“Drank someone else’s juice and left only the rind,” Katie Crutchfield boasts on her excellent new Waxahatchee album, Tigers Blood. She’s got a right to sound cocky. The long-time indie-rock underdog hero won herself a lot of new fans with Saint Cloud, her 2020 breakthrough hit, going for a laid-back style of heartland rock & roll twang. But Tigers Blood is even more rugged and confident, a master storyteller fully aware she’s on a hot streak. She sings about adult romance, struggling for sobriety, the day-to-day work of holding...

Sean Ono Lennon may have initially rejected the astrology his family embraced growing up, but when it came to his new album, it felt like the very stars were against him. “I just felt like there was too much cosmic interference,” he tells Rolling Stone of Asterisms, a genreless wash of instrumental music that flirts with jazz, rock, and electronic. In the end, though, the planets aligned, and the record dropped Friday on John Zorn’s Tzadik label.

Back in 2002, just a few weeks after releasing their album Become You, the Indigo Girls appeared on Mountain Stage, the long-running nationally syndicated radio show based in Charleston, West Virginia.
Towards the end of their set, the duo delivered a lovely rendition of “Closer to Fine,” already the band’s signature song, decades before it would gain a new audience by its appearance in Greta Gerwig’s pink-hued blockbuster Barbie.

To mark what would have been David Bowie’s 77th birthday today, Wilco have shared their live rendition of the music icon’s “Space Oddity.”
The cover was recorded during the band’s visit to Mountain Stage, NPR Music, and West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s long-running live radio show and features as the opening track on an upcoming compilation highlighting performances from the series.
“As a gratefully, if not begrudgingly, Earth-bound band, it’s always an honor and a challenge to tackle any of David Bowie’s space-soaring arrangements,” Wilco said in a statement.

Monday, January 8th, would’ve been David Bowie’s 77th birthday. To mark the occasion, Wilco has shared their rendition of Bowie’s 1969 hit, “Space Oddity.”
The release hails from Wilco’s 2023 performance on Mountain Stage (a public radio show distributed by NPR Music), and will be included on an upcoming compilation announced today titled Live On Mountain Stage: Outlaws and Outliers, due on April 19th via Oh Boy Records.
Presenting a wonderfully Wilco-esque take on “Space Oddity” — itself named the 43rd best song of all time by Consequence in 2012 — the band settles into an acoustic arrangement, allowing Jeff Tweedy’s vocals to masterfully convey the tune’s enduring appeal for humanity.
Speaking about the performance in a statement, the band said: “As a gratefully, if not begrudgingly, Earth-bound band, it’s always an honor and a challenge to tackle any of David Bowie’s space-soaring arrangements. Striving to reach...

For Bill Fay‘s 80th birthday, Jeff Tweedy is giving him the gift of flattery. The Wilco musician has shared his rendition of “Filled With Wonder Once Again,” which originally appeared on the English singer and songwriter’s 2020 album, Countless Branches.
For more than two decades, Wilco has performed “Be Not So Fearful” from Fay’s 1970 debut album Bill Fay during their sets. In 2007, Fay joined Wilco on stage at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire to perform the song together. It marked his first live performance in three decades.

After working as a musician for several decades, Pink is bound to have a song or two that she dislikes. She revealed that she had some regrets about the way a song might have hurt her husband. The song she regretted more is one that many of her fans likely paid little mind. Pink shared why a song recorded for the show SpongeBob SquarePants was a mistake.
Pink said a song she recorded in 2009 was a mistake
When asked about the most regrettable singles of her career, Pink admitted that there are many songs she no longer loves. The first that came to mind was “True Love,” a song she released in 2013. She opens the song with the lyrics, “Sometimes I hate every single stupid word you say/ Sometimes I wanna slap you in your whole face.”

Wilco surprised patrons of Poor David’s Pub in Dallas with an impromptu open mic night set.
While driving to Dallas for a show the following night as part of their ongoing U.S. tour, Wilco (per Jambase) saw the posting for the open mic and decided to stop in. The group performed without multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, but were billed on the sign-up sheet as Glenn Kotche & Friends, named after the band’s drummer.
The band’s 11-song set pulled heavily from their country-tinged first two albums, including cuts like “Too Far Apart” and “Passenger Side” from 1995’s A.M. and “Far, Far Away” from 1996’s Being There. They also delivered covers of Stoney Edwards’ country classic “She’s My Rock,” Texas native Doug Sahm’s “Give Back the Key to My Heart,” and “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You” from Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline.

