To the Straw Hat Grand Fleet: What did you think of Season 1 of the live-action One Piece?
I spent a long time working on it with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios.
It seems people around the world have been enjoying the show, which makes the hard work from the production team truly worth it. To everyone who's been a fan of One Piece for years, and to those who experienced One Piece for the first time, thank you so much.

Fans had every right to approach Netflix and Tomorrow Studios’ One Piece with trepidation. Live-action adaptations of anime and manga have had a troubled history of just being downright terrible, with some of them like Adam Wingard’s Death Note coming from Netflix themselves. Fans were on high alert from the moment the streamer announced an adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s beloved One Piece manga. However, as more information such as castings came to light and that first trailer dropped, I found myself doing something very much in the spirit of the Straw Hat Pirates: against all the odds, I dared to dream – and those dreams were answered.
For the unfamiliar, the basic gist of One Piece is that it’s an action-adventure series following Monkey D. Luffy, (Iñaki Godoy) a joy-filled pirate who sets out to sea in search of his dream – finding a legendary treasure and becoming the next King of the Pirates.

Previously, in Netflix’s One Piece Episode 2, Luffy and his crew were captured by the clown pirate Captain Buggy, who sought the Grand Line map Luffy had swallowed. Meanwhile, Koby decided to join the Marines despite having a friendship with the pirates. Luffy’s hat held sentimental value as a gift from Red-Haired Shanks, who lost his arm protecting Luffy. It turned out that Buggy also had a Devil Fruit, known as the Chop Chop Fruit, which allowed him to split his body into parts to avoid getting hurt. However, Luffy ultimately defeated Buggy by trapping his body parts and retrieving the Grand Line Map. In the third episode of the series, we met a new member of Luffy’s pirate crew, and while the crew found themselves in a dangerous situation, facing a treacherous pirate captain, they would have to fight.

Netflix’s One Piece live-action adaptation is streaming worldwide and has certainly taken fans by surprise with some of the notable creative changes, one of which is the introduction of Vice Admiral Garp. In true Shounen fashion, the leading faction of the manga series, pirates, must also face formidable mainstay adversaries, which in this context are the Marines, the peacekeeping administration deployed by the World Government to keep miscreants like pirates and bandits in check. Vice Admiral Garp is presented as the leader of the Marine fleet, chasing Luffy and his straw-hat crew through the East Blue.

"One Piece" is not just one of the most popular manga ever, but a total phenomenon, and one of the best works of modern fiction. Eiichiro Oda crafted a story with great thematic depth, one that explores subjects of imperialism, oppression, racism, slavery, and that's just scratching the surface. It also expands its world to become one of the most fleshed-out fictional landscapes ever. Each island and each character exude a rich history and mythology, which make for a fleshed-out saga with extensive lore.
What keeps it such an entertaining and not at all convoluted story is the fact that Oda has never lost track of the sense of childlike wonder, of adventure, or the goofy tone from the early days of the manga. Even at its darkest moments, when someone died or when we experienced huge battles against governments, "One Piece" always has moments of absurd and ludicrous humor that make you smile.

Eiichiro Oda, the reclusive creator of One Piece, is praising Netflix’s live-action series adaptation of his bestselling manga title ahead of its August 31 premiere.
Via a “snail phone” given to him by One Piece star Iñaki Godoy and the cast and crew of the series, Oda affirms his approval of the adaptation in a video shared on the show’s verified Instagram account.
“As a Hollywood production, the action and VFX are great, not to mention the performances by the cast. But above all I want to call attention to how perfect the Straw Hat cast are,” says Oda. “It’s like you’re watching the Straw Hats in real life, which I’d love for you to savor.”

Hybrid is probably the word to best suit Michael Arias’ “Tekkonkinkreet”. Based on Taito Matsumoto’s manga “Black & White”, it is the story of Yin and Yang brothers Kuro (“Black”) and Shiro (“White”) as they battle to save their home from adults, greedy bad guys and inner demons.
Tekkonkinkreet is screening at Japan Society
Treasure Town is an island in the middle of the city – a lawless neighborhood that nobody runs, but everybody claims. Children run the streets, to the annoyance of the yakuza; while the police holds little real power. But this is the chaotic order in place. That is until Hebi and his evil empire want to raze Treasure Town to the ground and build an amusement park in the name of profit. This evil force unites the inhabitants against this outsider as they gradually realize the plans in place, and it’s up to out two young heroes to fight back.
