Gwar are down one intergalactic barbarian, as lead guitarist Brent Purgason — better known as Pustulus Maximus — has left the band.
Purgason had been a member of Gwar since 2012, taking over the role left vacant by Cory Smoot (aka Flattus Maximus), who died in 2011. He played on the albums Battle Maximus, The Blood of Gods, and The New Dark Ages.
In an Instagram post, the guitarist didn’t give a specific reason for his exit, but did say that “people grow and priorities change.” His full statement reads as follows:
“11 years ago I had the privilege of joining the greatest shock rock and roll band in the world. Today, I announce my departure from it.
Playing and performing as Pustulus Maximus has been quite the experience and I’ll be forever grateful for it. I want to extend my utmost appreciation for all the support given to me by the fans over the years.

Gwar have just released a 10th anniversary expanded edition of their 2013 album Battle Maximus, with the crown jewel being the track “Tammy, The Swine Queen.” The previously unreleased song features the final recording from the band’s late vocalist Oderus Urungus.
Battle Maximus was the last Gwar album to feature Oderus (aka Dave Brockie), who died in March 2014, six months after the LP’s release.
Regarding the album reissue and the song “Tammy, The Swine Queen,” Gwar’s current singer Blothar the Berseker commented, “Musically, Battle Maximus is a great debut work by [lead guitarist] Pustulus Maximus, and lyrically, it is the final word of lead singer and band founder Oderus Urungus, The record is run through with the desperate, dangerous, and fully bananas imagination of Oderus.”
He continued, “In fact, this re-release includes a song so nutty we named it twice, and then promptly forgot to put it on the record the first time around.

Gwar are revisiting their 2013 album Battle Maximus with a new 10th anniversary expanded reissue. A remixed and remastered version of the track “Falling” can be heard now ahead of the reissue’s September 1st release date.
Battle Maximus stands as the final Gwar album to feature late band mastermind Dave Brockie, aka Oderus Urungus, and the 10th anniversary edition features his final vocal performance on the previously unreleased bonus track “Tammy, the Swine King.”
“Ten years after its initial release, the wounds are just as fresh,” commented guitarist BälSäc, the Jaws ‘o Death. “The words that Oderus wrote as a tribute to his fallen Scumdog brother, Flattus Maximus, gain new meaning when heard as the final lyrics he would ever sing. The songs echo in stereo through the twin holes that were left in our hearts by the absence of Oderus and Flattus. This new remix of Battle Maximus breathes...

It’s increasingly rare to be surprised by a new movie’s existence entirely, particularly when it’s connected to an established IP. Studios inundate audiences with advertising in an effort to remain at the forefront of their minds while fervent fans dig up every crumb of information from the second a project is announced, leaving precious little to the imagination by the time a film hits the screen.
Blair Witch‘s covert reveal, The Cloverfield Paradox‘s unannounced release, and Split‘s connection to Unbreakable are recent examples that, regardless of the reception to the films themselves, generated buzz thanks to the element of surprise. Five years ago, writer-director Adam Green pulled off a similar achievement with Victor Crowley, the fourth installment in his Hatchet franchise.

Shudder’s new documentary This Is Gwar, directed by Scott Barber, charts the history and progress of one of the most insidious threats the planet Earth has ever encountered: An art collective who answer only to themselves and, possibly, their legion of fans.
Gwar is best known as an iconic heavy metal monster band with gory stage shows, blistering lyrical assaults, and costumes which land bandmembers in court on indecency charges. Gwar have been teetering on the edge of commercial success for over 30 years. It is also a special effects lab, a live musical theater troupe, and an independent filmmaking studio, all under a creative conglomeration called The Slave Pit Inc.
This is Gwar includes current and archival interviews with the musicians and the creative team, as well as artists who appreciate the work, like Weird Al Yankovic, who gave his own face to the band when their frontman tried...

Ahead of Horror Channel’s UK TV premiere of Adam Green’s Victor Crowley, the great director shares his personal tragedies, George Romero’s inspirational words, the importance of genre comedy and hints that the Bayou Butcher may rise again…
Adam, you’re back on the UK’s Horror Channel this Friday night with your latest ‘Hatchet’ instalment Victor Crowley. Excited?
I’m always thrilled to hear that another one of my films will be playing on the UK’s Horror Channel! It’s crazy to think that the Us hasn’t had a horror specific television channel in 6 years now, only horror themed subscription platforms like Shudder. Then again- look at the real life horror we’re dealing with here as far as our current President goes. Clearly our country has made far worse decisions than doing away with our horror television network.
You’ve called Victor Crowley your most personal movie ever.

Since bursting on the scene with the throwback slasher Hatchet in 2006, writer/director Adam Green has built a career on doing this his own way. He has written and directed multiple features, produced films for up-and-coming filmmakers, created, written and starred on two seasons of his own sitcom Holliston, co-hosted The Movie Crypt, his own successful weekly filmmaking podcast and much, much more.
Digging Up the Marrow, Green's latest feature, is something totally different: a blend of documentary and narrative that defies any easy categorization. In the film, Green plays himself, a horror movie director with his own independent production company (ArieScope) who is contacted by a man named Decker (Ray Wise, the best he's ever been) claiming that monsters are real and that he knows exactly where to find them -- at an entrance to an underground world he calls "the Marrow."

