelona.
Each outfit boasts a stream of world-class talent, and even before the main release of FIFA 16 you’re able to test the game out – with the aforementioned clubs – in the demo version.
But this article will bring you a selection of those confirmed ratings. Here, we focus on Premier League champions Chelsea, who powered to the title last season after faltering challenges from former champions Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United.

Knowing exactly who the top players are in each league is becoming more important every year, with Ultimate Team selections jumping to the front of everyone’s mind when it comes to FIFA.
The Premier League is stacked with talent again this year, with a few exciting additions and notable departures sure to have an impact on FIFA 16 when it is launched in the coming weeks, but who will form the elite group of players at the very top of the league ratings?
Falcao, Robin Van Persie, and Eden Hazard were the highest rated Premier League players last season with 88 ratings, though while the latter won the Player of the Season award, the other two flopped. Falcao has now moved to Chelsea desperately looking for an unlikely revival, while Van Persie has left the country for Fenerbache. So which players have stolen their lofty positions? It seems like the 80s is a goldmine of sci-fi and fantasy movies that time forgot. Every other day some movie fan digs up some obscure bit of entertainment that they loved when they were kids and which still holds some nostalgia to a large enough group of people. This story is and isn't exactly that.
Remember Hawk the Slayer? The English high fantasy drama directed by Terry Marcel (who later went on to produce and direct "Dark Knight") co-wrote and directed this tale of knights and sorcery which pits Hawk (John Terry) and Voltan (Jack Palance) as brothers who are at war.

Newcastle United and Sunderland have both been urged to make an audacious move for Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma by Don Hutchison.
The former West Ham United and Black Cats midfielder, who now works as a columnist for The Chronicle, tweeted that the pair should try and hijack Roma’s rumoured offer for the Blues defender.
Zouma replaced John Terry, who was substituted for the first time ever by Jose Mourinho, at half-time of Chelsea’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City at weekend and is rated highly by the Blues boss, although Roma’s rumoured interest suggests a move could be agreed.

And Hutchison tweeted about the 20-year-old:

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was sent off as Chelsea struggled to a draw against a very impressive Swansea City side.
Oscar’s free-kick put the Blues ahead before Andre Ayew made a mockery of John Terry, as a sublime moment of skill allowed the Ghanian to stab a close-range equaliser after Courtois had brilliantly kept out Bafetimbi Gomis’s header.
Federico Fernandez deflected Willian’s cross over his own keeper’s head to restore Chelsea’s lead before the home side’s big Belgian stopper found himself last man and brought down Gomis with a high foot. New signing Asmir Begovic, who replaced the red carded Coutois in goal, failed to stop Gomis’ precise spot-kick.
Gomis, who played like a man possessed for most of the evening, then had a goal disallowed for offside as Garry Monk’s men tried to take advantage of their extra man.

You get two options when it comes to picking defenders for your fantasy football team. Option one (which I selected last season) is to fill it with plucky, affordable shot-blockers who can hopefully take penalty kicks or deliver an outrageously precise delivery into the box.
These guys aren’t going to make your team look pretty, they’re probably going to don the yellow of Norwich City or the black and red stripes of Bournemouth but the acquirement of these 4.0 million men can be crucial. Why? Well, you can now throw your fun tokens Jordan Belfort-style at the midfield. I’m talking the big boys, Eden Hazard, Alexis Sanchez and David Silva are now realistic purchases and all because you have got Michael Turner standing behind them.
Option two (which I should have selected last season) is to pack your back four...

They wanted to make a medieval Fistful of Dollars. They ended up with a cult hit that triggered the sword and sorcery boom. Now, Hawk the Slayer is set to return – with better fights and special effects, but still plenty of cheese
Back in 1980, Terry Marcel kicked off the cinematic sword and sorcery boom that would give us Excalibur, Conan, Dragonslayer and Willow with a low-budget opus called Hawk the Slayer. Shot in six weeks in Buckinghamshire for £600,000, it featured the handsome but wooden John Terry as Hawk, who – with his flying “mindsword” and mismatched allies (witch, elf, dwarf, giant) – sets out to rescue a nun from his own deformed brother Vultan, played by Jack Palance at his scenery-chewing worst. Now, 35 years on, Marcel is finally preparing the follow-up: Hawk the Hunter. It’s not quite the longest a British director has waited to make a sequel to a cult hit,...

