Michael Keaton recalls the initial reaction that comic book fans had when he was chosen to portray Batman in the 1989 Tim Burton-directed film.
Until then, Batman had been a character on a campy television series. However, Batman would mark a before and after for the superhero movie genre.
“When they said ‘We’re thinking of doing Batman,’ I said, ‘Wait, you’re thinking of making a movie about Batman?’,” Keaton said in an interview with GQ.
He continued, “The fact that Tim said ‘That guy, I want that guy’… the fact that people cared one way or another so much is still baffling. But that was a ballsy move on his part. We also had a nice working relationship from Beetlejuice, so he felt that he and I could get along and would work well together.”

Actor Michael Keaton’s collaboration with director Tim Burton resulted in two live-action Batman movies that are loved and appreciated even today. As a result, it might surprise some fans that the duo butted heads over one casting decision during the production of Batman, which introduced several popular comic book characters.

One of the biggest struggles during the making of the sequel was the casting of Selina Kyle / Catwoman. While Burton cast Michelle Pfeiffer for the role, lead star Keaton earlier did not want the actress anywhere near the sets of the first installment. Nonetheless, Pfeiffer’s performance remains memorable, making viewers curious why Keaton was against her casting.

Actor Michael Keaton has a long list of credits, known for films such as Mr. Mom, Multiplicity, and Beetlejuice. In 1989, he landed the coveted role of Bruce Wayne in Batman.
Now in his seventies, Keaton has worked alongside many incredible A-list actors throughout his 45-year career in Hollywood. However, there he refused to work with one well-known actor due to a previous romantic relationship. Despite Keaton’s resistance, the popular A-lister made it into the Batman franchise.

Known for playing comedic roles, Keaton surprised audiences when he appeared in the 1989 Batman blockbuster film. Directed by Tim Burton, the film took a gothic spin on the classic Caped Crusader tale, redefining the superhero genre.

Last year, we lost Goodfellas star Ray Liotta, who passed away in his sleep at the age of 67. Now Deadline has shared a previously unreleased interview they conducted with Liotta a couple years before he died – and during the interview, Liotta mentioned that he felt stupid for turning down a role in director Tim Burton‘s 1989 version of Batman.
Batman first came up when Liotta was talking about writer/director Noah Baumbach’s Netflix-released film Marriage Story, which he had a role in. He said, “They started with the Batman stuff and triggered the whole comic book genre, and now most of the studios are putting an unbelievable amount of money into things like that. But movies like this one, Marriage Story… Thank God for Netflix, because they’ll finance your movie. I don’t know who else would give money for Marriage Story. It’s a great movie,...

Despite his protestations that he shouldn't be treated "like the Medusa or the Lincoln Memorial," Jack Nicholson exudes exactly that kind of mythical aura. Before he gave up acting around 2010, he was on top of his game for decades, stringing hit movies together since the '60s and watching his star inexorably rise in the process. In the late '80s, with two Academy Awards under his belt, producer Jon Peters asked Nicholson to star as The Joker in Warner Bros. "Batman." The actor was in a position to demand pretty much whatever he wanted in exchange for lending his magnetic persona to Tim Burton's take on the Dark Knight.
Ever the cunning and intelligent thespian, Nicholson had a plan from the start, based on his intuition that "Batman" was going to become a cultural phenomenon -- even before a single scene was shot. As he said in a making-of documentary,...

1989's "Batman" may have defined the modern superhero blockbuster, but it sounds like it was an absolute nightmare to make. Michael Keaton must have been on the verge of a panic attack in his claustrophobic rubber suit, having already been derided as completely wrong for the lead role by so many people prior to the film's release. Meanwhile, production designer Anton Furst had erected a hellish vision of urban decay on the stages of England's famous Pinewood Studios. There, the film's crew would shoot nearly all day for six days a week, meaning they wouldn't see daylight for weeks at a time.
It must have been a truly surreal experience, which likely compounded the woes of director Tim Burton, who was by his own account in the midst of his own nightmare. The then 30-year-old had been given his biggest budget yet to bring DC's premier superhero to the big screen,...

In the DC Extended Universe, it’s not the villains who have identity issues, but the heroes. Bruce Wayne watched his parents get murdered, adopted a teenage sidekick and now spends his nights cosplaying as the creature everyone associates with vampires. Kal-El also saw his parents die and goes through life trying to pass as the earthling Clark Kent, wearing spandex under his work clothes, just in case. These are not the traits of well-adjusted normies, and as such, there’s enormous subversive appeal in seeing trans artist Vera Drew turn such iconic characters inside-out in the illicitly made marvel that is “The People’s Joker.”
Coming from a place of deep fan love and equally profound institutional mistrust, Drew’s anarchic feature-length parody impishly treads the line of fair use, so much so that the helmer pulled the film from the Toronto Film Festival after its raucous Midnight Madness premiere,...

The CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” was a huge deal, as it explored the concept of a DC multiverse for the first time in live-action, connecting various pre-existing franchises together in the process. The Dceu is now set to follow suit with 2022’s The Flash. We already knew that Michael Keaton would be reprising his portrayal of Batman from the Tim Burton movies in the Ezra Miller vehicle, and today, we got official confirmation that Ben Affleck will also be back as Bruce Wayne.
Director Andy Muschietti revealed the bombshell in an interview with Vanity Fair. As for how it’ll feature two separate versions of the Dark Knight, the filmmaker explained that The Flash will open the doors to a “a unified multiverse” that brings together all these different iterations of the same characters.

While fans of Michael Keaton’s Batman are still processing the news that Warner Bros. is looking to ask him to join the Dceu, we’ve now learned that the Arrowverse’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” could’ve featured his return earlier this year.
“Crisis” marked the biggest crossover event in the history of television by cramming in as many DC cameos into the plot as possible. Even the story itself essentially had more than five years of buildup, with the producers relentlessly teasing fans ever since the first episode of The Flash premiered back in 2014. But apart from bringing back the likes of Brandon Routh and Tom Welling in their respective roles as Superman, the five-hour special also included a lot of fresh cameos from different Earths, including one where Kevin Conroy played the Kingdom Come Dark Knight. However, it would seem that The CW originally envisioned Michael Keaton for the role.

DC fans are still reeling from the news that Michael Keaton is in talks to reprise his role as Batman in multiple Dceu movies, beginning with The Flash’s first solo outing in 2022. For many, these reports came completely out of the blue, but the seeds for Keaton’s return to the cape and cowl have actually been sown on the small screen already.
As ScreenRant rightly points out, the Arrowverse paved the way for Tim Burton’s version of the Caped Crusader to make a comeback when it adapted the Crisis on Infinite Earths event. Taking its cues from the comic book storyline of the same name, the epic crossover built bridges between DC’s movies and TV shows by revealing them to be part of the same realm, spread out across multiple Earths.

Earlier today, we got some wild, unexpected news – Michael Keaton is reportedly in talks with Warner Bros. to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne in numerous upcoming DC movies, beginning with The Flash. This would be the first time Keaton has played the Dark Knight since 1992’s Batman Returns and the first major cross-franchise crossover in the Dceu. But it wouldn’t be the first time that Miller’s Flash and Keaton’s Batman have been shown to share continuity.

Although we ended up with a lot of cameos in The CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” there were many that were cut, either for time or due to scheduling conflicts and other reasons. In this context, we missed out on Michael Rosenbaum’s return as Lex Luthor, while it seems other rumors, like Tom Welling appearing in costume, just couldn’t be worked out. One of the more disappointing absences from “Crisis” though was Michael Keaton cameoing as Bruce Wayne, which wasn’t out of the question given some early teases from the production.
According to FandomWire, The CW were keen to bring in Keaton to reprise his role from Tim Burton’s Batman and Batman Returns, even if only for a cameo. “Crisis on Infinite Earths” is currently on a month’s break, but the Arrowverse crossover will return in the new year for its thrilling final two episodes, and we’ve been promised even more surprises to come when it does. And somehow they’re set to be topped by its grand finale.

The CW’s biggest crossover event yet, “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” is going down well with fans. It’s already delivered a ton of cool cameos from across adaptions of DC’s work, with the first few minutes alone bringing us Robert Wuhl’s Alexander Knox reading about Burtonverse Batman stopping Joker, then to DC Universe’s Titans-verse, then Russell Tovey’s The Ray on Earth-x before finally (and best of all) stopping off at Earth-66 where Burt Ward’s Dick Grayson sees the oncoming disaster and yells “Holy crimson skies of death!” On top of that, we’ve revisited Smallville and seen Kevin Conroy play an unexpectedly sinister Bruce Wayne.

Something that marks “Crisis on Infinite Earths” out from practically every other superhero screen crossover we’ve ever seen is how it pulls from across DC history rather than just its own franchise. That’s the reason fans have been even more excited than usual for this year’s Arrowverse event, and yesterday’s first hour did not disappoint on this front. In fact, it began by confirming that three other major DC universes are part of the Arrowverse multiverse.
The Supergirl episode of “Crisis” kicked off with the Monitor’s voiceover describing the origins of the multiverse, before warning that its destruction was at hand. We then visited various different Earths to see them being affected by the deadly wave of anti-matter that’s sweeping through all of reality. Three of the Earths showcased in this sequence include Earth-9, Earth-89 and Earth-66. All of which are familiar to fans.

