Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights to Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill, a documentary about the gifted singer-songwriter who was equal parts talented and tortured.
The film directed by Andy Brown and Brian Lindstrom (Alien Boy: The Life & Death of James Chasse) premiered at Doc NYC in 2022. Greenwich plans to release Lost Angel in theaters on April 12. Watch the trailer below.
“An intimate portrait of a one-of-a-kind singer-songwriter from 1970s Los Angeles, the documentary charts the life of Judee Sill from a troubled adolescence that included armed robbery and prison through her meteoric rise in the music world and tragic early death,” notes a description of the documentary. “In just over two years, Judee went from living in a car to a deal with Asylum Records and the cover of Rolling Stone. Director Denny Tedesco previously scored a hit among music fans with his 2008 film “The Wrecking Crew,” a documentary about the battalion of 1960s studio musicians whose names were little known even among the cognoscenti, until these unknown soldiers started to quietly get their due decades later. Although it took another 15 years after that film to come to fruition, Tedesco had an easy go-to for an unofficial sequel. “Immediate Family” focuses on a smaller cadre of players that soon came to dominate the L.A. recording scene and who were, for a time, known collectively as the Section. One thing the earlier movie had that this one doesn’t was a sense of injustice corrected, because let’s face it — in the 1970s, everybody knew their names.
Well, let’s not exaggerate — maybe not quite everyone was devoted to fondling LP packaging and devouring it for information, even in the physical media era.

Fantastic Cat make their case as the Harlem Globetrotters of Americana music with a head-spinning, instrument-trading, vocal-swapping rendition of Wings’ “Band on the Run.” The note-perfect but still ramshackle cover arrives on the 50th anniversary of the release of Paul McCartney and Wings’ 1973 album, Band on the Run, and a day after McCartney announced a new anniversary edition of the LP dropping in February.

Around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday night, a shadowy group of figures walked onto the Farm Aid stage at the Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana. This was supposed to be the moment where Wille Nelson wrapped up the night, but there was no sign of the Red Headed Stranger or his band. Instead, another act was plugging in instruments on the darkened stage. There was no announcement of any kind, and the large screens on both sides of the stage went completely blank for the first time all day.

Some classic rock songs were controversial before they were completed. For example, a famous backup singer for The Rolling Stones initially refused to work on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama.” She said a horrific historical event made her turn down the song at first.

Merry Clayton is a backup singer perhaps best known for duetting with Mick Jagger on The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter.” During a 2013 interview with The A.V. “I get off the phone and said, ‘Curtis, why are you telling Clydie that I’m going to be at a session that I do not want to do? You know I’m not going to sing...

David Letterman has made his love for Warren Zevon and The National very clear, declaring that both artists ought to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and that he wishes he “could be Matt Berninger.”
Sitting down for a YouTube conversation with Barbara Gaines and Mary Barclay — longtime colleagues from the Late Show days — the 70-year-old television icon shared some of his thoughts on the 2023 inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, starting with his disappointment over the snubbing of Zevon.
“Warren Zevon was on the ballot for the first time, and was not voted in,” he explained. “I will say that I’m disappointed. I’m not angry, because I would’ve been surprised had it gone the other way. I think to be angry would’ve been 30 years ago, when he should’ve been inducted.” Zevon currently sits at No. 2 on Consequence‘s...

Willie Nelson just got an only slightly late 90th birthday present: an impending induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, reports ‘Variety’. The country music legend was one of seven artistes announced on Wednesday morning as having been voted into the Hall, along with Kate Bush, Rage Against the Machine, Missy Elliott, Sheryl Crow, George Michael and the Spinners, ‘Variety’ adds.
There are six more inductees beyond that list, with the distinction of being selected by a Hall of Fame committee to join the seven performers who were voted in via general balloting.
These are singer Chaka Khan, instrumentalist-producer Al Kooper and lyricist Bernie Taupin, all in the ‘musical excellence’ category; pioneering rock guitarist Link Wray and hip-hop originator DJ Kool Herc in the ‘musical influence’ division; and ‘Soul Train’ TV host Don Cornelius as recipient of the annual Ahmet Ertegun Award, ‘Variety’ adds.

George Michael received the most fan votes among the 2023 nominees for induction to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Support for Michael was anything but a “Careless Whisper” as the late British pop idol garnered 1,040,072 votes from fans who could either vote online once daily or in-person at the official complex in Cleveland. He was followed by Cyndi Lauper, Warren Zevon, Iron Maiden, and Soundgarden, but perhaps more impressively, his competition also included performers like Willie Nelson, Kate Bush, A Tribe Called Quest, Rage Against the Machine, and The White Stripes. According to Ultimate Classic Rock, the “Faith” singer had held the lead since March.
While the fan vote doesn’t ensure induction, all but one of the five fan-vote winners has received been inducted since the public poll began. The five highest vote-getters will be listed together on a single fan ballot that gets tallied with the ballots from official voting members.

In an op-ed in the Guardian, titled, “Why Are Women So Marginalised by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame,” rock singer and guitarist Courtney Love criticized the organization’s nomination process for excluding women and black artists.
“The nominations for this year’s class, announced last month, offered the annual reminder of just how extraordinary a woman must be to make it into the ol’ boys club,” she wrote.

