Though they’ve yet to officially explode, filmmaking brothers John and Drew Dowdle are certainly ones to watch. The Minnesota-born siblings’ first feature was The Poughkeepsie Tapes, a “found footage” shocker that squeezed a good deal of creeps out of its murderer’s-home-video conceit; horror fans with Dick Tracy skills can track the film down on the Internet, but otherwise it has been stuck in MGM limbo for a couple of years now. The Dowdles had better luck under the rule of Screen Gems with 2008’s Quarantine, a better-than-expected remake of the beloved Spanish cinema verite monster [Rec], which pulled in over $30 million at the box office, not bad for a production that cost $12 mil. Currently, they’re finishing up the M. Night Shyamalan-produced Devil, for Universal, a thriller with a very intriguing premise: a group of people are trapped in an elevator, and one of them just might be Lucifer himself.

It's a bit strange to think that anyone could break into the film industry with a flick that was good enough to start their career, but not good enough to climb out of limbo after two years. Such is the case with John & Drew Dowdle who broke into the industry writing and producing The Poughkeepsie Tapes, a film that is stuck in release limbo despite having trailers in theaters on and off. Though the film hasn't seen release, the writers are finishing their second directing gig with Devil written by M. Night Shyamalan, and now Bloody Disgusting says the brothers will direct Afraid, an adaptation of Jack Kilborn's novel of the same name. In the novel, a helicopter crash unleashes a rogue Red-Ops unit on Safe Haven, Wisconsin, and its residents must band together to defend themselves against these brutal "trans-human" killers. Co-written by Larry Malkin & Chad Thumann, the ...

Intense. Gruesome. Relentless. Masterpiece. These are just some of the words critics have used to describe Jack Kilborn's novel Afraid. And today we learned that John Erick and Drew Dowdle, who are wrapping up post-production on their latest film, Devil, for Universal, have been tapped to direct an adaptation of the popular thriller.
Bloody Disgusting got the early word on the brothers being attached to helm Afraid and provided the following brief synopsis:
After a helicopter crash unleashes a rogue Red-Ops unit on Safe Haven, Wisconsin, its residents must band together to defend themselves against these brutal “trans-human” killers.
Vincent Newman and Josh Kesselman are producing, and the script was written by Laurence Malkin and Chad Thumann. The hope is that Afraid will turn into a franchise in the vein of Terminator and Alien.