Crisis on Infinite Earths brought us Robert Wuhl as Alexander Knox on Earth-89, bringing beloved Batman movies into continuity.
The first chapter of Crisis on Infinite Earths introduced a variety of new parallel Earths to the DC Universe. Most Arrowverse action takes place on Earth-1, with a significant portion also taking place on Earth-38 (home of Supergirl). Over the years we’ve been introduced to other Earths including Earth-90, the world where the classic The Flash TV series from the early 1990s took place, and where John Wesley Shipp plays Barry Allen. Crisis on Infinite Earths aims to designate even more of those worlds (probably before destroying them), and part one introduced two Batman-centric ones, the retro-flavored Earth-66, and the somewhat gothic Earth-89.
What is Earth-89?

“Crisis on Infinite Earths” is just days away from kicking off, meaning we’re finally about to experience the biggest Arrowverse event ever assembled. Since fans found out that The CW was tackling the multiversal crossover last year – with a title card at the end of “Elseworlds” confirming it – it’s all they’ve been talking about. We know a lot about “Crisis on Infinite Earths” so far, including many of the stars from across the DC multiverse who will be appearing in the biggest Arrowverse crossover we’ve ever seen. However, if you think you know it all, then you’ve got another thing coming, as Ep Marc Guggenheim has promised fans that there are yet more surprises being added to the event even now.
The Arrow producer was asked by a fan on Twitter if there are “any more appearances that haven’t been leaked yet” in the crossover. Guggenheim replied with an answer that will thrill fans. “Yes,” he confirmed. “We still have a few tricks up our sleeves.” And here’s the really interesting part. “And we’re working everyday on more,” he said.

Eddie Murphy is working the room. Or trying to at least. A New York post-screening party for “Dolermite is My Name” has gathered a lot of famous fans. And they’re kind of mobbing him.
“Eddie is a genius,” marvels legendary casting director Bonnie Timmermann. “I think he’s back. And maybe he never left, but he’s so funny and breathtaking in this film. Once good, always good.” But is he an Oscar contender? “I will definitely vote for him. If I could hand it to him right now I would.”
“It was heartfelt. I think he deserves an Oscar,” says former “Saturday Night Live” impressionist Jay Pharoah. “He was captivating and inspirational.” When I point out that it’s possible “SNL’s” erstwhile Mr. Robinson could be up against Mr. Rogers, Pharoah laughs. “Quite the paradox. I’m waiting to see what Tom Hanks does, I think he’s gonna kill it.

Just when we thought the cast list for “Crisis on Infinite Earths” couldn’t get any better, it’s been reported that Justin Hartley and Robert Wuhl are joining the Arrowverse event. Hartley will be reprising his role as Oliver Queen and the Green Arrow from Smallville, while, even more intriguingly, Wuhl will be returning as Alexander Knox from Tim Burton’s Batman. While we’re still waiting for official confirmation on this from The CW, our sources did previously let us know that Hartley was in talks to appear and now, it seems that our scoop has been confirmed.
For those not in the know, Hartley played the Green Arrow from season 6 of Smallville, teaming up with Tom Welling’s Clark Kent for a proto-Justice League. He was a regular on the show from seasons 8 to 10 as well, playing a key role in Clark’s journey towards becoming Superman.

Never trust a man who says, “Trust me.”
With those sage words of advice, 15 year-old Fannie Belle Fleming leaves her home in the backwoods of West Virginia in 1950 to pursue a career in show business. What happens next is not exactly what the aspiring country singer had in mind.
Blaze (1989 Touchstone/Disney), recently released on Blu-ray by Kino-Lorber, is based upon the true story of the vocalist- turned- stripper who changed her name to Blaze Starr and became scandalously involved with Governor Earl Long of the Great State of Louisiana.
Blaze, played by Lolita Davidovich, is persuaded by sleazy club owner Red Snyder (Robert Wuhl) to try stripping, which he assures her is a form of dancing. “Trust me,” he tells her. After a timid start, Blaze becomes a star on the Burlesque circuit moving from New York to Baltimore and finally landing in New Orleans in...

Robert Wuhl wasn't making a true confession over a plate of eggs benedict and a side of oatmeal at John O'Groats Restaurant. But, yes, since it was brought up, it can now be told: Donald Trump inspired the comedic framework of his HBO show, Arli$$.