Gwar has been hypnotizing their fans around the world with their costumes, story lines and most importantly their music for decades. The band has been able to successfully sustain their popularity, a fantastic feat for any musicians out there. Earlier this year they took a major hit when their fearless leader Oderus Urungus (David Murray Brockie) passed away, leaving a huge vacant spot in the lead singer department. It hit Gwar fans really hard, but rather than fade into obscurity, the band continued on. They quickly filled the void with not just one, but two new Scumdog singers – Blothar (Mike Bishop) and Vulvatron (Kim Dylla). In the blink of [ Read More ]

After frontman and founder Oderus Urungus (aka Dave Brockie) of Gwar died earlier this year, many wondered what the future of the gross-out metal band would be. The band has always had a rotating door, but there would need to be a gap filled for another vocalist. Well, we have at least a partial answer. Gwar got a lady singer. And her name is Vulvatron. According to a profile from Wondering Sound, she made her debut during Riot Fest in Chicago over the weekend, and she is a sight to see. I feel, in this case, we have all won, and for several reasons: 1. Her "massive (prosthetic) breasts occasionally shoot geysers of blood," making her "a monster instead of a princess." 2. She's purple! Cool! 3. She is not the first female member of Gwar, but is the group's first major player, co-leading on vocals with Blothar (aka Mike Bishop, aka Beefcake...

Dave Brockie has been memorialized again - only this time in a manner that would've made his monstrous alter-ego Oderus Urungus chortle with glee. The late Gwar frontman was given a Viking funeral at the annual Gwar-b-q in Richmond, Va on Friday, in a ritual that saw his Oderus costume being laid on a ship and set ablaze in accordance with Norse tradition. The singer, who died of a heroin overdose in March at the age of 50, was eulogized at the event by friend and Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe, who stated: “Dave is the only motherfucker I know who has to get put away twice. He’s too big for one fucking funeral.” Blythe later posted an image of the burning ship to Instagram along with the message: "Tonight we sent Oderus home in a fitting manner at the public memorial for Dave Brockie. Even sadder news for Gwar fans. Dave Brockie, the late frontman for the Virginia-born metal band, died of an accidental heroin overdose, the state office of the chief medical examiner confirmed to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. That's right! Although still mourning the passing of their leader, Dave Brockie (the incomparable Oderus Urungus), the unstoppable force that is Gwar is finding a new way to spread their unique brand of mayhem on the masses. We give you the GWARbar.
Planned for a swanky location in Richmond, Va, the historic Jackson Ward, the GWARbar will be the restaurant equivalent to what the band has been to music for the past 30 years… an off-kilter, but always entertaining new take on things. A more twisted place to eat and drink.

"It's my best work to date, and I think a lot of the people involved in the show would say the same thing. If you like Season 1, I think Season 2 really blows it away. I don’t have the world’s greatest relationship with Holliston. I remember reading about it, prior to the airing of season one, and being excited. Then I remember the disappointment I experienced when finally having the ability to watch it, seeing as Fearnet has a pretty limited reach, as far as availability goes. All of the elements were there, but it just didn’t click with me. One of the main problems I had, was that for the type of show that it was, it was way too long. Shows that feature the sitcom format should never go on for any longer than thirty minutes. By the forty minute mark, the novelty has worn off, and some viewers are beyond ready for the episode to end. That’s not to say that there wasn’t some entertaining moments, it’s just that whatever momentum it created, was ruined by the excessively long running time.

In addition to being Oderus Urungus, the frontman for the groundbreaking metal band Gwar for over three decades, Dave Brockie (as Oderus) starred in Adam Green's sitcom "Holliston." Green had some words about his co-star and friend he wanted to share.
If you are a fan of Brockie's work in Gwar or "Holliston" or his outrageous interviews, do yourself a favor and read Adam Green's blog entry on his friend Dave Brockie. It's a truly heartfelt and touching tribute.
Green wrote this entry because, as he put it, "I want to tell as many people as possible who the great man behind that costume really was."

Details of that ceremony have not been disclosed as of this writing. “On behalf of Dave Brockie's family, Slave Pit Inc. and Gwar, we would like to thank all the loyal fans worldwide for the outpouring of love and support shown to us over the past few days,...

All of us at Fearnet were deeply saddened when we learned of Dave Brockie's passing yesterday. The founder of horror band Gwar, Brockie was probably best known by his alter ego, Oderus Urungus. Oderus was an integral part of Fearnet's original series, Holliston.
In honor of Dave / Oderus, Fearnet will be airing a 24-hour Holliston marathon, beginning at 6am on Wednesday March 26th. You can find Fearnet on your cable network here.

The world lost an amazing person today. Some truly shocking and tragic news is coming out of Virginia as Gwar frontman Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus) has passed on at the all too early age of just 50 years old.
According to MSN, officers were called to Brockie's home Sunday evening (March 23rd) and found the singer dead inside, Richmond police spokeswoman Dionne Waugh said Monday. Detectives don't suspect foul play at this time, and the medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death, Waugh said.
The band, founded in 1984, is best known for its members' high-profile costumes and stage theatrics, but beneath it all they had a strong message and were anything but shy in terms of getting it out there and shouting it from the hilltops. Brockie was also a staple of the Adam Green and Joe Lynch show for FEARnet, "Holliston," in which Brockie as Oderus played Adam's friend and confidante.

Richmond, Va. (AP) — Dave Brockie, who as "Oderus Urungus" fronted the alien-costumed heavy metal band Gwar during graphic and fake-blood-soaked stage shows for more than three decades, has died. He was 50. Officers were called to Brockie's home Sunday evening and found the singer dead inside the home, Richmond police spokeswoman Dionne Waugh said Monday.
