Steven Moffat began working on his new limited series “Douglas Is Cancelled” in 2018, before most people — Moffat included — had even heard of the term “cancel culture.”
It was only later he realized his story — about a distinguished news anchor whose life is turned upside down when an unguarded comment goes viral — exemplified it.
“At the time I wrote this, I wouldn’t have known the expression,” the screenwriter, best known for his work on fan favorites “Sherlock” and “Doctor Who,” tells Variety. “Obviously, [once I did] I co-opted it straight into the title.”
The show follows the misadventures of Douglas Bellowes, played by Hugh Bonneville of “Paddington” and “Downton Abbey” fame. After a rare verbal misstep at a wedding spirals out of control, he finds himself scrambling to salvage both his personal and professional lives. Karen Gillan (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) also stars as Douglas’ ambitious and internet-savvy co-host Madeline.

Steven Moffat has penned Douglas Is Cancelled, his first comedy series in two decades. More details within:

Exclusive: In a competitive situation, Sherlock producer Hartswood Films has won the rights to adapt Cold War magic thriller The Warlock Effect into a TV series.
The debut novel, about a magician who flees Nazi Germany and is lured into espionage, was written by Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman, creators of the Ghost Stories theatre production.
Hartswood optioned The Warlock Effect from publisher Hodder & Stoughton, fending off rival bids from seven other production companies.
The book, released on Thursday, centers on Ludvik Weinschenk, a boy who escapes tyranny in Germany to become the most famous magician in 1950s Britain under the stage name Louis Warlock.
His talent for deception attracts the attention of the British secret service and he is thrown into the world of espionage on a mission across Europe.

Steven Moffat has said “we’ve just started talking about” a second season of acclaimed BBC/Netflix drama Inside Man and reiterated that he would “start writing Sherlock tomorrow” if stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman agreed to return.
While promoting his debut West End play The Unfriend on this morning’s BBC Today program, the Sherlock creator and former Doctor Who showrunner said “we’re looking at the enthusiastically-nodded-about graphs and apparently [Inside Man] performed quite well.”
The Stanley Tucci and David Tennant-starrer, which has been available on Netflix in the U.S. since Halloween, was well received critically. While its overnight audience was low, episodes of the show in which Tucci plays a convicted killer solving crimes from an American jail consolidated on 28-day catch-up above the 5M mark.
Moffat said this is reflective of the changing nature of TV ratings.

The first season of the “spectacularly dark” thriller series The Devil’s Hour (watch it Here) launched exclusively on Amazon’s Prime Video on October 28th – and the show has been so successful during its first month of release, Amazon has announced that they’ve ordered two more seasons! The Devil’s Hour season 2 will begin filming sometime in early 2023.
Amazon’s Dan Grabiner had this to say about the renewal: “We’re thrilled with the audience response to The Devil’s Hour, and can’t wait to share the next chapter of this mind-bending story. Fans can look forward to plenty more twists and turns in this remarkable tale from first-time series creator Tom Moran, and welcoming back our immensely talented cast, led by Jessica Raine and Peter Capaldi.“

Inside Man is a good pun and a bad story. The four-part black comedy drama is about Jefferson Grieff (Stanley Tucci), a criminologist on death row in Texas who, for reasons unexplained, is allowed to run a rudimentary detective agency while awaiting execution. That makes Grieff an inside man both in the prison sense, and in the criminal-solving-crimes sense. See? Good pun, and a decent premise for say, a CBS procedural in the NCIS/Ghost Whisperer pattern: a case a week to be solved by Tucci’s charismatic lead before his very literal deadline.
Cut-and-shut welded to a different story set in the UK about an Anglican vicar (David Tennant) making decisions so needlessly stupid that you wonder he has the capacity to put his cassock on the right way round, that premise (and pun) unfortunately collapse. Even Inside Man’s strong cast, pacy directing from Sherlock’s Paul McGuigan...