Wilco have released their 13th studio album Cousin, out now via their own dBpm Records.
Produced by Cate Le Bon, Cousin marks the first Wilco album helmed by an outside producer since 2007’s Sky Blue Sky. According to a press release, Le Bon’s influence led the band to incorporate new instruments, including saxophone, cheap Japanese guitars, and a cinematic, New Wave-style drum machine.
“The amazing thing about Wilco is they can be anything,” Le Bon said in a statement. “They’re so mercurial, and there’s this thread of authenticity that flows through everything they do, whatever the genre, whatever the feel of the record. There aren’t many bands who are able to, this deep into a successful career, successfully change things up.”

Jeff Tweedy writes so well about his own music-making, there sometimes seems little worth adding: see his bestselling books (the annotated playlist World Within a Song: Music That Changed My Life and Life That Changed My Music is due November) and his Starship Casual Substack (Nb: the July 4 riff on Paul Simon’s “America”). But hey, outside perspective can be useful — as Cousin proves. It’s the first Wilco set since the ‘00s to use an outside producer, and it shows, in the best possible way.

We love rock & roll, and so do most moviegoers, which is why cinema is filled with heroes who get together with their friends to pound out some numbers. Whether they do it for fame and fortune or to just hang out with buddies, pop bands are inherently cinematic, tying together moving images and sound to create something spectacular. That’s particularly true of fictional groups, who often draw from real-world inspirations and transform them into moving protagonists or hated villains.
This list covers ten of the best fictional bands in cinema history. The key word here is “bands,” as we ignore solo acts, even from really good films. So Mac Sledge from Tender Mercies won’t show up, nor will Noni Jean from Beyond the Lights. Since 2007’s Sky Blue Sky, Wilco has settled into a more straightforward musical style defined by stripped-back, acoustic instrumentation and Jeff Tweedy’s confessional songwriting. The band’s latest, Cousin, seeks to fold Tweedy and company’s past into their present, exploring a more experimental and messy sound than their other recent releases.
This is due in no small part to Cate Le Bon’s varied production style. Cousin opens with the dense “Infinite Surprise,” whose main melodic hook is buried within layers of guitars, feedback, synths, and cacophonous strings. Tweedy’s vocals sound frailer than usual, almost frightened, which complements the track’s unsettling atmosphere. It’s perhaps the grandest opening statement to any Wilco album since Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’s “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.”

“I’m cousin to the world,” Jeff Tweedy said of the track in a statement. “I don’t feel like I’m a blood relation, but maybe I’m a cousin by marriage. It’s this feeling of being in it and out of it at the same time.”
Wilco previously shared “Evicted” from Cousin, due out September 29, less than 18 months after the long-running indie rock outfit released their 2022 double LP Cruel Country.

Jeff Tweedy never meant to be a memoirist. “I was kind of recruited to write a book based on some agent’s idea that I might be able to write something worth reading,” he says, recalling a conversation five or more years ago. “I said, ‘Sure, I guess.’ It felt accidental.” That somewhat inauspicious beginning led to Let’s Go (So We Can Get Back), the acclaimed memoir that Tweedy published in 2018. A couple of years later, he wrote a second bestseller, How to Write One Song, encouraging readers to tap into their own creativity.

Wilco are back with a new song, “Evicted,” which will appear on their next album, Cousin, out Sept. 29.
“Evicted” is, in many ways, quintessential Wilco, with its easy but moody country-rock palette. But there are flourishes of what celebrated Welsh musician Cate Le Bon — who produced Cousin — brought to the sessions, particularly a lead guitar that reverberates with an uncanny twang.

We’ve talked about this show many times already — including this week with our voices — and it was well positioned for numerous Emmy nominations before Season 2 debuted on Thursday. On paper, Rodney Crowell and Jeff Tweedy seem like an almost too-perfect pairing. Crowell once positioned himself as an alternative to the Nashville machine but, over the last 50 years, has become one of the town’s most accomplished and revered songwriters, while Tweedy is the consummate music nerd with a predilection for outsiders and a longstanding reverence for the classic country-rock of the 1960s and ’70s. Both share instincts for emotionally earnest lyrics and expanding the sonic terrain of traditional folk and blues.
On The Chicago Sessions, named after the Wilco Loft in the Windy City where the album was produced by Tweedy, Crowell’s delight and comfort in working with a kindred spirit is readily apparent. His recent efforts, including 2017’s Close Ties and 2021’s Triage, trend darker than his earlier work, showcasing the deepening crags of his weathered voice on songs about mortality and societal ills. It’s been a dreadful year — Ok, few years — for romcoms. This year gave us Shotgun Wedding, a J.Lo-starring smorgasbord about a destination wedding overrun by pirates; You People, Kenya Barris’ tone-deaf interracial-dating romcom whose big kiss was faked by CGI; and Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher’s Your Place or Mine, with leads that spent close to the entire movie on opposite sides of the country and had zero chemistry. Enter Ghosted, which is so dreadful it makes the aforementioned films look like When Harry Met Sally by comparison.

