Ah, the actor’s life. For those who are smitten by the slings and arrows of mostly not outrageous fortune, the choice of a career is inescapable. It’s something they were born to do, something in their blood. Such a person is Lester Rosenthal (stage name Lawrence Rose), played with understated aplomb by Gabriel Byrne in “No Pay, Nudity.” (The unusual title refers to how a casting ad might read in a theater trade paper.) Crisply written by TV producer Ethan Sandler (“New Girl”) and directed by theater veteran Lee Wilkof with an eye for small details and a lifetime of experience,...

I’m not exactly sure what I’m selling here. At first I thought No Pay, Nudity was a documentary about actors. I thought Laurie Metcalf, Nathan Lane, Ted Levine and others were appearing to talk about the positives and negatives of their profession. Then I thought maybe they were at least playing themselves in the movie. After watching the Kickstarter campaign video I don’t know what the finished result will be. It has a scrip by Ethan Sandler (Whitney… wait, don’t go away yet), so it’s fictional. And in addition to the actors already mentioned, the huge ensemble on board includes Lewis Black, Brent Spiner, Jessica Hecht, Austin Pendleton, Boyd Gaines, Mark Blum, Peter Jacobsen and many more whose face you’d recognize before their name. It’s basically a movie full of “that guy” non-stars. But not Curtis Armstrong, apparently, though he does show up in the campaign video. I...

The Bloody-Disgusting Selects flick Yellowbrickroad (yes, all one word) is a story about a group of researchers and filmmakers who go off into the middle of nowhere, Friar New Hampshire to be exact to try and solve a mystery of why the entire population of this town wondered off to this area back in 1940 only to never be heard from again, only about half were found, long dead.
Our group takes to the woods and the deeper they get, the weirder this story gets. Music starts playing and we're in the middle of nowhere New Hampshire people! Our team hears this unsettling music that seems to be from the era our townspeople wondered off. Think old 1940's style of light ballads, maybe. Anyway, our researchers start babbling and talking nonsense as the music plays in the background, some just wonder off almost like they have been hypnotized.

Oh, look! It’s another “people being terrorized by something in the forest” flick! Honestly, the only reason I’m giving this one the time of day is because it’s being distributed by the folks over at Bloody Disgusting, a snazzy genre-related website that I’ve been following for several years now. Otherwise, I’d probably just dismiss this one as yet another everyday low-budget horror flick set in the wilderness. When you’ve seen as many of those films as I have, sometimes it’s hard to drum up genuine excitement about this sort of stuff. In the Fall of 1940, the entire population of Friar, Nh abandoned their homes and walked up an ancient trail, never to be seen alive again. Bloody-Disgusting Selects has released this new theatrical trailer for the indie horror film YellowBrickRoad, which I saw a couple years ago up at the Slamdance Film Festival. I really liked the movie, it had a great 1970’s horror film feel to it. There’s no big special effects or anything like that, this movie relies on messing with the audience's heads and making them think. The directors of the movie even said, the the great films of the 70’s were the inspiration for it. Movies like The Shining, Carrie, The Exorcist, and Deliverance. There was most definitely a great Stephen King style vibe to it that I really liked. You can read my review for it here for anyone interested in the film.
Here's the synopsis:
One Morning in New England, 1940, the entire population of Friar New Hampshire - 572 people - walked together up a winding mountain trail and into the wilderness.

With the summer comes the deluge of big blockbuster franchises that threaten to drown out pretty much anything else that might happen to stumble into theaters. From May to July you can pretty much kiss anything without a huge budget and a franchise goodbye. Sorry romantic comedy lovers. Sorry drama addicts. Good news horror buffs, because if you happen to live near one of a given number of participating AMC Theaters (which you probably do at this point, they're everywhere now), you'll get to enjoy the 4-movie Bloody Disgusting Selects series of films sponsored by Bloody Disgusting, The Collective, and AMC.
The series kicks off on May 4th with Rammbock and carries on through the summer with the other 3 films: Yellowbrickroad, Cold Fish, and Atrocious. Additionally, the French (non-horror) film Le Herisson (aka Hedgehog) will also be showing courtesy of NeoClassics Films.
