As I get older, I find it harder and harder to find horror movies from the 80s and even 90s to qualify for a recommendation towards a best horror movie you never saw. First is the influx of all these great companies like Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow, and Severin Films, not to mention Kino and Scream Factory, who pull out all the stops finding the most hidden of hidden gems to clean up and release. Second, we have a ludicrous amount of streaming services, and the free ones typically can find these smaller movies that cost way less to license a streamable version. Between my generation recommending everything under the sun to their coworkers, friends, and family as well as newer generations being willing to stream something if its easy to find, the 80s is well represented, for better and for worse. The 2000s are Chock Full of movies that came...

For nearly two decades, festival director Rachel Belofsky and her tireless creative team have nurtured the growth and development of Screamfest Horror Film Festival, providing a platform to celebrate up-and-coming filmmakers while still honoring the genre’s past with vital anniversary screenings and Q&As. Although it may be hard to believe, Screamfest is officially an adult now, as the festival turns the big 18 this year, and when the festival kicks off tonight at Tcl Chinese 6 Theaters on Hollywood Boulevard, guests are in for one hell of a cinematic party.
Daily Dead recently spoke with Belofsky about everything attendees can look forward to at this year’s Screamfest, and as per usual, this year is akin to a plastic pumpkin bowl on Halloween night, one that's brimming with horror-themed treats for all to enjoy.

Last week, I gave you guys a few lists from Amazon and Netflix in regards to what they have to offer via their streaming services this fall. As a newbie to Hulu, I only discovered over the weekend that they, too, beyond just being an amazing resource for television programming, offer up a killer selection of genre movies that are free to stream with a standard Hulu membership.
Here’s a look at an assortment of 31 films from Hulu that I think would be great movies to stream this October. I tried to give you guys a wide variety, too, hitting various sub-genres, so hopefully there’s a little bit of something for everyone in this list.
The Faculty
As far as high school horror films go, The Faculty has remained one of my very favorites for years now. Essentially, it’s Robert Rodriguez riffing on The X-Files, and who can resist that?...

When I first saw Jeremy Saulnier’s Murder Party, I thought for sure that he would soon become a household name. Of course, I thought the same thing about Toby Wilkins after I saw the awesome Splinter, and look how that turned out. Turns out, I’m not much of an entertainment industry speculator. Unfortunately, years and years moved by, and no word about a film in production by Saulnier surfaced. In 2013, if I recall, Heather from Viewer Discretion Advised put together a list of her most anticipated films of 2014. Blue Ruin was featured on this list, and that was honestly the first time I had ever been exposed to the news that it was coming soon. Immediately it jumped to the top of my list as one of my most anticipated titles, and when the film hit VOD a while back, I jumped on it instantly. Blue Ruin is...

Our voyage through history's underappreciated films arrives at the year 2008 - another great year for lesser-seen gems...
For some, 2008 will be memorable as the year of The Dark Knight, with its astonishingly unhinged turn from the late Heath Ledger. Alternatively, it could be remembered as the year a legion Indiana Jones fans left cinemas glum-faced, having sat through Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.
Elsewhere, Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan sang and danced on a Greek island in Mamma Mia!, while Will Smith played an alcoholic superhero in Hancock. But as usual, 2008 offered plenty of watchable movies outside the top 10, which is where we swoop in - like Hancock after a bottle of gin.
So as usual, here's our selection of 25 underappreciated films from the year 2008 - starting with a British horror film starring Michael Fassbender...

Since these appear to be the last two stories from Day 3 of Afm, we're combining them into one. We have Us distro news on Alex Chandon's Inbred and word of a new creature feature from Toby Wilkins.
Per Variety, XLrator Media has acquired all Us rights to Chandon's horror comedy Inbred (review here), starring Jo Hartley, James Doherty, Seamus O'Neill and James Burrows. The film, written by Chandon and Paul Shrimpton, follows four young urban offenders and their care workers as they embark on a community service weekend in the strange, remote Yorkshire village. A minor incident with some local inbred youths rapidly escalates into a nightmare for all involved.
Next, per Bloody Disgusting, Stealth Media is getting behind "Teen Wolf" and Splinter director Toby Wilkins' latest creature feature, Dead Sand, which will star Amber Heard (Machete Kills, Zombieland, and Drive Angry) . The story involves "two humvees [that] tear across a desert.