Legendary swords-and-sorcery film Hawk the Slayer is to get a sequel, 35 years after the original became a cult hit. The 1980 film, which starred John Terry and Jack Palance, has become a true cult classic – famously referred to in Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes, and Edgar Wright’s seminal comedy Spaced – and a sequel has been talked about since the original film was released.
Rebellion have announced that writer and director Terry Marcel – who helmed the original movie back in 1980 – has agreed with Jason Kingsley OBE, Rebellion’s CEO, on a deal which will see a Kickstarter launched to part-fund the long-talked-about sequel, called Hawk the Hunter. Clearly it's a week for unexpected and belated sequels. A day after the news that Robin Hardy is prepping the final part of his Wicker Man trilogy, comes the revelation that Hawk The Slayer is also set to return, 35 years after his first adventure. Original director Terry Marcel, in cahoots with 2000Ad publishers Rebellion, is about to launch a crowdfunding campaign for Hawk The Hunter.Much beloved of VHS-era schoolboys, the 1980 Hawk starred John Terry (the guy from Lost, not the footballer) as the titular adventurer, with Jack Palance as his scenery-chewing evil older brother Voltan. Casting support came from Brit stalwarts like Bernard Bresslaw and Roy Kinnear. Voltan kills his father and kidnaps a nun. Hawk mounts a rescue mission with a sorceress, a dwarf, an elf, a giant with a big mallet, and the ancient power of the Sword Of Mind. The details of Hawk The Hunter are sketchy at present,...

The first of Timothy Dalton's pair of James Bond 007 adventures. We look back at The Living Daylights...
This one's strong, if uneven. The Living Daylights has a lot going for it, not least a lean, sharkish Timothy Dalton, tight of smile and cold of eye. Other strengths include a plot that actually goes places (even if they aren’t always the right ones), a great soundtrack, a palpably menacing hitman and the enjoyably retro prominence of the Cold War. All well and good. However, the central villains are a weakness, neither really working alone or as a duo. The girl is admirable but a little trying. The pace sometimes flags and the stakes never rise. Despite a standout fight aboard an aeroplane (as good as Bond gets) the film never quite takes off.

John Terry is a hero to some, and a villain to many.
Some blame him for his association with the extravagances of Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea regime, which many see as the beginning of football’s decline into money-driven frenzy. That’s obviously unfair.
But Terry is the only player in recent history to be stripped of the England captaincy twice.
He’s been the captain of Chelsea for 11 years, but he’s proved himself to be a terrible role model in that time.
Terry’s courted controversy since his earliest days in the game. He started out with a reputation as a Jack-The-Lad, drinking, clubbing, and living the Life of Riley on his high wage-packet.
And if that was the only blot on his copy book, then he’d be a misunderstood pariah. But he isn’t. Terry’s made more mistakes than a dyslexic child in a spelling bee.

Watch out Calum Best and Keith Chegwin - glamour model and notorious tabloid kiss-and-teller Alicia Douvall has entered the Celebrity Big Brother house.
The 35-year-old (ahem) mother-of-two seemed fairly nonchalant as she joined fellow housemates including Patsy Kensit, Perez Hilton and Kavana.
We vaguely recall photos of the star suffering intentional nipple-slips outside Café de Paris or stumbling out of China White in the early noughties, but that's about it.
So allow us to refresh your memory with a reminder of her most controversial comments, conquests and reality TV show appearances below:
1. Celebrity conquests
Glamour model Alicia Douvall gained infamy with her salacious kiss and tell stories concerning celebrities such as Simon Cowell and Chelsea footballer John Terry. And if that didn't make you shudder, she's also been romantically linked to Dean Gaffney, Mick Hucknell and Mickey Rourke.
In 2012, she claimed that she had a six-month affair with Cowell and...

We have our housemates! 14 stupid brave celebrities walked through the doors of the Celebrity Big Brother compound tonight to face a twisted fairytale like no other.
But who are these courageous souls who have shunned spa days and champers for a dirty bath and chickpeas? And do you know any of them? Well, we've got all the details of the gang, so read on for everything you need to know...
Alexander O'Neal
Age: 61
Give me the basics. Alexander is an American R&B singer probably best known for his hit 'Criticise', which reached number four in the UK charts in 1987.
Why is he going in the house? For one thing, he likes "challenges", apparently. Also, he loves us Brits: "Britain pretty much told the rest of the world who Alexander O'Neal was before anybody really knew." (He speaks about himself in the third person quite regularly, it seems.) Also: "It's a test for me,...

