From teenage werewolves to...regular werewolves, here are some prime Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes for Halloween.
It’s October and outside of checking out RiffTrax’s offerings, you’ll have to go back to the previous ten seasons to dive deep into a man and his robots making fun of B-movie horrors. So if you’re in the mood for the Satellite of Love this Halloween season, here are some of the best horror movie episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 to watch.
Just as a warning, the list does skew a little bit more to the Sci-Fi Channel era, but that's to be expected considering the library they had to play with.

In a time when reboots and relaunches are all over the place, but the one I’m really pumped for is the twelfth season of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Already, the Netflix-exclusive season has finished production and will be hitting streaming this Thanksgiving.

The MST3K Kickstarter campaign is up, running, and funding episodes. If you're new to MST3K, here's a suggestion for getting started...
Turn down your lights (where applicable) - Mystery Science Theater 3000 is making a comeback. The Us series poking fun at bad movies from the comfort of a satellite several miles above the Earth ran for eleven years from 1988-1999, and creator Joel Hodgson has been raising funds to resume the experiment via Kickstarter. The new episodes will star The Nerdist’s Jonah Ray as the hapless human, with the internet’s Felicia Day down to play the evil scientist torturing Jonah with cheesy B-movies, with Patton Oswalt performing henchman duties.
As we write this, three new episodes have been funded, and a batch of six looks likely. However, Hodgson is hoping to reach $5.5 million and fund a full series of 12 new episodes, so if you...

I Am Thor
Directed by Ryan Wise
USA, 2015
I Am Thor is one of those fascinating documentaries that makes you want to laugh and cry at the same time. The jovial star of the show, aging rocker Jon Mikl Thor, is a gentle soul who bears all (literally) for director Ryan Wise. On the other hand, it’s always sad when someone doesn’t realize they’ve crashed into their talent ceiling. But who are we to judge? Thor’s dogged determination is an inspiration to anyone with a dream, and he’s one of the most engaging personalities we’ve seen all year.
There is a moment late in I Am Thor when Jon Mikl Thor admits he will someday have to “stop coming back and say, ‘Hey, I’m here!’” That this realization arrives 10 years into said comeback is just one small part of what makes Thor so endearing.

This must be the year of music documentaries.
Following Montage of Heck on Kurt Cobain and Amy on Amy Winehouse comes Thor, the story of Jon Mikl Thor, who became a rock icon. The film, I Am Thor, follows him as he decides to come back to rock after years away.
According to the synopsis, “Jon Mikl Thor was a young man from Vancouver who did not let anyone get in the way of his dreams. He wanted to become a bodybuilder, and in the early ’70s he won both Mr. Canada and Mr. USA titles, along with 40 titles around the world. He followed his dream of rock stardom and formed his own band, Thor, which would go on to record over a dozen albums.”

I Am Thor
Directed by Ryan Wise
2015, USA / Canada /Finland / Sweden
Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are often associated with masculinity, aggression, and machismo but even by Heavy metal standards, the artist known as Thor (a.k.a. Jon Miki Thor) is an absolute beast!
The Norse god impersonator, semi-professional bodybuilder, performance artist, b-movie actor, and all-around nice guy is the subject of I Am Thor, an 84 minute documentary by director Ryan Wise which shines some insight into Thor’s wild life and documents his long-running come back. With a music career spanning five decades, Thor is one of the legends of rock-n-roll that not enough people know exists —and hopefully this film will change that. 15 years in the making and I Am Thor is finally here, and totally worth the wait.
I’ve seen some remarkable screenings over my 19 years of attending the Fantasia Film Festival. I’ll never forget the enthusiastic,...

Mpi Media Group has acquired all distribution rights to I Am Thor. It’s not about the hammer-swinging superhero, but rather a biographical film about Jon Mikl Thor, an unsung hero of the golden age of heavy metal, and his attempt at a comeback. The film, directed by Ryan Wise (Prom Queen), will receive a late fall theatrical release. Mpi Media Group Executive Vice President Greg Newman made the deal with Glen Reynolds, the President and CEO of Circus Road Films. Thor was…...

He was a bodybuilder, a naked waiter, and a Las Vegas showman before he became a rock star. Above all else, though, Jon Mikl Thor has always been a modest, 'never say die' entertainer, as made apparent in I Am Thor, a very funny and enlightening documentary by Ryan Wise. Born in 1953, Thor (apparently his true family name) appears to have been an affable kid who got accustomed to being bullied as a youngster. That didn't discourage him from forming his own band, though it may have contributed to his decision to become a bodybuilder. He drifted from job to job, but unlike most young people, his gigs were rather more memorable and unique, such as a stint as a naked waiter -- cut...

The first scene plays out like an anti-thesis to the satanic and heavy metal antics that the film devotes itself too. The setup is quaint. A young father happily shaves his face. A young mother is cooking breakfast, and their son yells that he can’t wait to scramble eggs with her! All of the sudden demons pop out of the oven and kill the mom and dad. Thus begins Rock ‘n’ Roll Nightmare – also known as The Edge of Hell in certain parts of the world – perhaps the most definitive entry into “Metalsploitation”.
What is “Metalsploitation”? One of my friends brought the term to my attention, and I’m not sure if that subgenre classification already exists, so if not congratulations to him for inventing it. Metalsploitation exists in this bizarre era of cinema where horror films and heavy metal artists and music met. It produced cult classics like this,...

