For the first time in nearly a century, The Atlantic magazine will publish a new play: The Ghost of Slavery by Anna Deavere Smith will debut across 32 pages of the publication’s December issue.
The play, the centerpiece of a Reconstruction-themed issue, was posted on the Atlantic’s website today.
The Ghost of Slavery is set in Baltimore and Annapolis in the 1860s and the present, and, according to a description provided by the magazine, explores the power of historical trauma to persist for generations. The magazine describes the play as “a searing drama of great emotional and historical complexity set in two time periods, the effect of which is not just to bring history vividly (and at times painfully) to life, or to make plain the injustices meted out to Black Americans across centuries, but to make readers and audiences see anew the connections between past and present.”

Lew Wallace's 1880 novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ" has been adapted into film many times. Much like the regular remakes of "A Star is Born," including the 2018 version, every adaptation reveals something about where Hollywood was at the time of its making. The story is a sprawling biblical epic, one that suggests a kind of maximum blockbuster potential, with naval war scenes and gladiatorial combat. Silent adaptations were made in 1909 and 1927, but the most enduring (and human) take on the story was the four-hour 1959 epic directed by William Wyler.
So why did the 2016 take on "Ben-Hur" fail to make any kind of impact -- or even its budget back at the box office? It's not as if the story is any less rich in the current day. Positive memories of the definitive Wyler take on the story surely linger. And that story's brand of action and masculine themes,...

Where the industry now embraces the trend of "too big to fail" superhero blockbusters, there was a point in Hollywood history where sprawling religious epics were the big ticket item, with "Ben-Hur" enduring as one of the most successful of its kind. It would be over 38 years until "Titanic," followed by "The Return of the King," would break the unprecedented Oscar streak set by William Wyler's 1959 epic, which took home 11 Academy Awards in one night.
Based on General Lew Wallace's 1880 novel of the same name, "Ben-Hur" stars former Hollywood megastar Charlton Heston as the affluent Jewish prince who is thrust on an epic journey of faith, friendship, and betrayal after his best friend Messala (Stephen Boyd) imprisons him for speaking ill against the Roman Empire.
Clocking in at over three and a half hours, "Ben-Hur" is as much an acting showcase as it is a spectacular display of scope.

A good stretch of Hollywood history saw the movie-making capital go full force on the religious epic, which almost always featured a spectacularly huge cast, budget and runtime. For every "King of Kings," there was a "Greatest Story Ever Told" right behind it. If one adaptation were produced in the silent era, a sprawling Technicolor remake would usually follow a few decades later ("The Ten Commandments"). Of course you can't speak about this specific period without addressing the mighty reign of "Ben-Hur" on the big screen.

While the bubble would eventually burst in the early '60s, the biblical epic was a favorite genre in '50s Hollywood. Producers and audiences sought bigger and more lavish widescreen productions every year. The religious, ancient-world backdrop of these movies let them film in "exotic" European or Middle Eastern locales and employ armies of extras. Marketed to churchgoing audiences and the mainstream alike, they were expensive, action-packed, and romantic. When it came to walking this line, one of the best movies in the genre was William Wyler's 1959 historical drama "Ben-Hur."

With Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A tale of Christ spawning a 1907 and 1925 silent film, the 1959 Oscar Winning epic we all known and love, and a 2003 animated feature I only just found out about that somehow saw Charlton Heston reprise one of his most famous roles, going after Timur Bekmembetov’s new version of the classic story for being a remake is a bit redundant at this stage. And any way, this is a “reimagining”, a “re-adaption”, a “new interpertation”. But what does that mean exactly? Well, if Ben-Hur 2016 is anything to go by, it means generic, soap opera-esque story telling, and clinging onto the memory of the past. Some changes have made to the original story, with Jewish nobleman Judah Ben-Hur's (Jack Huston) long-time friendship with adoptive brother Messalla (Toby Kebbell), a soldier in the Roman army, shattered when he is betrayed after taking the blame for...

