Shonda Rhimes was honored at Variety’s Power of Women, presented by Lifetime, in New York on Thursday for her work with the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, a non-profit dance school that offers classes to disenfranchised communities.
Rhimes was aware of Debbie Allen’s work from a young age, having been a fan of her 1980s TV show “Fame.” Years later, Rhimes’ eldest daughter took classes at the academy, and Rhimes and Allen became fast friends. Allen eventually became an executive producer, director and actor on “Grey’s Anatomy,” and in 2022, Rhimes opened a permanent location for Dada in Mid-City.
“They call her Ms. Allen. Her students are aged 3 to 93. They are all sizes, all colors, all abilities, all talent levels,” Rhimes said on stage at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.. “Some are kids like mine — overprivileged. But some are not. Some don’t have homes. Some cannot pay for classes.

Now that nearly two years have passed since W.N.B.A. star Brittney Griner served a nine-month sentence for cannabis possession at a Russian penal colony, she has begun speaking out about the suffering she experienced while behind bars. In a New York Times interview, Griner said she felt dehumanized when a guard fastened a chain to her handcuffs, treating her like a dog, and how, in another instance, doctors forced her to undress so they could photograph her nude. In her darkest moments, she contemplated death by suicide.

It’s well known that in her decades-long career, Shonda Rhimes — the writer behind such television sensations as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “Bridgerton” — has smashed pervasive racist-casting tropes, and in doing so, changed the literal face of TV, whether that meant having “Scandal” revolve around Kerry Washington’s antihero Olivia Pope or elevating Regé-Jean Page to thirsty heights as a Black duke in Regency England on “Bridgerton.”
What’s talked about less is how Rhimes has changed the way people speak. Any parent of a teenager who’s heard the derisive usage of “pick me” from Meredith’s “Pick me! Choose me! Love me!” speech in Season 2 of “Grey’s Anatomy” — used to describe, according to the Urban Dictionary, “a woman that is willing to do anything for male approval” — can tell you of Rhimes’ enduring power. Especially since that oratory was delivered in 2005, and given new life on TikTok.

Harvey Weinstein – Verdict Overturned
Harvey Weinstein’s guilty verdict in his 2018 rape case in New York has been overturned and thrown out.

Annette Bening is a five-time Oscar nominee, having recently garnered a bid for her leading turn in Netflix’s biographical drama “Nyad.” Bening is clearly having a great year as she also features in Peacock’s limited series “Apples Never Fall,” which could bring her back to the Emmys for the first time since 2006.
The limited series, adapted from the novel of “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty, depicts four adult children trying to piece together the mystery behind the disappearance of their mother, played by Bening. Sam Neil, Jake Lacy, and Allison Brie all turn in fabulous supporting performances but this is Bening’s show, with the veteran actress performing at the peak of her powers.

Imagine being sexually assaulted only to be told by the perpetrator that it never happened and that it was all in your imagination. Such an experience will be too much for anyone to handle and that was exactly what happened to “Scandal” actress Kerry Washington.

On Saturday, April 20, the actress attended the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books Event at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles where she was asked by Erica D. Smith to share how such experience helped shape her life.

Peacock’s new limited series “Apples Never Fall” is cut from the same cloth as “Big Little Lies,” with both shows adapted from the novels of Australian author Liane Moriarty.
“Apples Never Fall” follows a family, led by four adult children, trying to piece together the mysterious disappearance of their mother Joy (Oscar-nominee Annette Bening). Bening is reliably excellent in this limited series, as is “Jurassic Park” star Sam Neil, who plays her on-screen husband. And Jake Lacy and Allison Brie shine as two of the four adult kids. All four performances have been praised by critics and its these turns that could lead the Emmy charge for the series.

Hollywood actress Kerry Washington, renowned for her portrayal of Broomhilda in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’, has opened up about the impact of sexual assault on her life.

