The latest release of Lon Chaney's most famous silent classic is a Blu-ray, which allows us to marvel at at the actor's artistry in a beautifully tinted HD image. Erik the Phantom is one of the two or three greatest fantasy makeup performances of all time. The release has three separate encodings, of different versions running at different film speeds. A 1929 recut has the best image, while the original 1925 version is uncut. Harold Lloyd gets kittenish in The Freshman.
Harold Lloyd’s (Safety Last!) biggest box-office hit was the 1925 silent comedy classic The Freshman, featuring the befuddled everyman at his eager best as a new college student.
Though he dreams of being a big man on campus, the freshman’s careful plans inevitably go hilariously awry, be it on the football field or at the Fall Frolic. But he gets a climactic chance to prove his mettle—and impress the sweet girl he loves—in one of the most famous sports sequences ever filmed.
The popular, crowd-pleasing movie directed by Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor is a gleeful showcase for Lloyd’s slapstick brilliance and incandescent charm, and it’s accompanied here by a new orchestral score by Carl Davis (Napoleon).

Apart from the three sneak screening titles that will stir up the buzz in the coming days, Julie Huntsinger and Tom Luddy’s 40th edition of the Telluride Film Festival excels in bringing a concentration of solid docus from the likes of Errol Morris and Werner Herzog who this year cuts the ribbon on a theatre going by his name and introduces Death Row, a pinch of Berlin Film Fest items (Gloria, Slow Food Story, Fifi Howls from Happiness) Palme d’Or winner (this year Abdellatif Kechiche will be celebrated), upcoming Sony Pictures Classics items (Tim’s Vermeer, The Lunchbox), Venice to Telluride to Tiff titles (Bethlehem, Tracks and Under the Skin), the latest Jason Reitman film (Labor Day) and the barely known docu-home-movie whodunit (by helmers Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine) The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden which features narration from the likes of Cate Blanchett, Diane Kruger and Connie Nielsen.

The Phantom Of The Opera was the first horror film I ever saw. It was at my grandparents’ house. I was about 3 or 4 and it was either on television or my grandfather had a VHS tape of it or something like that. I clearly remember the now famous shot of Mary Philbin pulling off the mask of Lon Chaney’s horrific Phantom as he played the organ. The look of sheer shock and fury etched on Chaney’s horribly disfigured face scared and delighted my admittedly warped young mind, as it must have very well done so for countless fans of the classic film.
I’m happy to say that that iconic scene, and many more, have never looked better than on Image Entertainment’s newly remastered high definition transfer of The Phantom Of The Opera, out November 1st on Blu-Ray. For classic horror fans who have had to make due with scratchy video recordings,...