While the Sundance Film Festival is the better known film festival located in Utah that runs in January, it is not the only one, as the Slamdance Film Festival has been running in the same place during the same month for over 20 years. The unique aspect of the Slamdance Film Festival, however, is its Narrative Features and Documentary Features program, which restricts its selection to films that are directorial debuts, made for under $1 million, and don’t have Us distribution. The 2015 incarnation of the festival is set to run from January 23rd to the 29th, and ahead of the festival’s premiere next month, organisers have unveiled the lineup for the aforementioned categories. The lineup is as follows.
Narrative Features Program:

Festival top brass announced the 19 films that will screen at the Slamdance Film Festival, set to run in Park City, Utah, from January 23-29.
The 11 narrative and eight documentary selections include 13 world premieres. All competition films are feature directorial debuts budgeted below $1m without Us distribution.
“It’s very exciting to bring this dynamic lineup to audiences in Park City,” said festival director Anna Germanidi. “We are proud to help launch these filmmakers’ careers and celebrate the success we all believe these films deserve.”
“Our success in showcasing emerging artists is most obviously linked with American talent, but increasingly at Slamdance, we want to also support new international talent,” said co-founder and president Peter Baxter.

The Sundance Film Festival dominates Park City in late January, but there is also the upstart Slamdance Film Festival. We’ve not really highlighted that fest or its program, but I always stay at Treasure Mountain Inn where Slamdance is headquartered and they’ve kind of grown on me. Last year they brought Christopher Nolan to speak (the fest had the good sense to program his first film) and Joe Mangianello came to vamp his male stripper docu. This year, there’s every chance of seeing Dennis Rodman, the flamboyant former rebounding machine and Bff of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, for the docu Dennis Rodman’s Big Bang In Pyongyang. So let’s all root for an international incident! Here are the films they’ll be playing from January 23-29:

Rock and Roll Nightmare aka Edge of Hell (1987)
Directed by: John Fasano
Written by: Jon Mikl Thor
Cast: Jon Mikl Thor (John Triton), Jillian Peri (Lou Anne), Frank Dietz (Roger), David Lane (Max), Teresa Simpson (Randy)
Gateway films can take a horror aficionado down roads to a destination that resurrects memories of humble beginnings as a young horror fan. I found “Trick or Treat” on YouTube in its entirety a few weeks back, and nostalgia overpowered me to the point that I had to go down the rabbit hole of horror and hair metal to see how far it goes. “Trick of Treat” seems to be the one that everyone remembers, mainly because of Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne making brief cameos, and Skippy from “Family Ties” sporting long hair, and dropping the “F” word from time to time. Stuff like that is downright unforgettable.

It was the 80s. Clothes were tighter, hair was bigger, and the most important things in life were to kick-ass and just f’n rock, man. The heavy metal way of life leaked into our horror films as well. Trick or Treat, Shock ‘ em Dead, The Gate, and Lone Wolf are prime examples of this strange marriage of metal and monsters. But one of the finest (and cheesiest) films of this lot is Rock’n’Roll Nightmare aka Edge of Hell. So grab your lycra tube top and hairspray. We are taking a trip to the great white north for the ultimate in horror metal.

In the 80s, rock music and horror movies went together like acid washed jeans and feathered hair. The trouble is, even though many horror movies had awesome rock soundtracks, the movies that specifically featured rock musician characters as heroes or villains varied wildly in quality. Although the rock horror movie has mostly gone the way of the 80s, I’m not sure any other type of music will ever have such a successful love affair with horror. I can’t picture people turning up for a movie called Pop Divas of the Apocalypse, or Death by Dubstep, or even Bloody Pit of Techno Bastards. But what do I know? I’m still stuck in the 80s. Here are 10 of the movies that are stuck with me.

At long last! Jon Mikl Thor makes his first - and certainly not last - appearance in the B-Sides. If you’ve ever seen Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare, then you know what is coming. Prepare to have your ears blasted and your mind blown. Do you accept the challenge?
The members of Eighties rock band “The Tritonz” head out to a small house in the middle of nowhere to work on their new album and enjoy as much nookie as possible - but demons from the depths of hell have been unleashed. Bodies are possessed. Rubber puppet monsters attack. To save the world from the forces of evil, lead singer Triton experiences the power of Greyskull and is reborn as The Intercessor: a caped, leather bikini-wearing glam rock He-Man with a head of hair that can only be described as the be all, end all of 1980 hair metal fros.