Jeff Tweedy fans were treated to an extra serving of the artist on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Wednesday night. After the frontman sat down with the comedian for an interview, he and his buddies in Wilco hit the stage to perform their song “Tired of Taking It Out on You.”
Released as the second single from Wilco’s 20222 double album Cruel Country, “Tired of Taking It Out on You” reflects how we as a society treat each other. To that end, the group’s subdued performance accompanied Tweedy’s contemplative lyrics. Watch Wilco run through “Tired of Taking It Out on You” below.
In Tweedy’s chat with Meyers, however, he decided to take it out on Late Night bandleader Fred Armisen for owing his wife Sue Miller “a lot of money.” Armisen got his big break while opening for Wilco doing standup after he was hired to...

Brian Cox and Alan Cumming become honorary Spice Girls in AppleTV+’s first look at their upcoming Carpool Karaoke: The Series episode.
The Scottish actors and longtime friends are taking the wheel and will be co-hosting the award-winning show on March 31. In a teaser clip, the Succession star gets candid with his friend.
“Now you see, there’s one thing I am really quite envious of what you’ve done,” Cox tells Cumming. “What would that be?” the Schmigadoon! star replies. “Well,” Cox begins and then looks mysteriously to the backseat to see if anyone will overhear him, “Spice Girls.” To which his friend responds, “Seriously? You’re a Spice Girls fan?”
“I’m a closet Spice Girls fan,” Cox says before Cumming kicks off their sing-along with “If You Wanna Be My Lover.”
After about 30 seconds of semi-off-key singing, the Succession actor chimes in again, saying, “I’m so glad that’s over.

While most contemporary music documentaries fall into the realm of self-produced hagiography, no one will be making that charge about “Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed,” a clear-eyes/hearts-full documentary coming from HBO Max documentary that had its world premiere at the Grammy Museum.
At a Q&a with Isbell and director Sam Jones following the screening of the film, which begins streaming April 7, moderator Colin Hanks, a big Isbell fan, asked the doc’s star: “What was it about this that made you go, ‘Yeah, I’m gonna do a doc,’ and really make yourself a little bit more raw than maybe you had even in your songs?”
“It’s because I didn’t know what was about to happen,” responded Isbell. “The whole reason I did this was because I was not informed of the consequences of doing this.” He was half-joking. “I just told Sam before...

Jeff Tweedy has shared a new version of Woody Guthrie’s classic labor song, “Union Maid,” which appears as a bonus track on the soundtrack for Jesse Eisenberg’s directorial debut When You Finish Saving the World.
Tweedy delivers a zippy, brisk rendition of the early-Forties anthem, which is sung from the perspective of a proud, take-no-bullshit union woman. “This union maid was wise to the tricks of the company spies,” Tweedy sings over his breezy acoustic guitar, “She’d never be fooled by a company stool/She’d always organize the guys.

Wasting no time, Star Wars: The Bad Batch‘s two-episode premiere (streaming now on Disney+) finds the titular mutant-clones evading angry crab monsters, pillaging Count Dooku’s abandoned palace, and (miraculously) managing to squeeze through the Empire far-reaching, ever-lengthening fingers.
The first episode, titled “The Spoils of War,” opens on a quiet tropical planet seemingly unbothered by Imperial interest. The tranquility proves temporary, as Wrecker, Hunter, and Echo (all voiced by The Clone Wars alum Dee Bradley Baker) burst out of a beachside grove with a swarm of riled-up crab aliens snapping at their heels. Will Bjork finally catch a break? She’s loved by the Recording Academy, but only to an extent. She has 15 past Grammy nominations and 15 past Grammy losses, making her one of the most nominated artists in Grammy history without a win. She’s currently behind only conductor Zubin Mehta (18), rapper Snoop Dogg (17), and mastering engineer Chris Gehringer (17). At this point the Grammys for her are like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. But maybe, just maybe, this time will be different.
Bjork received her sweet 16th Grammy nomination this year: Best Alternative Music Album for “Fossora.” It’s her ninth bid in the category, which makes her the most nominated woman in the history of the award, the most nominated solo artist, and the second most nominated artist overall behind Thom Yorke who has been recognized 10 times between his solo work and fronting the band Radiohead. But Radiohead have won three times,...

Back in the early spring of 2003, on April 4th to be exact, a trio of musicians took the tiny stage at Sir Benedict’s Tavern on the Lake in Duluth, Minnesota. What was meant as a casual gathering of friends to shoo away the cold weather blues — with guitar, mandolin, banjo, and their voices — evolved into a live act for the ages: Nearly two decades later, Trampled by Turtles have released their ninth studio album, Alpenglow.