Happy 72nd Birthday, Tommy Lee Jones! Though he has played his share of rednecks in films, the Oscar, Golden Globe and SAG Award winner is in real life a top-notch polo player and famously was Vice President Al Gore‘s roommate while both were studying at Harvard. Jones is an actor who is always full of surprises.
Having gotten his start acting in soap operas and independent films, Jones quickly moved up the ladder, earning his first Golden Globe nomination as singer Loretta Lynn‘s husband in “Coal Miner’s Daughter” (opposite Academy Award champ Sissy Spacek). As his work continued to grow, so did Jones’ trophy case. In his film career of over four decades, Jones earned four Oscar nominations three Golden Globe nominations (also including a win for “The Fugitive”) and four Screen Actors Guild nominations (including two SAG trophies for 2007’s “No Country For Old Men” and 2012’s “Lincoln”).

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sent out a call for five-word movie summaries on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon. And thousands of people responded — including “Terminator” star and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Share the plot of your favorite movie in five words.
— The Academy (@TheAcademy) July 31, 2018
It’s a refreshingly off-brand idea from the Academy, being a hell of a lot more succinct than the typical Oscar acceptance speech, and the responses have been pretty fun and often very clever. For instance, Schwarzenegger, who not surprisingly picked the plot of his career-defining hits “The Terminator” and “Terminator 2.”

It’s hard to know much exaggeration is used in movies about crazy Suth’un politics, when some of the serious movies resemble Julius Caesar with mint juleps. This true story is about an old-school populist Louisiana governor who falls for a nationally-known stripper, the famous Blaze Starr, and is told from the stripper’s Pov. Paul Newman is at his late-career best, and Lolita Davidovich lights up the screen. The governor can get away with most anything except what he wants to do most — pass some color-blind laws about hiring and voting.

Ben Affleck recently appeared on HBO's Any Given Wednesday With Bill Simmons, and in addition to going on a very heated rant about "Deflategate," the actor opened up about the effect his ill-fated relationship with Jennifer Lopez had on his career in the early 2000s. "If you went by what people said . . . I wasn't cool and I wasn't talented," he said. "I was, like, the lowest rung of cool and talented that you could possibly be in the public consciousness at that time. I had broken up with Jennifer Lopez and I had, like, three or four movies in a row that had bombed." By 2004, Ben and Jen had ended their engagement after two years of dating and two of Ben's movies were box-office bombs (Gigli and Jersey Girl), but the tabloid phenomenon of "Bennifer" lived on for a while, which Ben claims turned his life into a joke. "So...

In the midst of March Madness and with the Kentucky Derby around the corner, the first pitch of baseball season is almost here.

It was August 11, 2014. The theater was full with an advance screening of The Giver starring Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep. The red carpet event was live-streamed prior to the showing as stars from the film flooded in and entered the New York City party while we, in Knoxville, Tenn., gazed at the screen.
I checked my phone for the time and came across a message on the screen.
“Actor Robin Williams found dead at his home. He was 63.”
A friend put it best when he said that hearing the news of Williams’s passing surprised him with grief.
It did the same for me.
Now, to this point, Robin Williams was just another face (or voice) on the screen to me. An actor who had given life to Genie in Aladdin, the main character of Flubber, and was Mrs. Doubtfire. Nothing of note, but fun most of the time.

Happy Batman Day, everyone! Around the world, May 1st may mark a spring holiday, but here, it marks the first appearance of the Dark Knight, in Detective Comics No. 27, in 1939.
For the past 76 years, the Caped Crusader has been fighting Gotham City evildoers in comic books, movies, TV shows, and pretty much anywhere else you can shine a Bat-signal. Throughout the years, Bruce Wayne's alter ego has gone through many incarnations, not just in actors (from Adam West to Michael Keaton to Christian Bale to Ben Affleck, among the many), but also in character, from haunted avenger to squeaky-clean do-gooder to campy clown to kinky prowler to world-weary fighter. He's due for yet another change this week, with the releases of DC's Batman No. 40 -- in which Bruce Wayne and the Joker finally kill each other (or do they?) and a special issue of DC's Divergence, where an undisclosed character...

When Ben Affleck shows up in "Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice" as the Caped Crusader, it will be nothing short of an event. But 25 years ago, it was just as a big deal — if not more — when Tim Burton's "Batman" was gearing up to hit the big screen. Back then, the director's take on the comic book was seen as "dark" (at least compared to the campier incarnations) and the world was waiting to see Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson tangle. But how was the movie put together? Well, this vintage documentary will help. Running 25 minutes long — and still unavailable on home video — this UK production is hosted by Robert Wuhl (who plays Alexander Knox in the film), and features Burton, designer Anton Furst, Michael Keaton, Kim Basinger, producer Jon Peters, Bob Kane, and more talking about the making of the movie. Everything, the from power of the...

