The classic children’s book by Margery Williams gets a new take just in time for the holidays on Apple TV+, and TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek of The Velveteen Rabbit ahead of its November 22 premiere. “Wise Horse, what does real mean? Does it mean having bits of you that move about?” the Velveteen Rabbit (voiced by Alex Lawther) asks. “Don’t listen to the others, Rabbit,” Wise Horse (voiced by Helena Bonham Carter) says. “Being real isn’t about how you are put together. It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but really loves you, then you become real. That’s part of the magic of make-believe.” The Rabbit then asks if it hurts. Watch the full sneak peek above for Wise Horse’s answer — and why it’s worth it.

The number 4 typically doesn’t bode well for film franchises, which understandably has quite a few “Toy Story” fans feeling nervous. When it comes to constructing dramatic arcs across multiple movies, trilogies seem to offer a natural cycle, after which creatives must decide whether to reinvent or carry on toward Episodes 5, 6 and 7, hoping not to derail things in the process (à la “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” and “Jaws: The Revenge”).
Those are the stakes facing “Toy Story 4,” but this is Pixar we’re talking about — a place where followups level up — and this series’ quaternary installment adds so much that audiences will find it hard to imagine the saga without it. After all, Pixar is the kind of studio that so believes in doing right by its properties, it scrapped Disney’s slapdash direct-to-video plans for “Toy Story 2” in order to make a theatrical sequel that surpassed the original.

The classic children’s tale The Velveteen Rabbit is getting a new TV adaptation that will feature a mix of live-action and animation.
The series is being developed by Tom Bidwell, who recently worked on the series adaptation of Watership Down for BBC and Netflix. He’s also teamed up with Magic Light Pictures, who has worked on animated specials that include adaptations of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes and several of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s books, including The Gruffalo, Stick Man, and Zog.
The Velveteen Rabbit was written by Margery Williams , and the classic 1922 story centers on a boy and his beloved toy rabbit.
At first a brand-new toy, now a threadbare and discarded nursery relic, the velveteen rabbit is saved from peril by a magic fairy who whisks him away to the idyllic world of Rabbitland. There, he becomes "Real," a cherished childhood companion who will be loved for eternity.

It seems Drew Barrymore loves a good bargain. The Blended star, who has spent a large part of the summer on the island of Nantucket with her husband Will Kopelman and two daughters, Olive and Frankie, headed to the Hospital Thrift Shop, which benefits the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, this week. Dressed casually in a striped T-shirt, jeans and a ponytail, Barrymore browsed the racks and decided to leave with one very special item: a copy of The Velveteen Rabbit, by Margery Williams. While summer is prime celebrity sighting time on the island, the locals have a special appreciation for Barrymore.

The best way to spread holiday cheer, Will Ferrell instructed us in the 2003 movie Elf, is singing loud for all to hear. And what better place to sing than on Broadway? Now the stage musical version of Elf is back on Broadway after a one-year hiatus. And it’s joined by a new stage version of the 1983 yuletide movie fave A Christmas Story (pictured above) — that naturally features a leg-lamp kickline and a tap-dancing fantasy number called “You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out.” Both shows opened this week for limited runs, and here are excerpts of our reviews (as well...

A soul-searching fortysomething in the aftermath of divorce – Ethan Hawke's latest role is almost too close to home. There's no big career plan: he just follows his heart
'I think that something really good can come from trying to exorcise some of your own personal demons in your work," says Ethan Hawke, sipping from a steaming bowl of pumpkin soup. We are sitting in the window of a cafe just around the corner from Hawke's apartment in Chelsea, New York, talking about his new film, The Woman in the Fifth, a small French-British co-production, directed by Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski. Hawke plays an American writer in Paris, newly divorced, seeking custody of his daughter, who is drawn into a phantasmal relationship with a beautiful muse (Kristin Scott Thomas). The character seems like a napkin sketch of Hawke himself.

Eb White's classic is a fine example of literature helping children deal with death. So why couldn't I use it in my new play?
There's a heart-wrenching scene in Eb White's much-loved book, Charlotte's Web, where Charlotte (a spider) tells Wilbur (a pig) that she's going to die. I wish I could quote it. But, after having the fear of God struck into me by the American lawyers who control the rights to the book, I daren't even paraphrase it.
When I started writing my new play, Notes to Future Self, I had no idea what a sticky, tangled web I'd find myself in.
The play was a commission by Birmingham Rep which would, under the auspices of the Barry Jackson Trust, tour schools and community centres as well as theatres. I knew from the start that I wanted to try to write something similar to the books and films I'd loved when growing up.

With all eyes on the upcoming Academy Awards (not to mention the Spirit Awards, the afternoon before), it's a relatively quiet week at the box office. There are some bubblegum high school antics, a couple of documentaries about the dysfunctional, a children's literary classic and a somber drama set during WWII.
