Amidst her triumphant Oscar win for the 2022 film Everything Everywhere All at Once, Michelle Yeoh finds herself grappling with a sobering reality in the entertainment industry, as her show The Brothers Sun becomes the latest casualty in the streaming giant’s ruthless series of cancellations. The action comedy-drama, released earlier this year, has failed to secure a second season at the streamer, despite critical praise and Yeoh’s standout performance.

This is why we can’t have nice things. Disney+ announced today that it will not move forward with a second season of the action-fantasy series American Born Chinese. The decision to cancel the series comes seven months after Disney debuted the eight-episode series on its streaming service, Disney+. The cancelation is raising a red flag for fans of the series, as Disney tends to purge content from Disney+ to save money and digital real estate. We’ve seen the mouse-eared streamer purge content before, with shows like Willow, Turner & Hooch, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and more. According to Deadline, options on the cast expired yesterday. However, there could be a silver lining to this disappointing news. 20th Television still plans to shop the series to other outlets, giving the show a chance to live again through another platform.

Disney+ is not proceeding with a second season of Disney Branded Television/20th Television’s action fantasy series American Born Chinese, which stars Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh.
The decision comes more than seven months after the eight-episode first season was released May 24. It also comes after the options on the cast expired yesterday, I hear. 20th Television still plans to shop the series elsewhere.
Created by Kelvin Yu based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel, American Born Chinese had an impeccable timing, launching on the heels of the 2023 awards season that saw Yeoh and Quan win trophy after trophy for their movie Everything Everywhere All at Once, culminating with both of them landing Oscars in March.

On May 24, 2023, Disney+ released “American Born Chinese,” which quickly amassed a score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and a critics’ consensus that reads, “Jam-packed with inventive flourishes and grounded by lovable actors, ‘American Born Chinese’ musters epic elements from Chinese mythology to tell a deeply relatable coming of age story.”
The series reunites “Everything Everywhere All At Once” Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan to tell the story of Jin Wang (Ben Wang), an average teenager balancing high school and home life. When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle with Chinese mythological gods. The Everything Everywhere All At Once reunion we definitely knew we needed comes in the unexpected form of a coming-of-age series on Disney+ with two teenagers that steal the show and draw us into the world of the Jade Empire, but also simply into the life of a young boy who’s finding himself. I know it sounds slightly cringy; on the contrary, the show is self-aware, funny, and highly entertaining. As someone who hasn’t read the legendary graphic novel the show is based on, I’m intrigued enough to stop writing this review and spend my weekend binge-reading the source material. American Born Chinese, or “ABC,” tells the story of a “regular guy,” Jin Wang, as he falls into a swirl of celestial civil war while simultaneously going through puberty (ouch). If Beef was A24’s answer for impeccable representation, Disney+ approaches the subject with a family-viewing experience...

Chinese folklore gets a Disney spin in “American Born Chinese,” an eight-episode series created by Kelvin Yu, which landed on Disney+ on Wednesday. An adaptation of the 2006 graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, the series centers on Bay Area teenager Jin Wang (Ben Wang), who becomes entangled in a fantastical quest after a new classmate, Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu), reveals himself to be the son of the Monkey King and recruits Jin to help him search for the Fourth Scroll.
Featuring an all-star cast that includes Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, Chin Han, Yann Yann Yeo and Sydney Taylor, “American Born Chinese” recontextualizes ancient history for modern audiences both familiar and unfamiliar with the original stories, bringing together the talents of some of the most prominent Asian actors, writers and directors in entertainment.

It’s hard to pin down the identity of “American Born Chinese,” the new live action adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s acclaimed graphic novel of the same name from creator Kelvin Yu. Is it a fantasy epic of warring ancient gods? A modern-day high school romp about a second generation Chinese American teenager trying desperately to fit in? A tender examination of multigenerational trauma and the scars that can unwittingly be passed on from parents to children?
The answer is all of the above and, as you may expect, it comes with mixed results. At its best, “American Born Chinese” is a delightful and refreshing exploration of diasporic identity, a thrilling martial arts fantasy and a heartwarming tale of family and friendship. However, the series’ disparate storytelling styles don’t often blend as seamlessly as we might like, making the whole show just a bit less effective than the sum of its parts.

A popular reading of superhero mania holds that it’s our era’s substitute for shared mythology; instead of Zeus shooting lightning bolts from Mount Olympus, we have Cyclops shooting beams from his eyeballs. So it’s fitting that the coming-of-age tale “American Born Chinese” streams on Disney+, the service that’s a one-stop shop for all things Marvel; Destin Daniel Cretton of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” the first Marvel film to star an Asian American hero, even directs the pilot. But “American Born Chinese” flips the script: rather than use superheroes for modern-day mythmaking, it infuses centuries-old myths into genres now dominated by superheroes.

When Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel American Born Chinese came out in 2006, it was a gamechanger. Yang has built his career on Asian-inclusive comics and American Born Chinese has been his most influential to date. It earned several comic book awards when it came out, and is still taught in schools today, complete with a study guide in Gale’s acclaimed Novels for Students series.
The slang “American born Chinese” is commonly reduced to the acronym “ABC” within Chinese communities. When used by certain Chinese, it can be slightly derogatory, implying that the ABC has lost the connection to Chinese culture. Yang’s graphic novel grapples with Amerasian issues in a coming-of-age story that has now been adapted into an eight-episode series for Disney+. While there are distinct references to the Asian American experience, the story embraces outsider themes that anyone can relate to.