Splinter helmer Toby Wilkins has been gone far too long from the feature film front. Since directing the 2008 creature feature, he contributed to The Grudge franchise (with part three) and took on a few episodes of Teen Wolf.
He's now attached to Dead Sand, an elevated zombie/war thriller is scheduled to start production in March of 2013. Stealth Media Group is currently handling the title at the American Film Market.
In Dead Sand, a team of badass Special Forces is assigned to capture and transport an escaped terrorist when they’re ambushed by a nest of vicious, tactically advanced zombies.

I must have watched the 1985 Michael J. Fox version of Teen Wolf dozens of times. It was one of those movies I must have asked my mum to video off the telly to watch with my friend Steven when I was about 10 and would just continue to watch until the video tape wore out! I wasn’t too sure how I felt about a TV series of the movie being announced by MTV a while back but then I heard that director of Splinter & The Grudge 3 (and one of our first ever friends on Twitter, Toby Wilkins) would be co-directing so I jumped on board with the idea.
The TV series stars Linden Ashby, Tyler Hoechlin, Crystal Reed, Tyler Posey, Colton Haynes, Holland Roden, Robert Pralgo, Jr Bourne and Sharon Morris.

The wait is finally over. MTV has released the full trailer for its "Teen Wolf" redux, which debuts Sunday night, June 5th, following the 2011 MTV Movie Awards. We know it's tough, but try to contain yourselves.
Synopsis:
Scott (Tyler Posey) was just a regular guy until one bite changed his life forever.
Now he struggles to understand who he is and what he might become. Is he more wolf than human - or is it the other way around? Whichever it is, it's not going to be easy. Scott will try to control his urges, but mostly he's scared that it's his urges that could end up controlling him.
Teen Wolf is the story of Scott as he tries to walk the line between what he wants and what he can't help from wanting. Will the bite end up being a gift? Or will it be a curse? And what...

Toby Wilkins, director of the excellent Splinter and the above-average for a sequel The Grudge 3, has recently blogged and tweeted on the subject of MTV’s forthcoming TV adaptation of one of my favourite movies, TeenWolf. According to Wilkins – who has directed a number of episodes of the forthcoming series – MTV are set to air the first episode of the show on June 5th immediately following this years MTV Movie Awards – one of the biggest broadcasts in the MTV calendar!
Teen Wolf, stars Tyler Posey (“Maid in Manhattan,” “Brothers and Sisters”), as the newly bitten werewolf, ‘Scott McCall,’ Dylan O’Brien as his best friend ‘Stiles,’ Crystal Reed as the mysterious new girl in town, ‘Allison,’ and Tyler Hoechlin (“Road to Perdition,” “7th Heaven”) as the older and possibly quite dangerous werewolf, ‘Derek Hale.’ Always an outsider and often unnoticed, Scott McCall yearns to be recognized in some small...

We’ve not heard anything about the TV remake of classic Michael J. Fox movie, Teen Wolf for quite a while now but MTV (via our friend Toby Wilkins who directed some of the episodes) have just announced the series will air on June 5th in the Us straight after the MTV Movie Awards.
Adam posted the trailer for the series a while ago which you can see here. The TV series stars Linden Ashby, Tyler Hoechlin, Crystal Reed, Tyler Posey, Colton Haynes, Holland Roden, Robert Pralgo, Jr Bourne and Sharon Morris.

Still undecided about whether or not to got see "Morning Glory"? Richard Kelly's micro-review today may help you make up your mind. Some "Glee" cast members made a big splash this week on the Internet and with Doug Benson, thanks to a GQ photo shoot. Other pics of note in the feed showed off meetings between Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron, Seth Green and Jar Jar Binks, and Ludacris with a motorcycle.
Elsewhere, Rose McGowan chastised Omar Doom for his Blu-ray watching choices, while Damon Lindelof assessed Jean-Claude Van Damme's heart attack denial and Rich Sommer backed one of his "Mad Men" co-stars to play Superman. Their tweets all appear after the jump, along with a backstage view of Broken Social Scene.

The end of "Mad Men" Season 4 threw a few viewers for a loop Sunday night. Damon Lindelof attempted to contribute to that confusion, which sounds like it was shared by Elizabeth Banks.

