New Delhi, March 24 (Ians) Cricket legend Bishan Singh Bedi always had a firm grip and control over the ball while bowling his flighted left-arm spinners. The only difference these days is that he holds not one but two balls in his hands at the same time on medical advice. Instead of the leather, these are rubber balls meant to stimulate muscles after his recent multiple operations. And when his granddaughter throws the same fluorescent coloured balls in the air, Bedi's eyes light up and brings a smile to his face, even as he advises her: "catch it, catch it".
Six-year-old Suhavi, daughter of Bedi's daughter, is clearly the lifeline of the 74-year-old former India captain. So, when the ponytailed Suhavi throws the same green and orange fluorescent coloured balls high up in the air and tries to catch them, Bedi breaks into a genuine smile. Ahmedabad, Feb 26 (Ians) Ratings for the pitches used for the second Test in Chennai and the third in Motera, like elsewhere in the world, remain in the hands of the International Cricket Council (Icc). While the Icc will decide whether they offered fair competition between bat and ball, both England and India batsmen fell to straight deliveries and not to the ones that turned revealed their lack of application and nerve required for batting on surfaces assisting spin.
This isn't the first time it has happened in India and it isn't that past cricketers didn't know how to handle it, or visitors didn't seek local assistance and experience in handling such pitches.
At a dinner in 1987, during the fifth and final Test between India and Pakistan, retired former India captain and left-arm spinner Bishan Singh Bedi was asked by Pakistan's spin duo Iqbal Qasim and Tauseef Ahmed...

The uncertainty of the game of cricket is what makes it exciting to watch. The Indian team, especially after its superlative performances in Australia, was earmarked to defeat England easily at home. The success that India have had on their shores made them odds on favourites. Therefore, the defeat against England in the first Test match came as a bolt in the blue.
India, according to me, got the short end of the stick in all aspects. The Indian players having played for two months of Ipl and then completing a long arduous and commendable tour of Australia, came back bathed in glory. A week's break spent with their near and dear ones, in a euphoric state of mind, was a well-deserved welcome for each one of them. Although they were at home, they were in quarantine. They, therefore, missed out on rejoicing and enjoying their achievements with their friends and well-wishers.

New Delhi, Dec 26 (Ians) Former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi on Saturday warned Delhi's apex cricket body of legal action if his request to remove his name from a stand at the Arun Jaitley Stadium is further ignored. Bedi had made the request on Wednesday in opposition to the installation of a statue of late Arun Jaitley at the stadium.
Jaitley was the president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (Ddca) for 14 years between 1999 and 2013 and his son Rohan Jaitley currently holds that position.

New Delhi, Dec 23 (Ians) Wednesday was a day to forget for the Delhi and District Cricket Association (Ddca) as it copped twin embarrassment. A day after former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi wrote to Delhi's parent cricket body to remove his name associated with the Arun Jaitley Stadium and scrap his membership, he -- and his former Delhi teammate Kirti Azad -- on Wednesday scored a moral victory over an age cap rule that denied Azad the opportunity to become a Delhi selector.
The Ddca seemed to beat a hasty retreat when the issue of the 60-year cap for picking senior selectors for the 2020-21 domestic season was adjudicated by its Ombudsman Justice (retired) Badar Durrez Ahmed, who ruled that the present Ashu Dani-led committee would be allowed to select the Delhi team only for the T20 Syed Mushtaq Trophy that begins on January 10.

So, Mr President, I request you to remove my name from the stand named after me with immediate effect. Also, I hereby renounce my Ddca membership. I've taken this decision with sufficient deliberations," the 74-year-old wrote in an 841-word long letter emailed to Ddca president...

New Delhi, Dec 19 (Ians) It was a sunny day on June 24, 1974, when India were all out for 42 -- their lowest innings score then in Test cricket -- against England in London, and it was a bright day in Adelaide on December 19, 2020, when India broke that dubious record, pointed out illustrious former spinner Bishan Singh Bedi. He played that match at Lord's over 46 years ago and on Saturday, watched the third day's play of India's first Test against Australia on TV at his Delhi residence.
One difference between the two undesirable 'feats' was that the ball didn't swing at Lord's, but it moved at the Adelaide Oval. Another was that in 1974, one Indian batsman -- Eknath Solkar -- reached double figures, while on Saturday, all players from the visiting team were dismissed for single-digit scores. Solkar was unbeaten on 18 runs off 17 balls (105.88), comprising two boundaries and one six,...

