The BBC has picked up Irish crime drama Kin from Fifth Season.
The RTÉ series, which aired in the U.S. on AMC+, is the latest high-profile show snapped up by the BBC buying team, following the likes of AMC’s Interview with the Vampire. It is produced by Joker financier Bron Studios and Man in the High Castle outfit Headline Pictures.
Kin stars Clare Dunne (Herself), Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) and Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones). It follows gang wars in Dublin. A boy is killed and his family embarks on a gangland war with an international cartel: a war that is impossible to win. The Kinsellas are a local crime family, while the Cunningham cartel is a vast global organization.
“Anchored by a tremendous cast, Kin is a powerful and intense story of love, grief, family and crime, and its devastating ramifications,” said Sue Deeks,...

Leif, Freydis, and Harald are on the run in season two of Netflix’s Vikings: Valhalla. The lengthy season two trailer reveals there’s a bounty on their heads, yet Prince Harald Sigurdsson remains determined to sit on the throne of Norway.
In order to survive and rebuild their legacies, they’ll need to reinvent themselves.
The new trailer arrived along with a season two poster featuring series stars Leo Suter as Prince Harald Sigurdsson, Sam Corlett as Leif Eriksson, and Frida Gustavsson as Freydis Eriksdotter. Laura Berlin, David Oakes, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Bradley Freegard, and Hayat Kamille also star.
The eight-episode second season premieres on January 12, 2023.
“The whole concept of Season 2 is that we take these three heroes who are in Scandinavia and blow them out of their comfort zones,” explained series creator/showrunner Jeb Stuart in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “Season 2 for Harald and Leif is...

“Vikings: Valhalla” returns with its second season Jan. 12, but Variety has the exclusive first look at the “Vikings” prequel’s Season 2 trailer to tide fans over for another month.
Based on the History Channel series “Vikings” created by Michael Hirst, “Vikings: Valhalla” is set over a thousand years ago in the early 11th century and chronicles the heroic adventures of some of the most famous Vikings who ever lived — the legendary explorer Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett), his fiery and headstrong sister Freydis Eriksdotter (Frida Gustavsson) and the ambitious Nordic prince Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter).
The second season, which consists of eight episodes running 49 minutes each, finds our heroes shortly after the tragic fall of Kattegat; an event that has shattered their dreams and altered their destinies, per Netflix’s official description. Finding themselves suddenly fugitives in Scandinavia they are forced to test their ambitions and courage in worlds beyond the fjords of Kattegat.

Every streaming service needs a breakout series.
Netflix had House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black, Hulu had The Handmaid's Tale, and Apple TV+ had Ted Lasso.
If the first six episodes are any indication, Kin should be the breakout series for AMC+, and it's all thanks to the superb writing, acting, and directing.
Coming from Peter McKenna (The Last Kingdom) and Ciaran Donnelly (Altered Carbon), Kin focuses on one of the biggest crime families in Dublin, the Kinsellas, and how they process the loss of one of their own.
The beauty of a series like Kin is that none of the characters are guaranteed safety. Instead, the culture of crime families at war ensures that a devastating turn of events could change everything on a dime.
Charlie Cox (Daredevil) plays Michael Kinsella, a man who gets out of prison after several years and is slowly pulled back into his old ways.

Bear-wrestling and anachronistic tableware feature in the latest episode of Vikings season 4...
This review contains spoilers.
4.3 Mercy
This week's Vikings peaked in, if not a shared vision, at least what appeared to be simultaneous ones, as the figure of the dearly departed Aethelstan appeared to both Ragnar and Ecbert with very different messages.
For Ragnar, that message was summed up in a single word, "Mercy." And this communication might initially have seemed to us the clearer of the two: a plea from the Christian monk for his friend to grant clemency to the man who murdered him. Whether it is that Lothbrok is unable to forgive the boat-maker who deprived him of his English friend and therefore only shows compassion in the name of Helga or he knew Aethelstan well enough to know that that's actually who the monk sought forgiveness for in the first place is not entirely clear.

Vikings season 4 promises political intrigue, cultural clashes, fascinating characters and kickass battles. Welcome back!
This review contains spoilers.
4.1 A Good Treason
Vikings is back, and oh, what a joy!
Generally, before a new season of a show I’m reviewing starts, I go back and rewatch the previous season to prepare… to get myself back into the story. I admit that I didn’t do that with Vikings this time. The little one who had the good sense to be born last year just in time to give me maternity leave to write about last season’s Vikings is now a ravaging Viking himself, leaving Mummy little time to do more than is strictly necessary. As a result, it’s been months since I’ve seen an episode and got to experience the season premiere with new(ish) eyes.