The death of Robin Williams has been publicised massively over the last number of days, a shocking loss to the film industry, Williams was a beloved performer who had many fans, and so obviously there has been an outpouring of emotion since he passed away. I was a fan of Robin Williams and as a fan I have my favourites in terms of his library of films and television, the top of the heap being the 1987 comedy-drama, Good Morning, Vietnam, which I will be reviewing here, in both a tribute to the man himself, but also as a way to talk about one of my personal favourite comedy drama films and one I revisit every year or two and always enjoy.

Tim Burton's Batman was released 25 years ago. Ryan looks back at how it overcame a media backlash to become a defining 80s blockbuster...
Feature
There may have been a point, in late 1988, where Tim Burton began to wonder whether he'd bitten off more than he could chew.
Sure, the 30-year-old director had made feature films before - namely Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and Beetlejuice - but those films were relatively low-budget. Small-scale. Made outside the glare of public and Hollywood studio scrutiny.
Batman, on the other hand, was being put together with a blinding media spotlight trained on it. Warner Bros had set aside somewhere around $30m to adapt DC Comics' beloved Caped Crusader for the silver screen, and both journalists and fans were following every step of its production with keen interest.
Most worryingly, as production on Batman got underway in October 1988, a vocal proportion of those fans were decidedly unhappy.

Last week, New York City arthouse theater Brooklyn Heights Cinema was in danger of going out of business if it didn’t raise $30,000 to purchase a digital projection system. With just hours to go before hitting an Indiegogo deadline, the theater had raised about $26,500 toward its $30,000 goal. An extension from Indiegogo gave the cinema an extra week to reach its target, and early Tuesday, the theater ended its fundraising campaign with more than $32,500 raised. Brooklyn Heights Cinema owner Kenn Lowy estimated that without digital projection, the theater would have been forced to close its doors in a matter of weeks. "Memorial Day season is really only six weeks away," Lowy said. "I don't think we would have made it that far." As an added bonus, Lowy received an additional $5,000 check from Donna and Evan Wuhl – brother of the actor Robert Wuhl – separate from the Indiegogo campaign. With the extra money,...

You might not think those who can hit, kick or shoot can also slice, dice or saute, but the opening episode of "Chopped Tournament of Stars," a five-part special edition of Food Network's "Chopped," might convince you otherwise.
Premiering Sunday, March 9, it brings together celebrities from different walks of life to compete head to head in cooking challenges. The winners from the first four episodes face off for the championship in the finale on April 6, with a $50,000 grand prize going to the charity of the victor's choice.
The premiere episode "Sports Stars!" pits four ex-athletes -- 1999 World Cup heroine Brandi Chastain, NBA enforcer Charles Oakley, and Olympic gold medalists Greg Louganis and Jackie Joyner-Kersee -- in various challenges.
Alex Guarnaschelli, who is a judge on the episode with Marc Murphy and Geoffrey Zakarian, was impressed but not surprised by the athletes' skills.

How do capes, cowls and cultural context intertwine in some of history’s more troublesome Batman movies?
Once upon a time on this site, we looked at Batman’s ability to offer social commentary to different cultural contexts; you can find that piece here. Through analysing the 1943 Batman serial, the 1960s Adam West TV show and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, we saw how the caped crusader had repeatedly held a mirror to his surrounding contextual issues.
In the 40s, the Bat was a government agent enlisted to bring down a newly-made Japanese villain. In the 60s, inspired by Warhol and Lichtenstein, he became a Pop Art icon, actually superseding the popularity of the comics and securing the character’s future. In The Dark Knight Christian Bale’s incarnation went to questionable lengths to bring down an unstoppable terrorist, reflecting the political scandals of the modern age.

It said something about HBO’s elevating stature as a programmer that the company strategy was no longer catch-as-catch-can. HBO now found itself in the enviable position of being able to afford to turn shows down based on its view the project was – in the phrase I was coming to hear more and more often – “an HBO show.” Like the old joke about art, nobody could define what that meant, but they knew it when they saw it.
Case in point:
In 1996, HBO rolled out Arli$$ (1996-2002). Like The Larry Sanders Show, Arli$$ came from the off-kilter imagination of a stand-up comic, in this case Robert Wuhl, who also starred. In synopsis – and no doubt why HBO was interested – Arli$$ sounded like a sports version of The Larry Sanders Show. Wuhl played Arliss Michaels, a top-flight sports agent with the integrity of a hired killer moving through the circles of...