There can be a lot of ageism in football these days, with some players being immediately written off as soon as they hit the so-called very much not magical age of 30. Every little error they make is more scrutinized than when they were in their youth, and they often have to perform to perfection in order to gain as much acclaim as their younger teammates.
The truth is, some of the world’s greatest players currently are in the latter part of their careers, and it does seem as though some stars are hitting their prime later these days. Cristiano Ronaldo is just a few months short of his 30th birthday, for example, and he is as good as he’s ever been.
This list looks at the eight players who stand out among the older generation of superstars at the moment, remaining hugely influential to their...

The wealth of young talent available to Chelsea is deeper than at almost any other club in the world. Some have come through the ranks at the academy, others have been cherry-picked from across the globe by the club’s extensive scouting network. With Financial Fair Play an increasingly important factor in the club’s considerations, not to mention quotas for non-homegrown players in both the Premier League and Europe, it seems almost undeniable that Chelsea’s youth prospects will finally have an avenue to the first team. Will any of them achieve John Terry’s level of success, planting themselves firmly in the heart of Blues’ first team and staying there? We can but hope, so here is my selection of the ten players most likely to prove themselves worthy of making the biggest step up in football.

Social media has been gripped this past week by a so-called ‘ice bucket challenge’, whereby celebrities from varying professions have freezing cold ice water poured over them before nominating colleagues to do the same. The challenge has raised millions to fight Lou Gehrig’s disease, and has been particularly popular with footballers.
Earlier today Chelsea captain John Terry nominated former manager Rafael Benitez for the challenge, while forgotten Manchester United midfielder Anderson has pulled a similar stunt by selecting legendary retired boss Sir Alex Ferguson to have a bucket of the cold stuff tipped upside his head.
We’ve already seen countless of these videos on social media recently but this one, this one is slightly brilliant. Of course, all Als ice bucket challenges are worthy, but Anderson’s stands out from the crowd. First, keep a close eye on Shinji Kagawa’s reaction when he...

Few Chelsea fans had much nice to say about Rafael Benitez, who was appointed to manage the side on an interim basis following the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo in November 2012. Among the Spaniard’s many crimes were managing Liverpool and talking smack about Blues fans during his time there, but perhaps most egregious of all was his dropping of club captain John Terry during his seven months in charge at the Bridge.
Having since recovered his fitness and form, Terry has finally found a way of getting the perfect revenge on his former manager, now managing Napoli. Having been nominated by Stilyan Petrov and former teammate Ashley Cole, Terry accepted the Als Ice Bucket Challenge, in which celebrities empty a tub of ice water over their heads to raise awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, via the Als Association charity, before making three nominations of their own.

Stuttgart
Despite selling occasional defender David Luiz to Paris St Germain for about £30m too much, Chelsea have allowed another centre-back to leave the club – albeit temporarily – as Oriol Romeu has joined Stuttgart on loan for the season, fresh from signing a new contract at the London club.
Fans might be somewhat surprised that a defender given a new contract, and clearly identified as having a future at the club would be moved out on loan, especially with John Terry’s ageing legs and the pressure of four major competitions to compete in with just Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma as his potential partners – and presumably Branislav Ivanovic as long as Mourinho moves Cesar Azpilicueta back to right-back to accommodate Flilpe Luis. Even with those four options, having Romeu in there for the League Cup and earlier rounds of the Fa Cup might not have been such a bad idea.

Since Roman Abramovich took control of Chelsea back in 2004, his crusade to build a club capable of challenging for domestic and European honours has proven fruitful. Following hundreds of millions of pounds worth of investment, the arrivals of top class footballers and the appointments of some of the world’s greatest managers, the Blues are now well and truly one of the planet’s most powerful football clubs.
However, their transfer market strategy over the last decade has also seen them draft in younger players not quite ready for top level Premier League action, though glowing with promise at their time of arrival. Chelsea’s buying policy has been something that has revolutionised football – for better or for worse - with the Blues now stockpiling several of the world’s most talented young players.

Whether it’s due to their exorbitant spending or tendency to change managers more times than the average person changes their tee-shirt, Chelsea football club have been at the centre of a series of scandals and controversies over the last few years.
Following Roman Abramovich’s takeover of the club in 2003, and the investment of millions into infrastructure and players, the Blues have grown into one of Europe’s most recognised sides, and with that has come media publicity – though it hasn’t always been for the better.
Chelsea have been on the back pages of Sunday newspapers for all the wrong reasons at times, from John Terry’s affair with the girlfriend of England teammate Wayne Bridge through to Abramovich’s aforementioned ‘revolving door policy’ of managerial hirings and firings.
The Londoners seem to court controversy, with even Abramovich being accused of corruption recently, and if the...