The wheels are coming off in Hollywood's race to make biblical epics that galvanize faith-based moviegoers and TV viewers on a grand scale, as well as general consumers interested in ancient tales (otherwise known as sword-and-sandals films). Case in point: Timur Bekmambetov's Ben-Hur delivered an abysmal $11.2 million opening at the North American box office over the Aug. 19-21 weekend, despite a production budget of nearly $100 million. The movie is based on Lew Wallace's classic 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, and not the Oscar-winning 1959 film famously starring Charlton

The fifth in a string of adaptations of Ben-Hur: A Tale Of The Christ by Lew Wallace, the epic action drama made a rather dismal $11.35m over the weekend according to Box Office Mojo - which isn't great news, considering the film's estimated $100m budget.

The last of the summer's movie epics is a digitalized eyesore hobbled in every department by staggering incompetence. I'm talking about Ben-Hur, a remake of William Wyler's 1959 milestone (there was also a 1925 silent version) that won Charlton Heston an Oscar in the title role and put the climactic chariot race in the action-movie canon. No time capsule inclusion or little gold men for this pisspoor reboot, however. Executive producers Mark Burnett and his wife Roma Downey have been pushing projects — The Bible on TV, Son of God in theaters...

The movies have long been fascinated by Ben-hur, Lew Wallace’s 1880 bestselling novel – two silent versions, a 1907 short one and a spectacular 1925 feature film, and the familiar 1959 Technicolor classic with Charlton Heston. This will be at least the 4th movie version.
The 1925 version has the most thrilling chariot race, with a raw energy and real sense of danger – very real danger as the director hired Italian men skilled with horses to essentially run a chariot race, with all the inherent dangers (if you have never seen it, you really should). Memories of that gripping, cinematic chariot race helped prompt director William Wyler to remake Ben-hur in 1959, in full color and sound, with a top-star and all the epic “cast of thousands” grandeur of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Now a new technology has its say with the old story -with CGI effects and 3D.

Bear with Ben-Hur. At first, the new adaptation of Lew Wallace’s New Testament soap opera seems impersonal, as dusty and ornamented as any movie in which robed Jews and Romans argue about gods and kings in accents of vaguely British origin. But wait, because there will come a moment when the hero is accused of conspiracy and sentenced to row a warship as a slave—at which point the movie jumps forward five years, into a terrifically grotesque galley sequence, with Jack Huston’s Judah Ben-Hur abruptly transformed from a princely non-entity into a long-haired, dirt-seamed wild man of vengeance, his voice permanently hoarse.
From the galley slaves’ point of view (which is all this Ben-Hur shows), the Roman trireme is an insane war machine, where orders to row are repeated from above even as arrows zip through the oar-holes and hot tar drips from the deck, until an...

Vividly re-imagined, the new Ben-Hur is a lot of fun to watch, in part because it follows the outline of William Wyler's famed film while injecting fresh new elements. It's not a classic, by any means, but it certainly exceeds expectations. Some things can't be improved upon, such as the legendary chariot race. To be fair, that epic sequence from 1959, directed by Yakima Canutt and Andrew Marton and influenced heavily by the 1925 silent version, is burned into my brain from more than two dozen viewings and still sends chills down my spine, so I can't imagine any restaging would ever come close. Taken as a whole, however, this is a more than respectable staging of the material. It all started with Lew Wallace's...

The good news is that the story of Ben-Hur is so rock solid that not even the director of “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” can screw it up completely. The sixth feature-length film or miniseries to be adapted from Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel, “Ben-Hur: A Tale of The Christ,” Timur Bekmambetov’s take on the religious epic inevitably lacks the grandeur of Fred Niblo’s 1925 silent or the girth of William Wyler’s 1959 Oscar-hoarding classic. After all, this is 2016 (more specifically, the summer of 2016), a time when movies about Jesus are pitched only to the converted, and blockbusters can only be longer than 120 minutes if they end with two iconic superheroes fighting each other to a stalemate.
But if this new “Ben-Hur” was only provided with a fraction of the potential that’s been afforded to its predecessors, it sometimes finds the strength to reach out and scrape against its frustratingly low ceiling.