New Delhi, Dec 19 (Ians) India being bowled out for 36 runs against Australia and losing the first Test by eight wickets was an "unmitigated disaster", said former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi, and gave all credit to the home bowlers for the superb performance. At the same time, he pointed out that the Indians did not throw away their wickets, and that they were out to unplayable balls in the absence of a "tight defence".
"This is unmitigated disaster, 36 all out -- absolutely. This can't be explained. Every good ball got a wicket. Mind you, the Indians did not throw away their wickets. They were edging the ball, and it was carrying. This is one of those things in cricket that can happen. And it has happened. You've got to accept it," Bedi told Ians.
"My sympathies are with the Indian team. But the Australians really...

New Delhi, Dec 16 (Ians) The wheel has turned a full circle for former India player and national selector Kirti Azad. He campaigned for cleansing of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (Ddca) of corruption when Arun Jaitley headed it for 14 years. Last month, when Jaitley's son became president, Azad sent him a good luck message, and now he has applied for a selector's post.
Azad, 61, says he didn't speak to Rohan Jaitley, 31, before applying for the selector's post. "No (I didn't speak to him), but I sent him a message once he became Ddca president. I wished him all the best. He is young and I have heard he has new ideas, and wanted to start academies etc. So, I suppose when somebody is young, keen to do something, why not help such people," Azad told Ians.

New Delhi, Dec 14 (Ians) A six-foot high statue of late Union Minister Arun Jaitley is to be installed at the Ferozeshah Kotla grounds and it would be unveiled on his 68th birth anniversary on December 28, most probably by home minister Amit Shah in person.
Jaitley was president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (Ddca) for 14 years, from 1999 to 2013, before he opted out of cricket administration due to the 2014 general elections that were coming up at the time. Presently, Ddca is headed by his son Rohan, 31, who was elected president unopposed on October 17.
The statue is being designed by the same father-son Suthar duo of Ram Sutar Art Creations Pvt. Ltd and Ram Sutar Fine Arts Pvt. Ltd, which designed Sardar Patel's Statue of Unity - the world's tallest at 597 feet -- on the banks of river Narmada in Gujarat.

Dubai, Nov 5 (Ians) Mumbai Indians (Mi) skipper Rohit Sharma was dismissed on the first ball during Thursday's Qualifier 1 game against Delhi Capitals (DC), giving ammunition to those in the Indian team management who want him to prove his fitness.
After Sharma's duck on Thursday, people have started asking a question, though not openly as yet: Was it his injury or his lack of form that was the basis of his non-selection in any of the three Indian teams -- Test, Odi, and T20 -- for the upcoming tour of Australia?
Sharma's sequence of scores in this Ipl is: 0, 4, 9, 35, 5, 35, 6, 70, 8, 80, and 12 -- a total of 264, scored at an average of 24 and at a strike rate of 126.31, in 11 matches.
But Sharma's overall Ipl figures are decent enough. Overall, in 199 matches, he has amassed 5,162 runs, scored at at an average of 31.09 and a strike rate of 130.58. He has hit 38 half-centuries and one century.

New Delhi, Oct 16 (Ians) When an issue cropped up in a planned unofficial India-Pakistan match in Kolkata in 1987, after the two countries didn't clash during the immediately preceding World Cup held in the subcontinent, Imran Khan wrote a critical piece in a leading sports weekly on the failure of Indian organisers to stage the game.
Well-known writer and commentator Kishore Bhimani, who passed away on Thursday aged 80, wrote a stinging rebuttal in the next issue, and topped it up with something like "I am allergic to the odour of the fish market".
That was Bhimani -- straightforward, honest, brilliant writer/journalist, and a forceful radio and TV commentator. He always called a spade a spade. He passed way in a private nursing home in Kolkata on Thursday. Bhimani is survived by his wife and a son.

Actor Angad Bedi is taking professional training from a Ranji level coach to hone his skills for his role of a star cricketer in the second season of "Inside Edge". He says he had to learn many new shots to make his act authentic.
"It's basically the rise of the Phoenix for Arvind Vashist, my character, in season two. There is a lot more cricketing action in store for me compared to the first season," Angad Bedi said.

He added: "In season one, Arvind Vashist was known as Captain Cool, the team's Mr. Dependable. Whenever he went in to bat, he was considered the player who would drop anchor and play out the maximum number of overs."
Angad Bedi, who is the son of former Indian cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi, said his character bears slightly different shades for the second season.
