- Field Marshal of Germany's Army Group Don on the Eastern Front in the Soviet Union from 1942 to 1944.
- In 1942, Manstein had a luxurious headquarters train of wagons-lits -- a "drawing room on wheels" which had belonged to the Queen of Yugoslavia.

Various historians, including Gerhard Weinberg, have pointed out that Manstein's version of the events at Stalingrad in his memoir is distorted and several events described there were probably invented. "Because of the sensitivity of the Stalingrad question in post-war Germany, Manstein worked as hard to distort the record on this matter as on his massive involvement in the murder of Jews", wrote Weinberg.
