The crisis of leadership Britain has been plunged into over recent years merits sustained study as a cautionary tale. But it demands deeper and sharper analysis than is available in “This England,” a curiously indifferent six-part miniseries notionally centred on former Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s handling of the initial coronavirus outbreak, currently limping out on Sky’s U.K. arm.
When Winterbottom’s Revolution Films announced the project (originally titled “This Sceptred Isle”) last year – with Kenneth Branagh unveiled as the project’s Johnson – speculation was rife. Would the series be an ensemble satire, along the lines of Winterbottom’s rambunctious “24 Hour Party People”? Or an artfully sober inquiry, in the vein of the director’s Amanda Knox-inspired “The Face of an Angel”? In fact, it’s neither: what we’ve got is a hurriedly assembled primetime procedural that undermines its claim to rigorous accuracy from the off...

Instagram may be best known for selfies and photos of cafe breakfasts, but first-time producer Hannah Lehmann is using the platform to distribute her new web-series, The Out There..
Lehmann also wrote and stars in the 13-episode drama, which she believes is the first of its kind on Instagram in Australia..
Instagram is already gaining some traction as distribution platform overseas, recently used to distribute UK crime drama Shield 5, directed by Anthony Wilcox. In the Us, there.s sci-fi series Desert Friends, and CW.s comedy series JoJo Head was distributed via Instagram Stories..Last year, InstaMiniSeries released a 16 episode artistic series, Unbound, based on David Bowie's final album, 'Blackstar'.
The platform's accessibility appealed to Lehmann, who works in social media in her day job as a content designer.
.I was using these platforms most days when I worked, and I noticed that there was nothing like this [show] that existed.

Filmmaker Anthony Wilcox embarks upon his first feature film in the director’s chair with a commendable amount of composure - an attitude presumably gained from experience further down the ladder on films such as Hot Fuzz (2007) and Brighton Rock (2010). The debut in question, Hello Carter (2013), ventures where many British dramadies tend to fail; extracting the best of British awkwardness and amusing politeness to great effect, without sinking fast amidst deflatingly unfunny quips. Despite the film's origins, the eponymous protagonist, Carter (Charlie Cox), has no floppy fringe; neither does he have a mockney accent, or a gun stashed somewhere about his person. It's thoroughly refreshing.

Exclusive: Festival screening of Yes and Yes [pictured] pulled due to Russia’s new anti-obscenity law.
Russia’s new anti-obscenity law - in effect since July 1 - has forced Vologda’s Voices Film Festival (July 4-8) to pull its screening of Valeria Gai Germanika’s Yes and Yes, which had been planned for Monday evening [July 7].

★★☆☆☆ There's nothing more soul-crushing than a romantic comedy devoid of either of the genre's requisite defining aspects. At least when the love story is lacking, laughs will usually pick up the slack; if it's humourless, the passion can take the weight. Nobody wants to overdose on schmaltz (well, some people might) but shunning it entirely requires an impressively sweet touch, or a piling on of the funny. Sadly, a new British entry into the rom-com canon, Hello Carter (2013), fails to do either and is all the more insipid for it. Charlie Cox of Boardwalk Empire fame takes centre stage as the titular (and recently homeless) Carter.
With no roof over his head and no job, Charlie finds himself still mooning over ex-girlfriend, Kelly, who he's not seen in almost a year. Positively passive in almost every way, he stumbles around sharing clumsy small talk with potential employers and relatives before...