What's the point of making a cut-rate version of Ben-Hur? Of creating a chariot race so heavily digitized and over-edited that it's the worst scene in the picture? Of casting lightweights in the leading roles? Of laying a wailing modern pop song over the end credits? Since its birth as a novel 136 years ago, Lew Wallace's grand melodrama of a Jewish prince whose life intersects with that of Jesus under Roman rule in Judea has always been a Grand Event — as a best-selling book, a stage spectacle that toured for decades and two spectacular

If each generation gets the movie spectacles they deserve, then we probably had the new “Ben-Hur” — a scattered and hokey, if well-meaning, mess — coming. Marking the improbable collaboration of action-fantasy director Timur Bekmambetov (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Killer”), devout Christian producing spouses Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, and Oscar-winning screenwriter John Ridley (“12 Years a Slave”), this latest adaptation turns novelist General Lew Wallace’s 1880 “tale of the Christ” — brotherhood, vengeance and gospel writ Roman Empire-large — into a mad movie dash from prince’s palace to slave ship to chariot race. But even in this fertile age for popular...

Another big-budget 2016 summer event film could be in trouble at the U.S. box office. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the adaptation from Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer version of Ben-hur is on track to open in the $14 million to $15 million range over the August 19-21 weekend, which reportedly cost just under $100 million to produce.
The site also indicates that the studios still have three weeks to make their final marketing push, including targeting faith-based moviegoers. Mark Burnett and Roma Downey are the film's executive producers and were the producing team behind the hit movie Son Of God and the big hit miniseries The Bible.

The film is Timur Bekmambetov's version of Ben-hur, which is based Lew Wallace’s 1880 timeless novel, Ben-hur: A Tale Of The Christ. and Jack Huston, Toby Kebbell, Toby Kebbell, Morgan Freeman, Rodrigo Santoro, Nazanin Boniadi, Ayelet Zorer, and Sofia Black-d'Elia.

Can you believe it? Nobody in 2016 cares about a new Ben-Hur. The $100 million epic is tracking for a dreary $14-$15 million opening at the box office over the August 19-21 weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter -- not a great start for a film that cost nearly $100 million to make. Though THR notes that MGM and Paramount still have "three weeks to make their final marketing push, including targeting faith-based moviegoers," right now the Timur Bekmambetov-directed film is shaping up to be a pretty disappointing investment. A lot of the film's success or failure will also likely depend on overseas grosses. Starring Jack Huston as the title character along with Toby Kebbell, Morgan Freeman, Nazanin Boniada, and Rodrigo Santoro, this is the third adaptation of Lew Wallace's 1880 novel, the most famous being the 1959 version starring Charlton Heston that won a record 11 Oscars. The plot centers on a Jewish...

It won't be long before another Ben-hur is in the marketplace - the fourth such adaptation of Lew Wallace's 1880 novel but the first projected in 3-D. Timur Bekmambetov is in the director's chair this time, marking his first feature since the disappointing Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and he has Jack Huston and Toby Kebbell has his leads, which typically isn't a bad place... You’d be forgiven for losing track of Paramount Pictures and MGM’s grand Ben-Hur reboot. Set for release long after Independence Day: Resurgence, Star Trek Beyond and Warner’s Suicide Squad, Timur Bekmambetov’s long-gestating reboot is all but set to cap off the summer blockbuster season next month, but there hasn’t been an awful lot of fanfare to trumpet its arrival.
Hoping to stoke excitement today is an all-new, minute-long trailer for Ben-Hur that chronicles Paramount’s modern redo of one of the greatest stories ever told. Taking point as the titular, disgraced prince and merchant, Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) stages the comeback to end all comebacks in the snippet above, as he plots revenges on his adopted brother Messala (Toby Kebbell), who framed our title hero for a crime he didn’t commit.

The 1959 version of Ben-Hur with Charlton Heston is a masterpiece. I love that movie, but it’s getting a remake for modern audiences and director Timur Bekmambetov is giving it a stylish Fast and Furious-style makeover. As much I adore the original film, this remake looks like it will provide some fun and enjoyable action-packed entertainment. There’s no way it will be as good as the '59 film, though, which took home 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Paramount Pictures and MGM have released two new TV spots for the film entitled “Legend” and “Combo” and they offer us a bit of new footage from the film.