For most of the six episode run time of The Devil’s Hour, created by Tom Moran and co-exec produced by Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue, it is not entirely clear what the hell is even going on. Lucy (Jessica Raine) is having nightmares about things that never happened and visions of tragedies yet to occur. Her son Isaac is a strange little boy who repeats back things said to him, has multiple imaginary friends and displays no emotion ever – he’s not autistic, he’s not schizophrenic and the latest in the line of doctors working with Lucy and Isaac (played by Meera Syal) doesn’t know what’s wrong with him either.
Meanwhile, somewhere, sometime, Lucy is in a room with strange old man Gideon (Peter Capaldi). She has bruises all over her face, and he is handcuffed to the table. “What’s the worst thing that you have ever experienced?...

Are you ready for "a big ball of wibbly wobbly, time wimey stuff" that has very little to do with "Doctor Who," other than the fact that it happens to star Peter Capaldi, the Twelfth Doctor? If so, look no further than "The Devil's Hour," which perp-walks Capaldi in a red prison jumpsuit for all the world — or at least Prime Video viewers — to see. You don't have to be a subscriber to Prime Video to watch the trailer for "The Devil's Hour," but that's where this new six-episode series will be streaming.
"The Devil's Hour" sees Capaldi sitting across an interrogation room table from Jessica Raine, who plays a woman named Lucy Chambers, with a link to one of several victims that Capaldi's character, Gideon, is suspected of killing. The series is created by Tom Moran, but there's one other "Doctor Who" connection with it in that Steven Moffat...

HBO delivers a new incarnation of “The Time Traveler’s Wife” on Sunday night, a theme for a show which delivered a specific set of production challenges that took some clever planning to traverse.
In the latest version of the story, based on the 2003 book by Audrey Niffenegger, Theo James (“Divergent”) plays time traveler Henry, and “Game of Thrones” alum Rose Leslie stars as his wife, Claire.
Henry jumps through time multiple times in every episode — and with different aged Henrys crossing paths with different aged Claires, as well as her housemates Gomez (Desmin Borges) and Charisse (Natasha Lopez), who become their best friends, it made for an unusual filming experience and one that took some getting used to for the actors.
“It was definitely tricky,” James told TheWrap, noting that “some days, you would be shooting – it didn’t happen a lot — but some days you will be shooting Claire...

HBO has unveiled the first full trailer for “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” a new romantic drama series set to premiere May 15.
Based on the 2003 best-selling novel of the same name by Audrey Niffenegger, “The Time Traveler’s Wife” stars Rose Leslie as Clare Abshire, an ordinary woman in a relationship with Henry DeTamble (Theo James). “We’re not messing around with the stuff that really matters,” Steven Moffat, executive producer of HBO’s upcoming series adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger’s book The Time Traveler’s Wife, declared.
Moffat was talking up the series, which is set to premiere later this spring, during HBO’s virtual TCA press day Tuesday, and comes as the network unveiled the first look at the show.
The Time Traveler’s Wife stars Rose Leslie as Clare Abshire, Theo James as Henry DeTamble, Desmin Borges as Gomez, and Natasha Lopez as Charisse. The six-part series is an intricate and magical love story and tells the tale of Clare and Henry, and a marriage with a problem… time travel.
“What is thrilling of the interaction of time travel and a love story here, is it makes the most common phenomenon of a completely happy marriage, interesting again. Love stories, or love movies, tend to end at the alter.

Banská Štiavnica is one of the finalists of the Eufcn Location Award, the annual prize for European film locations organised by the European Film Commissions Network (Eufcn) in collaboration with Cineuropa. The location was submitted by the Slovak Film Commission. In this article, producer Sue Vertue and location manager Patrick Horvath share the experience of filming in the picturesque Slovak town of Banská Štiavnica, the setting for the BBC/Netflix miniseries Dracula. When Sherlock debuted a decade ago on the BBC, it was unlike anything else on television. For one, the format was a bit odd: one season of three 90-minute episodes. For another, it didn’t look like anything else on TV: Text messages that appear as part of the mise-en-scène. Edits and scene transitions that move us elegantly and efficiently through space and time. All part of a visual language that brings us into the mind of one of the cleverest characters in all of pop culture as he does what he does best: solves mysteries.
While TV is famously more of a writer’s than a director’s medium, the filmmaker behind the camera for a series pilot has an immense impact on the tone of the show. They are the creator who crafts the visual language for the series, the one whose style all subsequent series directors will...

