In its first season, Prime Video's adaptation of the hugely popular video game series "Fallout" follows several heroes and villains who are still working to understand what's real in their worlds. Walton Goggins' movie star character, Cooper Howard, slowly comes to realize that America is making up an apocalypse to sell back to itself, while Brotherhood of Steel squire Maximus quickly learns that the powerful men he idolized as a kid aren't all they're cracked up to be. It's Ella Purnell's Vault-dweller Lucy, though, who gets the biggest reality check when she leaves her underground dwelling to explore a ruthless world with no place for the chipper sense of entitlement she was taught to convey.
Given the themes of the series, it's fitting that it's just as hard to tell what's real and what's not behind-the-scenes of "Fallout" as it is in front of the camera.

The View Conference will host a virtual talk with the filmmakers behind Pixar’s “Lightyear” on Tuesday, June 28, and has announced the first speakers for its largely in-person event in Turin, Italy, from Oct. 16-21.
The free PreVIEW online event features director Angus MacLane, producer Galyn Susman, animation supervisor David DeVan and simulation and tailoring supervisor Fran Kalal. The third, most recent season of Westworld serves as quite a departure for the HBO series, with the dystopian science fiction drama venturing outside the Wild West-themed android-run amusement park where it is centered and into the futuristic world of Los Angeles circa 2058. Executing the ambitious endeavor required a mind-blowing 3,000 special effects carried out by nine different specialty companies! As visual effects supervisor Jay Worth explained to VFX Voice, “Every inch of every frame is designed. You can’t really point the camera anywhere in the [“Westworld”] world without [visual effects], the art department or costume having to touch it.”
Cast and crew also had to venture quite a bit outside the “Thirty Mile Zone” to create the heavily stylized real-world-ish backdrop of season three, visiting such far-flung locales as San Diego, Singapore and Spain. It’s truly a measure of the pandemic that the 19th annual Ves Awards (to be held virtually on April 6) was dominated by Disney+’s “The Mandalorian” with 13 nominations (topped by photoreal episode). Like the Oscar shortlist, there was an absence of big budget, VFX-intensive studio films. But, truth be told, Season 2 of Jon Favreau’s engaging “Star Wars” bounty hunter series offered the industry’s most innovative tech (wrapped around Industrial Light & Magic’s improved StageCraft virtual production system).

Visual effects producer and supervisor Edward Irastorza, who was known for his work on Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-winning film Pan’s Labyrinth, died on December 21. He was 52.
The news of his death was announced on his Facebook account: “It is with great sadness that I need to let you know that my brother Edward has passed away. Even though he had been very sick for just over a year we were not expecting him to go when he did. He was looking forward to Christmas as Erik was going to be with us. Unfortunately he didn’t make it.”

The season premiere episode answered that immediately, first when she overrode a smart home to get access to its powerful owner, and then again in an expertly choreographed fight sequence that all began with her breaking out of restraints and resisting what would have been a fatal drugging if she had been human. When Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan first introduced their version of “Westworld” on HBO in 2016, they brought to life a world that was inherently more technologically advanced than the real world. At first, that was depicted through the theme parks in the show, populated by actors playing robotic hosts perfectly designed to reflect a real human’s face, body, movements and personality. The implication was always that the larger world outside of the parks had come a long way. But in the third season premiere, the scope of that world was finally shown in earnest.
After the destruction of the theme park at the end of the second season, the characters who survived are now scattered in places including Los Angeles; London; and Beihai, China. Production was equally expansive, taking place in Valencia, Spain, as well as Los Angeles and San Diego.

In its sophomore season, “Westworld” got philosophical about free will and immortality, and the Emmy-nominated VFX got trippy in the finale (“The Passenger”) with some strange environments. The consciousness of all guests got stored in a server center called The Forge, where they were uploaded to host bodies before entering a virtual Eden called The Sublime.
“It’s definitely the biggest thing that I’ve ever done, with 580 plus shots,” said visual effects supervisor Jay Worth. “Aside from shot complexity and pipeline refinements, the volume of shots were so challenging that we used 11 companies [including CoSA Important Looking Pirates, Double Negative, and Pixomondo].”
The first challenge was seamlessly tying together the amusement park’s final destination before entering The Sublime. This was handled by CoSA along with the gateway, which looked like a vertical tear in the horizon.

As television continues to provide portals into fantastic, compelling worlds outside the constraints of space, time and physics, it’s increasingly vital that those imaginative environs — speculative futures ranging from cyberpunk cityscapes to colonizing spacecraft to high-tech A.I. theme parks to an ancient and sprawling fantasy landscape and an insidious dimension encroaching the recent past — be as utterly convincing as possible. Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “The Passenger,” the second season finale of “Westworld.”
When “Westworld” introduced the idea of a “door” to another world for the hosts in the alternate reality theme park, it left a lot of questions dangling about just where that door would lead, what the hosts’ place would be in the world on the other side, and who might be able to escape. The second season finale answered all of those questions definitively — but as series co-creator and co-showrunner Jonathan Nolan points out, the seeds for those answers had been planted from the beginning.
“As Ford and Dolores and Arnold have all observed at various moments in both seasons, humans don’t take very well to rivals,” he tells Variety. “Ford said in the first season that if there were any competitive species to us we f—ed or ate them out of existence.

With astonishing processing power and top-notch teams that know how to create high-end visual effects on a tight budget and timeline, vfx artists routinely turn in shots that thrill TV audiences. But visual effects must also support story and characters in invisible ways. And there’s even resistance to becoming a show known for its effects.
“They didn’t want this to be a vfx-driven show,” says Paul Graff, senior visual-effects producer for Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and a four-time Emmy winner. “They wanted vfx that were about the story, which is one that has things like monsters in it.”

"The Adventures of Tintin" dominated the nominations but it was "Rango" that received the most trophies at the 10th Visual Effects Society (Ves) awards. Stan Lee received the the Lifetime Achievement Award and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull received the George Melies Award. Patton Oswalt hosted the event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The visual effects that we are seeing in movies these days are absolutely mind blowing. At this point it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for a film to have bad visual effects unless the people hired lack talent, or the studio is keeping the cash in their pockets.
There's a lot of good nomination this year such as Captain America, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts? Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts? Before Fringe came along there was an odd-shaped hole in the TV schedule. When Buffy The Vampire Slayer slayed her last (and was ultimately replaced by the vastly inferior, franchise-extending Angel), the supernatural tastes of millions of fans was cast aside, never to be wholly satiated until Jj Abrams – surely the king of TV ideas – brought his X-Files variant to screens in 2008. No more though, as the show has for the past three seasons announces itself as one of the most innovative and entertaining sci-fi shows to have ever graced scenes.

No surprise there. It goes without saying that James Cameron's sci-fi spectacle Avatar has the potential to clean house at the 8th Annual Ves Awards for its breath taking visuals by the acclaimed Weta Digital. Cameron will also be picking up a well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award.