Twitter-Wood was on pins and needles waiting for the Chilean miners to get rescued yesterday (well, Steve Martin and Simon Pegg tried to lighten the mood). Today, the overall mood is significantly cheerier, thanks to a successful extraction operation. The Story: "Heavy Liquid" by Paul Pope (W/A) - DC/Vertigo
What It's About: "S," the hero of this bizarre urban future tale, agrees to hunt down a sculptor who will turn a chunk of the ultra-expensive white material he is addicted to into an exquisite work of art. The mercurial lava he carries brings a cartel of oddly masked thugs after him, though.
It's a conspiracy story filled with chases, creative passion and betrayal that takes him from New York City to Paris with a look somewhere in the overlap among James Bond films, "Trainspotting" and Grant Morrison's "Invisibles."
Why It Works: Pope's use of white space in "Heavy Liquid" found a subtle way to imply horrible, ominous visions, and bringing that same sensation to the big screen would be a great opportunity for a horror-savvy director to create something terrifying with a stylized supporting cast and look...

The 2000's—the decade of iPods, social networking websites and economic hardship—were an interesting decade for horror movies, to say the least. You either loved them, or you downright hated them. From remakes, re-imaginings, reboots, restarts and resets to foreign imports to a resurgence of low-grade schlock, the 2000's were not without gore for fans across the globe....
At the end of the 90s, horror movies were almost non-existent. They were doing nothing new—trying only to steal the fame that Scream harnessed in 1995. Theatres were flooded with neo-Slasher knockoffs, and mediocrity ran amok. If it weren’t for The Blair Witch Project and The Sixth Sense, the 90s would have drowned in a sea of its own plainness. Once the 90s ended and the new millennium began, horror slowly glided on the watered-down plotlines of the should-not-be-classics of I Know What You Did Last Summer and Urban Legend,...

We've been updating the Writers, Directors and Actors on Twitter list that we posted early Monday. New entries include: Toby Wilkins, Leslie Simpson, Courtney Love, Jane Espenson, Jenny Wade, Richard Kelly, Charlyne Yi, Nicholas Jasenovec, Ted Hope, and Derek Mears. Director: Toby Wilkins. Review: Adam Wing Once the curse starts, it can’t be stopped. That’s pretty much how Grudge 3 director Toby Wilkins puts it, which means we can probably expect more additions to the ever-advancing saga that refuses to die. This is of course the third instalment of the American series started by original Ju-on creator Takashi Shimizu back in 2004, there are two more Japanese sequels coming later this year. Do we really need this many calcium deficient dead folk in our living rooms? A young Japanese woman who holds the key to stopping the evil spirit of Kayako travels to the haunted Chicago apartment from the sequel (you remember, don’t you?), to stop the curse of Kayako once and for all and save a family who are currently being haunted by her malicious spirit. Which loosely translates to yet more pale-faced ghost ladies and cute little...

I figured Toby Wilkins would make for a fairly simple Splat Chat discussion, given that he's only directed one feature film (so far), and a pretty good one at that. (It's called Splinter and it's on DVD now) But I didn't take into account the man's vast experience outside the director's chair, his long list of short films, The Grudge 3 (available on DVD today), and his overall adoration for the horror genre. So it actually turned out to be one of the longer Splat Chats yet, it's also one of the coolest. Plus if you're an old-school FEARnet fan, you'll know this guy from the rather cool Devil's Trade series, and it's always nice to revisit an old friend. Scott: Ok, so what were the big...

Toby Wilkins is not happy simply being a director. He’s also a storyteller with a vision. His two latest films, Splinter (review here) and The Grudge 3 (review here), both prove that he’s got a long career ahead of him filedl with engrossing stories he wants to share with audiences.
Wilkins first enjoyed success in the horror genre in 2005 when his short film, Staring at the Sun, won the award for Best Short Film during the Screamfest Film Festival in Los Angeles.
“Because of my success at Screamfest, Ghost House Pictures asked me to film a short film called Mouse Trap for their mobile phone division,” explained Wilkins. “From there, they asked me to do a series of short films for The Grudge 2 which was a blast. Dipping your toes into those waters was a huge joy for me.”
