St. Vincent has some strong opinions on those dramatic covers of “Hallelujah” you could often hear on competition shows like American Idol, calling them “the worst thing in the world.”
“Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ is one of the best songs ever written, period,” the singer told BBC Radio 2 in a recent interview. “It’s an absolute masterpiece, it took them however many years to write. The song itself is about the complication that it is to be alive, and the agony and the ecstasy and all of the inherent conflict therein.

St. Vincent is tired of singers covering Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” while stripping away its original meaning. In a recent interview with BBC Radio, she called such covers “the worst thing in the world.”
Speaking to host Jo Whiley, the artist born Annie Clark praised “Hallelujah” as an “absolute masterpiece” and referenced how it took Cohen “many years to write” the song.

“[It’s] about the complication that it is to be alive — and the agony and the ecstasy and everything and all of the inherent conflict therein,” she continued, before blasting awful covers of “Hallelujah” on televised singing competitions.
“Then you know how for a period of time it became a song that people would, like, cover on American Idol? People would sing it on American Idol and just be like [imitates vocal fry tone], ‘Haaalelujah! Halleluuuujah!’ And it’s just the worst thing in the world. Like, it’s...

Exclusive: Insanity Group, the UK agency that represents stars including Love Island host Maya Jama, has apologized to former client Char Ellesse following a Zoom call about her social media output.
Ellesse recently quit Insanity as a result of the call on September 29. She said the company displayed a lack of understanding for the needs of Black and intersectional content creators when it requested that she increase the regularity of her social media updates.
Ellesse posted a 90-second edited excerpt from the hour-long video call on her Instagram account last month. An industry source brought it to the attention of Deadline, saying it had been the talk of the UK agency community in recent days.
Ellesse said she felt “bulldozed” and ambushed on the “unacceptable” call. She accused Insanity of “gaslighting” her over her belief that an Instagram algorithm tweak had reduced engagement for content creators from diverse backgrounds.

Ahead of their new film and TV podcast, radio’s odd couple take questions from actors, directors and Observer readers about optimism, the films they disagree on – and biscuits
Mark Kermode (film critic) and Simon Mayo (audio host) appear simultaneously on video link in appropriately themed rooms. Mayo’s is his spare bedroom, which boasts some excellent wallpaper featuring graphic versions of 7in singles. “Every single record label and band and identifying mark has been removed,” he notes. “But if you’re a veteran like I am, you can spot a Fontana single or a Cps or Epic…” Kermode is in a teeny room in a house he moved into only yesterday. Unsurprisingly, his is not a fabulous backdrop (unpacked boxes and what looks like a bunk bed) but somehow, he’s managed to make his computer camera reveal him in moody black and white. “Oh God, how did I do that?...

Refresh for updates… Tributes have been flooding in for Meat Loaf, the prolific singer and actor born Marvin Lee Aday who has died Thursday at 74.
Many of those who worked alongside him as both singer and actor were first to take to Twitter.
Global superstar Cher said she “had so much fun with Meat Loaf” when they released hit single Dead Ringer for Love, adding: “Am I imagining it or are amazing people in the arts dying every day?”
Boy George, another mega music star, wrote: “Rip Meatloaf. Love and prayers to all his family and close friends.”
The singer then joyfully recalled being “turned upside down” by Meat Loaf in a Chinese restaurant in St John’s Wood, London.

Paul McCartney’ new double A-sided single “I Don’t Know” and “Come On to Me,” made its world debut Wednesday, arriving after a week of mysterious picture clues posted by the McCartney team on social media. McCartney also announced he’ll release a new album, “Egypt Station,” on Sept. 7, for which each track but one was produced by Greg Kurstin.
“I Don’t Know” is a somber ballad of the type McCartney has been long known for: “I’ve got crows out my window, dogs out my door, I don’t think I can take any more. What am I doing wrong, I don’t know,” McCartney sings pensively. On the other side “Come On To Me” is a bouncy rocker. The latter caught fans by surprise when it was played during a brief concert at the Philharmonic Pub in Liverpool during his outing with James Corden to film “Carpool Karaoke.