The Epic Classic Ben-hur is next up on Hollywoods Remake list, and now we have some character posters!
Ben-Hur is considered a classic. Released in 1959, starring the great Charlton Heston, had the largest budget of it's time. $15 Million! It became the second highest grossing film of it's time! Needless to say it is a timeless classic. But there comes a time in every films life that it has to be remade. That is basically the rule of Hollywood now!
And now that comes to pass. Earlier this year we were given a trailer that was met with pretty mixed reactions, but now the remake has a new set of character posters! Check them out here:
Pretty cool right? My personal favorite is Morgan Freeman! Reguardless of how cheesy he looks in the dreads! Marketing for the film is really starting to ramp up with to get us ready for their August 19th release date.

Where do you begin when remaking one of the most decorated movies of all time? That’s a burden shouldered by director Timur Bekmambetov, who will be steering his new rendition of Ben-Hur into theaters on August 19.
In anticipation of the retooled sword and sandals epic, which will once again draw from Lew Wallace’s seminal 1880 novel of the same name, Paramount has rolled out a new trailer and featurette for the summer blockbuster. Designed to chronicle the brotherhood shared between Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston) and Messala (Toby Kebbell), it isn’t long before the latter thrusts a wedge between the two, stripping Huston’s respected prince of his title. One gruelling spell in slavery later and Ben-Hur remerges, this time seeking redemption.
Also on board for Paramout’s big-budget tentpole are Morgan Freeman, Rodrigo Santoro, Nazanin Boniadi, Ayelet Zorer, Sofia Black-d’Elia and Danish actor Pilou Asbæk as Judean emperor Pontius Pilate.
Below, you’ll be able to get a play-by-play breakdown on how Bekmambetov and his team recreated the chariot race, widely considered to be one of the most iconic scenes in cinematic history. No pressure, then.
Ben-Hur is expected to race into theaters on August 19.

It’s not so much that another version of “Ben-Hur” is a crime against cinema — Lew Wallace‘s book inspired a couple of silent film versions, the 1959 classic, and a more recent TV miniseries — it’s more that there doesn’t really seem to be much necessity for another movie. But there is no idea in Hollywood […]

It's time for another epic where a slave has to take down the Roman empire a notch by getting revenge on someone who betrayed them. Ben-Hur is a new adaptation of the classic novel by Lew Wallace about two brothers who take their rivalry into the arena of chariot-racing. Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston) was meant to be a prince, but his brother Messala (Toby Kebbell) betrayed him by accusing Judah of treason. After a bout with slavery, Judah is back, but now the only way to really get vengeance is to take him down in a chariot race so Rome's best can see him stripped of his glory. It's Gladiator, but with more chariots. Watch? Here's the first trailer for the remake of Ben-Hur from Paramount Pictures: Ben-Hur is the epic story of Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston of "Boardwalk Empire"), a prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted...

'Ben-Hur' 2016 with Jack Huston: Chariot race to the death. 'Ben-Hur' 2016 trailer: 'Gladiator' meets 'Fast Seven' meets 'Star Wars' meets… Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have released the trailer for their 2016 Ben-Hur remake (or reboot or readaptation) – a.k.a. Fast and Furious A.D., as one wag called it in an online comment. Instead of grandiose spectacle featuring at its core a “human” story with Christian overtones, this chariot-and-sandals epic is being sold as Gladiator meets Fast Seven meets Spartacus: Blood and Sand meets Star Wars – with Morgan Freeman's Sheik Ilderim as the Roman Empire's dreadlocked version of Alec Guinness' Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi. Say what you will, the trailer-makers sure know their target audience. And that's not the same crowd that would go check out what's usually referred to in the U.S. media as “faith” (i.e., Christian) movies. One assumes that particular audience segment will be getting...

Check out the trailer, along with the first poster, for the timeless epic, Ben Hur, based on the best-selling novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of Christ.
Paramount Pictures’ newest version of the timeless classic is one of the most-anticipated movies of 2016.
Will be interesting to see how this film compares to the 1959 classic, directed by William Wyler, produced by Sam Zimbalist for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and starring Charlton Heston, Stephen Boyd, Jack Hawkins, Hugh Griffith and Haya Harareet. The nine-minute chariot race has become one of cinema’s most famous sequences, and the film score, composed and conducted by Miklós Rózsa, is the longest ever composed for a film and was highly influential on cinema for more than 15 years.
The 2016 version’s score is from composer Marco Beltrami.
