- John Veale was born on June 15, 1922 in Shortlands, Kent, England, UK. He was a composer, known for The Purple Plain (1954), Freedom to Die (1961) and No Road Back (1957). He was married to Diana Taylor. He died on November 16, 2006.

- Served in The Education Corps, World War II. Studied music with Egon Wellesz and Roy Harris. Began serious composition, 1946. His incidental music for the Oxford University Dramatic Society's productions in 1947 led to Muir Mathieson commissioning documentary scores from Veale for the Crown Film Unit. After film work dried up, Veale worked as film critic for the Oxford Mail, England (1965-1980) and as copy editor, Oxford University Press (1968-1987).
