Exclusive: Deadliest Catch and Ice Road Truckers creator Thom Beers is planting his latest seed in TV ground with a reality series about CBD.
Beers is producing Kings of Kush for Vice TV.
The series, which launches on the cable network on March 2, follows Anthony “Sully” Sullivan, a celebrity TV pitchman best known as the OxiClean guy, as he launches a new hemp farming venture.
Sully took a departure from his 30-year career in selling products on TV when his daughter was born with a rare genetic disorder and needed an alternative to prescription medication. After witnessing the benefits of CBD, he started a 116-acre organic hemp farm and enlisted his friend and TV adventure racer Dave Christian to help, although neither of them knew anything about farming.
Despite this, they built Montkush Farms in Vermont and let Beers, who founded Original Productions and previously ran FremantleMedia North America, and his team film it.

Producer Eric Schotz was getting a haircut on the morning of June 30, 2016, when his life changed.
Schotz was sitting in the barber’s chair when he got an urgent call from his son Andrew, who works at Lmno, the independent production company that Schotz headed for nearly 30 years. The FBI had arrived at the company’s Encino offices with a search warrant seeking documents in connection with an alleged embezzlement scandal that Lmno said it discovered about six months earlier involving its longtime accountant.
The raid marked a sharp escalation of a two-pronged legal battle that Schotz, 62, waged from 2016 to early 2018, with parallel lawsuits filed against the company’s former accountant, Paul Ikegami, and Discovery Communications, one of the industry’s largest buyers of unscripted programming from independent banners such as Lmno.
Discovery countersued and accused Lmno of defrauding the company through its production budgets and of keeping two sets of books.

One year ago, Gold Rush star Todd Hoffman tipped Monsters and Critics to a potential new show he was working on with his producing partner to pitch to Discovery and other networks including Netflix and Amazon. The premise of his show, as the former Gold Rush star revealed in our exclusive interview last October, was to see complete greenhorns (everyday amateur people) competing as miners to recover gold. Now the show’s development has been confirmed, with Deadline revealing that Hoffman and his Züm Media partner Jose Behar have signed a deal with Ice Road Truckers super producer Thom Beers and Jeff Conroy, […]

Gold Rush creator and star Todd Hoffman has partnered with Bering Sea Gold executive producers Thom Beers and Jeff Conroy on another series set in the world of amateur gold mining, this time in the competition reality space.
Hoffman and Jose Behar’s Züm Media has signed a development deal with Beers and Conroy’s new multi-platform production company BoBCat Studios to create the show.
Tentatively titled Greenhorn Gold, the series will feature a cast of men and women from all walks of life as novice miners attempting to dig for gold in a blue collar, competition-style reality show. After a massive tryout, the greenhorn miners will be eliminated one-by one until only six remain at the end of the season. Those six will walk away with life-changing money in raw gold to take home to their families.

Tough film, I really liked it and it struck me personally. Roll with Me, which screened at the recent Slamdance Film Festival, is a feature docu that centers on Gabriel Cordell, who, in 1992, was involved in a traffic accident that left him without the use of his legs.
After a drug-fueled, self-destructive spiral that lasted for years, the one-time aspiring actor sobered up at the age of 42. Needing a goal to strive for, he decided to make history as the first person to roll across the United States in a plain wheelchair.
Director Lisa France and the members of her small production team introduce themselves to viewers and almost immediately reveal that each has specific medical, psychological, and emotional issues.
This film really cuts to the core of so many issues that it’s hard not to take personally. I did.

In its plans to stage a war between the old gods and the new – one unrelated to the population of Westeros, mind you – Starz has rounded up a truly star-studded lineup of talent in bringing American Gods to the small-screen.
That’s hardly surprising, really, considering that Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name is brimming with complex deities that in turn offer up meaty roles for those actors on board. In recent weeks, we’ve caught wind of Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) Cloris Leachman, Peter Stormare and Orange is the New Black star Pablo Schreiber closing deals to star, and now, Deadline is reporting that Argo‘s Omid Abtahi is the latest to join the straight-to-series adaptation.
Abtahi will play Salim, a “sweet, sad, and put-upon foreigner who is one half of a pair of star-crossed lovers.” Behind the camera, Bryan Fuller and Michael Green are the creative pair offering a seralized spin on American Gods, flanked by a team of producers that includes Craig Cegielski, Stefanie Berk and Thom Beers.
For those unfamiliar with Gaiman’s source material, American Gods is, at its mythic core, a sprawling ensemble piece “reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs.” David Slade, meanwhile, will helm the pilot of the adaptation, overseeing an ensemble that also features Yetide Badaki as Bilquis, Bruce Langley as Technical Boy, Crispin Glover as Mr. World and Jonathan Tucker as Low Key Lyesmith.
No word of a premiere date for American Gods at the time of writing, but given that production has been underway since March of this year, expect more news to emerge sooner rather than later.

A small screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods has been in development since 2011. It finally has the steam it's been looking for to rocket into production. It was originally set up with HBO and Tom Hanks' production company Playtone. It is now going to be developed at Starz with FremantleMedia under the guidance of producers Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, Heroes) and Michael Green (The River, Kings, Heroes).
The plot centers on "a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. It’s been so long that I can’t even remember when I started hearing about a potential treatment of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, but it looks like we’ve finally gotten to the stage that lets us celebrate. Starz will be developing it as a series, and it sounds like Neil Gaiman thinks he’s finally got the right situation to make things happen the way that he, and fans, will be satisfied with.
If it’s even half the caliber of the book, we should be in for something special. Of course, there’s a long road between then and now, and anything can happen.