Well, this looks quite shaky and is actually something of a serious disappointment coming from long-time acting fave Vincent D'Onofrio. The trailer for his directorial effort Don't Go in the Woods sketches out a story in a which a sensitive rock band retreats to a remote setting to write material for a new record, only to encounter some sort of horror. Call it The Blair Witch Project with acoustic guitars, perhaps. Evidently D'Onofrio took a bunch of unknowns and semi-unknowns into nowhere to shoot this film, and I wish I could say that the result looks good. It doesn't, at all, but hit the break for a bonus clip from another film that is truly awful, but in a much more entertaining way. Don't Go in the Woods is sound advice, especially when there's a killer on the loose. First-time director Vincent D'Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, "Law & Order: Criminal Intent") explores love,...

[Editor's note: In light of the release of Jason Eisner's Hobo with a Shotgun, we thought we'd ask the world's leading expert on Canadian exploitation cinema and Managing Editor of Canuxploitation, Paul Corupe, to share his five favourite and most outrageous Canadian expoitation films]
The Canadian film industry has a dirty little secret. For every critically lauded drama by celebrated auteurs, dozens of unacknowledged low-budget horror, science fiction, sexploitation, action and lowbrow comedy films lurk just below the surface. Although many of these “Canuxploitation” films appeared during the 1970s and '80s, when generous tax laws helped nurture the budding careers of directors like David Cronenberg, Bob Clark and Ivan Reitman, Canada's rich history of exploitation films stretches from almost the very beginning of moving pictures.
Our most recent entry, Jason Eisner's Hobo with a Shotgun, has been earning positive reviews due to its gleeful devotion to exploitation carnage, it's only the tip of the ice floe when it comes to the dark side of Canada's film industry. In more than a decade of hunting down obscure Canadian B-movies, the five films below are some of the wildest examples of Canuxploitation, a legacy created...

This week sees a ton of genre movies coming out on DVD and Blu- Ray. The biggest being Predators, followed up by the remake of the cult classic Night of the Demons, a sequel to Mirrors, and Anniversary editions for Rocky Horror Picture Show and Psycho. Add to that a slew of indie and classic horror and there is a lot to choose from.
Predators
Directed by Nimród Antal
Robert Rodriguez presents Predators, a bold new chapter in the Predator universe. Adrien Brody stars as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors mysteriously brought together on a jungle planet. But when these cold-blooded human “predators” find themselves in all-out war against a new breed of alien Predators, it’s the ultimate showdown between hunter and prey. Predators also star Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Oleg Taktarov, and Louis Ozawa Changchien.

The number of home video releases on October 19th is not as abundant as in recent weeks, and fewer re-released titles means those that are available are much more special. In this batch one Adrien Brody flick competes with another, and at least two independent horror titles are making a splash. Two beloved classic films return in Blu-ray where one is supplemented by a documentary treatment of it.
Also, don't forget to strum & drum out with some tunes from Rob Zombie on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Finally, foreign horror gives us an over-the-top Japanese gorefest, a British zombie flick where the $70 budget was spent on tea and biscuits for the zombies, and Norwegian black metal.

Often overlooked by horror fans Mystery Science Theatre 3000 was an excellent source for forgotten and obscure horror fans. With the release MST3K Xv horror fans are treated to two gems of horror/ sci-fi magic.
For those of you who may have blocked out the early 90’s, MST3K was a show with a premise so simple many of us kicked ourselves for not thinking of it first. Joel Robinson (Joel Hodgson) is a man stranded on a satellite in space with two robots, Crow T. Robot (Trace Beaulieu) and Tom Servo (Kevin Murphy) whose only task is to watch and berate the worst movies ever made. The show began its humble days on Ktma-tv in Hopkins, Minnesota but was quickly picked up by a fledgling Comedy Central, where it ran for 7 season then finally ended its days on the Sci-Fi Channel giving us a total of eleven incredible seasons. Part...

This week, I decided to go back and check out a classic from the crypt that I missed, and thanks to Synapse Films, many of these previously lost 80’s classic are now available in wonderful quality. So let’s go back to a simpler time a time of acid wash, feathered hair, tight leather pants and heavy eye makeup - and the women didn’t look that good either. The year was 1987 and on a small Canadian farm a group of kids got together to film a $100,000 classic titled Rock N’ Roll Nightmare.
Known also as The Edge Of Hell, which incidentally the opening title sequence lists it as, Rock N’ Roll Nightmare is a heavy metal war between Heaven and Hell. Set on a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere, which happens to be next to a busy highway as all exterior shots show several headlights passing within close proximity,...

I'm not sure how the heavy metal and horror movie connection started but it's a match made in hell. The two go together like chocolate and peanut butter. It's a natural pairing. Alice Cooper had been combining Grand Guignol stage theatrics with live music since the 70's. Blue Oyster Cult wound horror and science fictions themes into their lyrics. Black Sabbath took their name from a Mario Bava movie yet the movies and the music maintained a safe distance from one another until heavy metal became the undisputed king of album sales in the mid to late 80's. The two seemed to officially become bed mates in 1986 with Friday the 13th Part 6 when the very same and this time very crazy Alice Cooper provided the synth happy track "He's back! (The Man Behind The Mask)" to the soundtrack. Before you knew it, Dokken was writing the theme song to my...