In response to a question about how the abuse has influenced her, Washington told Erika D. Smith that it was one of the earliest instances in her life when someone denied the truth to her, causing her to doubt her intuition.
According to ‘People’, ‘Thicker Than Water’ chronicles Washington’s journey of self-discovery, particularly focusing on the revelation that her father, Earl Washington, was not her biological father, which she learned in the spring of 2018 at the age of 41.

Delroy Lindo is heading back to the big screen.
The actor, who in recent years has starred in Hulu’s Unprisoned and appeared in Netflix’s The Harder They Fall, has closed a deal to join Michael B. Jordan in the untitled supernatural horror thriller that Ryan Coogler is directing for Warner Bros.
Little is known about that project — and what is known has yet to be confirmed by either the studio or Coogler. Insiders say the feature is set in the Jim Crow-era South, and possibly involves both vampires and Southern supernatural traditions. Jordan may be playing dual roles — as twin brothers.
Lindo’s part is being kept in the coffin but one source describes it as having a musical element to it. The feature is gearing for shoot later this spring in New Orleans, and recently cast Jack O’Connell as a villain.

Mario Van Peebles has been tapped to direct “That’ll Be the Day,” the story of how Buddy Holly and other musicians of the late 1950s helped give birth to rock ‘n’ roll and influence the wider societal and cultural landscape, including the civil rights movement.
Music has been central to much of Van Peebles’ work, from his 1991 gangster movie “New Jack City” to his work on “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” which he co-executive produced for Hulu. Van Peebles is currently writing a musical stage tribute to his father Melvin Van Peebles, to be performed at New York City’s Lincoln Center later this year.
“America’s tumultuous cultural melting pot has produced transcendent musical talent, including Buddy Holly, who was our first bad ass rock ’n’ roll nerd,” Van Peebles said in a statement.

Everything old is new again when it comes to TV detective shows. First, Natasha Lyonne did her best Columbo on Peacock’s quirky Poker Face, then Clive Owen resurrected iconic gumshoe Sam Spade on AMC’s sleek Monsieur Spade. Now Colin Farrell is taking a shot at the old-school private eye game with Apple TV+’s Sugar — and what do you know, this one works, too. A stylishly shot throwback to classic film noir with lean and mean storytelling and smart and lively dialogue, Sugar (premiering Friday, Apr. 5; I’ve seen four of the eight episodes) doesn’t attempt to reinvent the wheel…...

Mother’s Day weekend 2019 marked a turning point in the young life of Madhuri Shekar.
It all started two years before with a phone call from a woman named Kate Navin, then head of theater for Audible. Navin said she’d recently been armed with money to develop original works from emerging play- wrights, and she was calling to offer Shekar, just a year out of Juilliard, the chance to write. The only catch: Shekar’s play would have to be crafted as an audio-only production.
Shekar’s answer to this challenge was “Evil Eye,” a 100-minute potboiler that revolves around daily telephone conversations between a mother in India and a daughter in Los Angeles. The finished play was released on Audible in May 2019. For Shekar, the impact on her career was immediate. Within weeks, she was negotiating a deal with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Blumhouse for the movie version...

Sofia Vergara is back on our small screens in a big way thanks to the her new Netflix series “Griselda.” The lavish production chronicles the rise of Griselda Blanco, known as the “cocaine Godmother,” as she flees from Medellín, Colombia, to Miami and creates one of the most notorious cartels in history.
Vergara gives her best performance in years as the ruthless, demanding, and brutal Griselda. She owns every scene she’s in and eats up not just the scenery but the entire cast, too. She commands every moment and delivers a complex portrait of a powerful woman, with critics agreeing Vergara is at the top of her game.
Barry Levitt (Empire) observed: “‘Griselda’ has given Vergara the chance to prove that she’s also a gifted dramatic actor — a challenge she more than rises to. Vergara (who also serves as executive producer) practically dissolves into the role, delivering an astonishing performance…...