This past Sunday marked the 10th anniversary of BBC’s Sherlock. To celebrate the occasion, creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and producer Sue Vertue took part in a virtual Q&a, hosted by Louis Moffat, and answered questions posed by fans. One of the most interesting segments of the 25-minute video came when they were asked about the possibility of a female Sherlock Holmes and who could play them.
Moffat initially suggested former collaborator Michelle Gomez as a potentially good choice. The Scottish actress is most known for playing Missy on Doctor Who and Madam Satan on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Gatiss then put forward Phoebe Waller-Bridge of Fleabag and Solo: A Star Wars Story fame, while Moffat came up with a second choice in The Crown’s Olivia Colman. Vertue, meanwhile, suggested Killing Eve icon Jodie Comer.
Moffat then reflected that there’s no great challenge in swapping...

Saturday the 25th of July 2020 marked a decade since the world was first introduced to Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Holmes and Watson in BBC One’s Sherlock. To mark the anniversary, creators Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue took part in a Q&a session answering fan questions read out by Moffat and Vertue’s son (and young Sherlock) Louis Moffat.
You can see the full 25-minute Q&a session courtesy of Sherlockology. It’s a warm, nostalgic chat, peppered by jokes, filming memories and affectionate ribbing of their host.
Questions ranged from the creators’ favourite Holmes and Watson other than their own, most challenging scenes to film (the gushing cold Reichenbach Falls in ‘The Abominable Bride’), what Irene Adler is doing now (‘something naughty’), and how Sherlock Holmes would react to lockdown (‘Sherlock would quarantine himself for three months without knowing that he had!’ says Moffat.

Netflix has released the first teaser for its upcoming miniseries “Dracula,” a co-production with BBC One, starring Claes Bang as the titular vampire.
And in this video, which you can view above, Bang is incredibly seductive as the legendary bloodsucking count, while everything else that goes on is incredibly disturbing. (Note the fingernail being peeled off of a rotting hand. Why??)
Yeah, if you’re into sexy vampires and grotesque horror, this adaptation of the classic Bram Stoker novel from “Sherlock” creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss is definitely for you.

At the launch of the BBC’s Dracula, airing this New Year, here’s what its cast and creators shared about their new 3-part drama…
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
It won’t all be tinsel and Aled Jones on TV this festive season. To balance out the sweetness, BBC One has prepared us a dread delight in the form of a new adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula. It comes from Sherlock creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, who’ve turned their attention from the most-filmed fictional character of all time to the second most-filmed fictional character of all time. What kind of adaptation is it? One that’s both funny and horrifying, paying homage to what’s gone before while delivering a swaggeringly confident new take on the source material – which is more varied than one might think, as Moffat pointed out at the launch.

The BBC has lifted the coffin lid on the first teaser trailer for Dracula, its co-production with Netflix from the makers of Sherlock.
The three-part series, which stars Claes Bang as Count Dracula, is written by Sherlock’s Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat and produced by Hartswood Films.
The series, which finished filming in August, is inspired by Bram Stoker’s classic novel and will re-introduce the world to Dracula, the vampire who made evil sexy.
In Transylvania in 1897, the blood-drinking Count is drawing his plans against Victorian London, and judging by the teaser, the series will be full of gruesome nastiness that will not be for the faint of heart.
The trailer features blood-spattered letters, a fly in an eyeball, loose fingernails, and Bang whispering menacingly to a terrified victim: “Try and stay calm, you’re doing very well.”
Jonny Campbell (Westworld), Damon Thomas (Killing Eve) and Paul McGuigan (Sherlock) direct the series.
