- American-born violinist, first active in vaudeville and on Broadway. In England from 1912, he became a popular leader of various dance bands in the 1920's. He conducted several tours of Australia and New Zealand, returning to the U.S. West Coast on several occasions. From 1934, a re-formed group at the Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco featured Betty Grable as chief female vocalist. Whidden's popularity had declined by the early 1940's.