For some, “American Born Chinese” is a derogatory reference to Chinese Americans who were born in the U.S. It’s a term used to connote hierarchy in Chinese immigrant households and dismiss the connection that first or second generation children have to their Chinese roots and culture. But in the new Disney+ series American Born Chinese, based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel of the same name, the term takes on a different meaning. For teenage protagonist Jin Wang (Ben Wang), it suggests that, despite his being born in the United States, his peers will always see him as “other.” No matter how hard he tries to assimilate, to be American, he’ll always be seen as Chinese.

When Everything Everywhere All At Once burst into the multiverse, it rocked our cinematic world like never before. Not only did Michelle Yeoh become the first Asian woman to win Best Actress at the Academy Awards, Eeaao captured six other Oscars including Best Picture, and both Best Supporting Actor and Actress. Beyond that, Eeaao collectively earned over 300 honors and nominations from film festivals all over the world.
Hot on heels of the Eeaao victory lap, Disney+ announced the debut of American Born Chinese, a miniseries based on a celebrated graphic novel created by Gene Luen Yang in 2006. Yang is an executive producer of this television adaptation. The end of May traditionally also means that fall TV shows are gearing up to end their season finales. But that tradition hails from a time when TV seasons were nearly 30 episodes in length, and spanned from their premieres in early September all the way through late spring.
Streaming has changed essentially everything about that schedule. Although new TV shows are still traditionally released in the fall, streaming has no set calendar, and new titles release whenever studio executives see a lull in their calendar. Coincidentally, there are a couple of big-name streaming shows that will air their season (and series) finales this week, even though their premiere episodes aired not last September, but earlier this spring. Check them out below, along with all the other fantastic titles coming to streaming this week!

The journey for Jin Wang in “American Born Chinese” couldn’t have begun at a more opportune time. The protagonist of Gene Luen Yang’s 2006 graphic novel — now a Disney’s eight-episode series from showrunner Kelvin Yu — springs forth when narratives with an Asian identity are stratospheric-high in demand and popularity. Even with the silhouette of a high schooler that folks might take for granted, Jin is living in a world where he is outlined with the community’s glow, one generated by the golden reception for “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Furie,” “Ms.

In recent years, films and television shows have been tasked with the mission of depicting under-represented groups on screen while passing a simple litmus test: Who is this for? For American Born Chinese, it’s immediately apparent that the answer is everyone. The show’s characters speak Mandarin about 30 percent of the time, and signs of Asian-Americana are littered throughout. Yet despite its cultural specificities, this adaptation of Gene Luen Yang’s 2006 graphic novel of the same name is an obvious play for Disney’s general audience, what with its comic storyline mixed with fantasy and martial arts.
The series begins with Jin Wang (Ben Wang), a teen struggling to find his social footing, being tasked with showing Chinese transfer student Wei-chen (Jim Liu) around school. Ever since its original publication in 2006, the acclaimed graphic novel "American Born Chinese" by author Gene Luen Yang has always felt ripe for a live-action adaptation. Divided up into three initially unconnected stories, the story manages to balance mythical and possibly supernatural tales involving Chinese deities with the otherwise grounded and all-too-relatable struggles of two Chinese students — one American-born, the other recently emigrated from China — attempting to assimilate and fit in among the daunting environment of high school. How these disparate threads manage to intersect in the end is well worth reading to find out.

What do you get when you take the incredible cast of Everything Everywhere All At Once, team them up with Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton as a mythical goddess, and an allegorical journey of identity and acceptance.
The story here centres on Jin Wang (played by Ben Wang) – a teenager who’s awkwardly prompted to look after Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu), a Chinese exchange student who arrives at his school. But, there’s more to Wei-Chen than meets the eye, and soon all kinds of hell breaks loose – with our world colliding against Chinese folklore, and the kids dispatched to set everything right. Cue martial arts face-offs, wire-fu action, and mythical entities entering the story.
There’s an astonishing cast for this one – not only is it reuniting Everything Everywhere stars Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, starting from 24 May.

"I need your help with my quest to stop the uprising." Disney+ has debuted the full official trailer for the action comedy series titled American Born Chinese, launching in May for streaming on Disney+. The fantasy series stars Ben Wang as Jin Wang, including an epic cast: Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Daniel Wu, Jim Liu, Sydney Taylor, Poppy Liu, Rosalie Chiang, James Hong, + Stephanie Hsu in a guest role. They're really hoping to borrow all that buzz from Everything Everywhere All at Once...

Put your hot dog-fingered hands together and scream because Stephanie Hsu is joining the cast of David Leitch’s The Fall Guy. Hsu’s star is burning brightly after starring as Michelle Yeoh’s daughter in Everything Everywhere All At Once, which in my opinion, is one of the greatest films of 2022. Hsu shines in the bizarre fantasy-action film, and now she joins Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson for Leitch’s reimagining of the 1980s adventure television series.
When The Fall Guy came to television screens, the show starred Lee Majors as a stuntman moonlighting as a bounty hunter. In Leitch’s version, written by Drew Pearce, an out-to-pasture stuntman (Gosling) finds himself back on a movie set with the star he used to double that replaced him. However, the star is missing, providing the stuntman with a unique opportunity.

A film about an infection and the upset, paranoia, and unease that follows is, well, tailor-made for right now. There is no better time, then, to see director Jin Wang’s The Best Is Yet to Come, a selection at both the 2020 Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. It is a complex study of the illegal blood trade that helped hepatitis B carriers circumvent the discrimination they faced when seeking jobs and applying for school in early-2000s Beijing. While there is not a direct correlation to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is impossible not to make connections between both the story itself and even its creation. As Wang explains in the film’s press notes, “Due to the pandemic, post-production took place online. The editor and I were 1300km apart. Distance sparks reflection.”