Although there are a record number of women nominees this year, Love cited Kate Bush as a specific example, noting that she did not make the ballot until 2018 even though she was eligible for nomination since 2004.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame took more than 30 years to induct Nina Simone and Carole King. She said that this trend could be partly explained by the fact that “of the 31 people on the nominating board, just nine are women.

David Lindley, the dexterous and elfin multi-instrumentalist who died yesterday at the age of 78, could delight in sharing a few tales about his days on the road with Jackson Browne, James Taylor, and the other leading troubadours and songwriters he backed during the Seventies and Eighties. There was the time, he told me in 2013, that he saw one of them talking up a backstage female visitor. Notable session musician David Lindley, a multi-instrumentalist known for his prolific work and collaborations throughout the Seventies and Eighties, has died at age 78, Rolling Stone confirmed. No cause of death was given.
An active musician since the Sixties, Lindley was a popular session musician whose skillset when it came to playing string instruments like the fiddle and guitar made him a must-have collaborator for artists like Jackson Browne, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Toto, Rod Stewart, and Joe Walsh.
“The loss of David Lindley is a huge one,” singer Jason Isbell wrote on Twitter.

Bob Dylan has been a successful musician for decades. He rose to fame in the early 1960s and has won multiple Grammys and even a Nobel Prize. His songwriting talent helped him on his rise to fame, but he said he has had to maintain a specific type of personality too. In order to be successful, Dylan said he had to be reclusive and unfriendly.

Nashville singer-songwriter Margo Price has spent the past half-dozen years showing she’s much more than a country artist. In 2016, she debuted with Midwest Farmer’s Daughter, a showcase of throwback honky-tonk and hard-edged drinking songs. The album helped crystallize and capture a rising demand for those throwback Nashville styles at the time, playing a fundamental role in their ongoing resurgence from stars like Chris Stapleton and Tyler Childers.

At age 43, Shooter Jennings has called Los Angeles home for over half of his life. The City of Angels remains an endless well of unique, once-in-a-lifetime characters — whether glorious or depraved, righteous or demonic — for the Grammy-winning producer. And it’s those figures that inspire Jennings’ creativity, both onstage and in the studio. He can be alternately fueled by the literary madness of Charles Bukowski and the musical explorations of Warren Zevon, two characters who represent the many layers of L.A. to Jennings.

When Shooter Jennings saw his friend Brandi Carlile put together a tribute set to Joni Mitchell at this year’s Newport Folk Festival, it got the Grammy-winning producer thinking about, perhaps, organizing a similar project of his own.

I don’t have a [new] record,” Jennings tells Rolling Stone backstage at the inaugural Rebels & Renegades festival, held this weekend in Monterey, California. “So I was trying to think of something to do,...

Smith’s 1995 film Mallrats wasn’t a box office success, but that hasn’t stopped talk of a sequel coming up here and there over the years – whether it would be a “Die Hard in a Mall” scenario, a limited series, or something completely different. The problem is that Mallrats is a Universal property, so Smith can’t do anything with it unless the studio is on board.

Pearl Jam were about halfway through their special concert for SirusXM at Harlem’s Apollo Theater on Saturday night when Eddie Vedder’s mind went to Bessie Smith’s residency at the venue way back in 1935. “She played here four weeks in a row at one point,” he told the audience. “She was the singer, so she was probably standing right where I’m standing. From Warren Zevon and David Bowie to Gregg Allman and Pop Smoke and Mac Miller, posthumous albums recorded during an artist’s final months have become a sadly inevitable part of the pop landscape. That’s also the case with Things Happen That Way, the album Dr. John was working on when he died of a heart attack in June 2019. Now, three years after his passing, the album, which includes covers as well as some of his last newly written songs, will finally be heard when Rounder Records releases it on Sept.

The Go-Go’s, Foo Fighters, Tina Turner and Jay-Z are among the 16 artists now eligible for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the 2021 ceremony. The complete list was released on Wednesday. Voters will decide the inductees in May for a ceremony to be held this autumn.
An artist first becomes eligible 25 years after a recording is released. Many of this year’s contenders have been eligible far longer than that: Kate Bush, Devo, The Go-Go’s, Iron Maiden, Chaka Khan, Carole King (already inducted as a writer), LL Cool J, New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, Todd Rundgren, Tina Turner (already inducted with Ike and Tina Turner group) and Dionne Warwick. First-timers on the ballot also include Mary J. Blige and Fela Kuti.
We asked you in a recent poll which overlooked band was your top choice to finally be inducted. The Go-Go’s won that poll.

Last March, Ben Nichols found himself in the same predicament as every other working musician: at home with an unusual amount of time on his hands. Fortunately, the singer and principal songwriter of the venerated Memphis band Lucero had just wrapped several weeks of touring in January and February, giving him and the group a financial cushion.
“We would have been in a drastically worse spot if we would’ve taken the winter off and were planning on starting a tour in March,” Nichols says on a call with Rolling Stone.