Vikings, Season 2, Episode 5, “Answers in Blood”
Written by Jeff Woolnough
Directed by Ciaran Donnelly
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Est on History
I’ve previously remarked upon, the plots Hirst and co have put into play appear to be converging; and to it’s credit, it’s not just battle stories alone that are unfolding. Rather, tonight sees Bjorn drawn into battle alongside his father — and the determined eagerness upon Ludwig’s face feels both heart-breaking and authentic. It’s not difficult to imagine the limits Bjorn would toe in order to prove his place among the Lothbrok family — particularly given his implicit rivalry with Aslaug’s sons — nor is it difficult to imagine, after the starkly-shot battle scenes of tonight, that Hirst could take him down the road of self-sacrifice. As we’ve previously seen in the case of Gydda — and to a lesser extent, Lagertha’s abandonments of the...

Vikings, Season 2, Episode 3, “Treachery”
Written by Michael Hirst
Directed by Ciaran Donnelly
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Est on History
Permit me, if you will, to briefly discuss Travis Fimmel.
I’ve been perusing articles on Phillip Seymour Hoffman, as of late, in an overdue tribute to the great actor himself; and in one New Yorker piece, found the following quote: “the greatest movie actors don’t have to say or do anything, though a little trick of the light at the right moment doesn’t hurt.”
While to ascribe Fimmel A-lister status, at this point, feels pre-emptive, my belief he could be pencilled into this category still stands. Vikings, at times — for all its being flush with textured, moody detail and vividly drawn battle scenes — feels like a backdrop to Fimmel’s considerable gravitas. That subtly-shifting set of vocal inflections, coupled with (as always) the odd light in his eyes...

Vikings, Season 2, Episode 2, “Invasion”
Written by Michael Hirst
Directed by Ciaran Donnelly
Airs Thursdays at 10pm Est on History
Vikings glides across the space of years with an eerie sort of grace – something that could surely be attributed to the considerate lushness in the shots selected. All the same, the four-year lap tonight’s episode makes is a considerable length of time to scan over and as such, some of Aslaug and Ragnar’s conviction to one another and the family they’ve grown occasionally feels like a mock-up of a relationship. To his credit, Travis Fimmel’s uncanny ability to live in a scene prevents each tender moment or threatening one from sliding into melodrama. He pronounces each line as if it sits on the tip of his tongue: with a low, curmurring warmth that invites strangers – such as the serving girl who briefly speaks with him – to lean closer,...

Vikings, Season 2, Episode 1, “Brother’s War”
Written by Michael Hirst
Directed by Ciarán Donnelly
Airs Thursdays at 10pm (Et) on History
In the return of the History Channel’s Vikings, viewers will expect to be reacquainted with all the savagery and remorselessness of writer-creator Hirst’s compelling universe. Pitiably, the second season’s first offering, “Brother’s War”, is a patchwork of the first season’s dramatic elements, and one that’s shot through with lead-footed dialogue. In it, Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) remains where he was last left, the newly appointed leader of his people, despite opposition from his Loki-esque brother, Rollo (Clive Standen). Considering this complex relationship, Rollo’s surrender to Ragnar on the battlefield (and his later release by virtue of some anticipated divine plan) feels unwieldy, the narrative buckling under the need to save an intriguing character from an anticipatable fate. The title of the episode’s...

Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on ABC
From the title, it is evident that this week’s Once Upon a Time episode focuses on a certain mermaid. The casting directors hit the casting of Ariel right on the head; JoAnna Garcia Swisher is phenomenal as the beloved mermaid. Ever since Once Upon a Time began, fans and critics alike have pegged Swisher for the part of Ariel and we are now, finally, getting to see it play through. Review re-posted as the episode airs tonight on Channel 4 in the U.K.
The Arthurian legend is one of the most enduring of English folklore; forever being retold, re-imagined and updated for new audiences. In recent times we’ve had the dubious historical accuracy of 2004′s King Arthur movie, together with the family-friendly magical adventures of the BBC’s Merlin. Having found surprise success with Spartacus: Blood & Sand, Us cable channel Starz turn their attention to the Arthurian legend for a glossy co-production with Gk-tv that broadly follows the classic Le Morte d’Arthur version of the story — with a few alterations and flourishes. But does Camelot offer enough innovations to attract viewers who’ve been swamped by magic, knights, castles and swords since the turn-of-the-century?
Sadly, no. There’s nothing about Camelot that sets it apart as being very original or unpredicted; it’s just a competent retelling with a few twists.

The tale of King Arthur has been told often, by many and in many ways. But rarely has the Arthurian mythos been told on film as gravely, or as well, as it's being relayed in Camelot, the 10-episode series appearing on the Starz cable network.
Though there is no single accepted canonical version of the legend, this telling begins with the death of King Uther Pendragon, Arthur's illegitimate father. When Uther is poisoned, the wily sorcerer Merlin (Joseph Fiennes) journeys to claim Arthur (Jamie Campbell Bower), barely out of his teens, from his adoptive family, carrying him off to Camelot, a ruin of a castle, to assume the mantle of King of the Britons.