For the last 55 years, there’s always been one guaranteed litmus test to separate real Doctor Who fans from posers. True Whovians know that the main character of the show is called ‘The Doctor’ – and anyone calling him ‘Doctor Who’ clearly doesn’t watch the series. Now, though, that’s all up in the air thanks to the departing Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi, who’s controversially explained that either is valid. Heresy!
Capaldi made the statement on BBC Radio 2’s Access All Areas during an interview with Jo Whiley, where he said the following:
“We can get into a fight about whether he’s called The Doctor, or Doctor Who, the reason I call him Doctor Who is because when you’re in the street, people don’t shout out, ‘There’s The Doctor!’ They go, ‘Hey, Doctor Who!’ That’s his street name. His street name is Doctor Who.

While Peter Capaldi’s regeneration will undoubtedly be angled as the fitting finale to “Twice Upon a Time,” it seems the Doctor Who Christmas Special includes another scene that is just as emotional.
At least, that’s according to BBC Radio host Jo Whiley (via Radio Times), who paid a visit to Doctor Who‘s festive-themed set just as filming was beginning to wrap. It’s all part of a new radio documentary – entitled Jo Whiley’s Access All Areas Special, it’ll air via BBC2 on Thursday 21st December, so keep your eyes peeled and ears cocked – but perhaps most exciting of all is Whiley’s comments about a scene that left “everyone in tears.”
It’s definitely not Peter Capaldi’s regeneration, which itself has been described as a tour-de-force; instead, Jo Whiley draws attention to a tear-jerker that is not so much about the famous Time Lord...

Before we meet Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth – and first ever female – Doctor, we have to make a sad farewell to Peter Capaldi’s current version of the iconic character. The actor will put in his last appearance as the Time Lord in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special, titled “Twice Upon A Time,” which will see him teaming up with the First Doctor (played by Harry Potter‘s David Bradley).
We don’t know too much about what’s in store for us just yet, but writer Steven Moffat has previously revealed that the episode will explore how different the Doctor is now to when he first started. That’s certainly an interesting route to head down, and if recent comments from DJ Jo Whiley are any indication, we should expect something fairly emotional from the upcoming outing as well.

We’re now just a few weeks away from the Doctor Who Christmas special, “Twice Upon a Time,” which will see Peter Capaldi give his final performance as the Doctor, before being replaced by Jodie Whittaker. Let’s cast our minds back to January for a moment, though, and recall the shock we felt when the actor first announced that he was leaving the sci-fi series after three seasons.

The reign of the Twelfth Doctor is coming to an end, as Peter Capaldi has announced that the tenth season of Doctor Who will be his last one in the titular role.
Speaking with Jo Whiley on the BBC Radio 2 show, Capaldi revealed his decision to step away from the Tardis following the conclusion of Doctor Who Season 10, which premieres on April 15th and ends in the December holiday season.
Capaldi’s forthcoming exit will coincide with the departure of Steven Moffat, the series’ head writer and executive producer, who has held the showrunner reins since taking over the duties in 2010.
Here’s what Capaldi told Whiley about his bittersweet decision to move on from the iconic role he has played since Matt Smith passed on the torch (or rather, the sonic screwdriver) of the iconic role to him in 2013.

Southcliffe, Channel 4's new four-part drama about a spree killing in an English village, was always going to be too relentlessly bleak for some tastes. However, if you could stomach the storyline, the first two episodes of the series (oddly scheduled on successive evenings) were utterly captivating television.
Unflinching, bold and harrowing, it posed uncomfortable questions and didn't hold back or censor the experience for viewers.
Sean Harris's performance as local outsider 'The Commander' was pitch perfect and scarily real, while Rory Kinnear as homecoming TV reporter and Anatol Yusef as sleazy cheat Paul, who loses his family in the tragedy, are also worthy of special note in a series that is overflowing with stunning actors and gut-wrenching moments.
Yes, the lingering camera shots were possibly a bit over-egged. And, yes, the regular jumping backwards and forwards in time was slightly frustrating. However,...

Over 500 artists have played radio1’s Live Lounge. Starting on Jo Whiley’s morning radio show it has become a fixture on the slot, being passed down to Fearne Cotton and currently Sara Cox.
The best of current artists have played their own hit and their own interpretation of a chart hit, usually one very different to their genre. Some don’t take it very serious (See the recent Queen Of The Stone Age cover of Blurred Lines) but some make a cheap pop song and make it rather good.
