80s and 90s kids: prepare to discover your new favourite shop...
Sometimes, you have to dig a bit to find real treasures. A cult film, an out-of-print book, an unsigned local band, or, in this case, the best shop in the world.

Bargains Galore, tucked away in the middle of a shopping street in Holyhead, looks like an unassuming souvenir and general odds 'n' ends shop. You'd be forgiven for walking past the buckets and spades, and the odd jackets, without giving it a second glance. You'd also be making a huge mistake.
Bargains Galore is no ordinary tat shop. Step inside its Tardis-like interior, and you're presented with a wonderland of retro paraphernalia, toys and collectibles.

We salute Terry Brain and Charlie Mills, creators of 1980s children’s stop-motion animated TV series, The Trap Door…
Somewhere in the dark and nasty regions where nobody goes stands an ancient castle. Deep within this dank and uninviting place lives Berk, overworked servant of The Thing Upstairs. But that’s nothing compared to the horrors that lurk beneath the trap door. For there is always something down there, in the dark, waiting to come out…
What was under the trap door? In 1986, a three inch stack of film reel cans forming a makeshift plinth for whatever Plasticine monster was due to spill out of it in that episode. Over the course of forty mini-episodes in the mid-eighties, a legion of skittering demons and tentacled beasts slithered off those reel cans and into the psychedelic polka-dotted castle dungeons where they caused havoc for servant Berk and his disembodied skull companion Boni.

Some great artists have had the biopics they’ve deserved (Vincent van Gogh), some haven’t (Pablo Picasso) and some are yet to get one at all (Tony Hart). By all accounts, J. M. W. Turner could be pretty satisfied with Mike Leigh’s take on his later years, Mr. Turner. A Cannes favourite this year and already a critical darling, it has a new poster to share with you and a bus stop near you in the not-to-distant future. Centering on the final 25 years of his life, Mr. Turner picks up with the artist desolate after the death of his father and polarising the artistic community and public alike with his iconoclastic approach to life. He journeys the land, painting, visiting brothels and calling on the good graces of the aristocracy, at one point clambering the mast of a ship in a snowstorm to better capture the scene on canvas.

David Beckham made his much-anticipated appearance in Only Fools and Horses on Friday night (March 21).
The former footballer starred opposite Sir David Jason (Del Boy) and Nicholas Lyndhurst (Rodney) in the one-off skit for Sport Relief.
The Only Fools short saw Del Boy and Rodney trying to flog 'Golden Balls' boxers, which Rodney begrudgingly modelled.
Sitting in the cafe, Del Boy was moaning about 'that git' who signed the pants, only for Beckham himself to correct him: "They're boxer briefs."
Beckham, as well as delivering the classic line "Shut up you tart" to Rodney, also told Del Boy's younger brother exactly how to model the boxers.
Swapping their favourite artist picks, Rodney went for Matisse while Beckham chose Tony Hart: "That Morph cracks me up."
Trying to keep a low-profile in the market, Beckham then drew attention to himself in a humiliating incident which paid tribute to...

Aardman animation boss, Peter Lord, has been in meetings about Morph. Who'd like to see the return of Tony Hart's Plasticine pal?
Here's a bit of nostalgic cheer for a Monday afternoon.
We'll wager that more than a few of you grew up watching children's TV presenter Tony Hart interact with Morph, the Plasticine scamp who lives in a box of art supplies and speaks in a language of honks and word-imitating toots. Readers of a, er, lesser vintage may have met Morph on SmArt in the nineties.
Jog your memories with this short clip:
Morph's creator, Aardman's Peter Lord, asked his Twitter followers today if they thought Morph was due a comeback. Unsurprisingly, the first volley of response was overwhelmingly in the positive. Here's the message Lord sent:
"Just been having a meeting about Morph. Due for a comeback? He's up for it,...

Children's TV icons Morph and Chas are to make a comeback. The stop-motion characters, who appeared on several programmes fronted by the late Tony Hart, will star alongside animator Ricky Martin in one-off Cbbc show Ricky's Radical Reinventions. The Aardman Animations production sees Martin attempt to make products from around the home out everyday items, unaware that Morph and Chas are living in the back of his van and causing "shenanigans". "It's exciting to be able to introduce Morph and Chas to our audience for the very first time - and parents will no-doubt enjoy seeing them return to our screens too," said Cbbc controller Damian Kavanagh. "They're not the only stars of the show, though. Ricky Martin is (more)...

Even with the aid of an army of elves and a team of flying reindeer pulling his sleigh, just how does Santa Claus manage to travel the entire world in one night and leave all those gifts?
Setting out to answer one of the key questions that youngsters ask their parents is Sony Pictures' new animated family comedy Arthur Christmas, released in cinemas on November 11. It's produced by Bristol stop-motion animation studio Aardman, who have also brought us Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run, Shaun the Sheep and Tony Hart's Plasticine character Morph.
James McAvoy, who is on screen as the younger Professor Xavier in X-Men: First Class, plays the voice of Arthur, Santa's good-natured but clumsy younger son, in this film directed by Sarah Smith and co-directed by Barry Cook.
Hugh Laurie voices his older brother Steve, Jim Broadbent is Santa, Bill Nighy is Grandsanta, Imelda Staunton is Mrs Santa,...

"This is an Art Attack, this is an Art Attack... This Is Art Attack!" Neil Buchanan's long-running Citv hit series was the rebellious, more exciting older brother to Tony Hart's various BBC one art shows. Buchanan, a member of heavy metal group Marseille, understood that kids love anarchy and it was his own unique 'zany' approach (do you remember the show's comedy character The Head!) that made the programme a runaway success and its a host a TV icon. When not busy rocking or creating Art Attacks out of broken-down Ford Cortinas, Pva glue, coat hangers and fifty-seven sweatshirts, Buchanan became a staple (more)...

What does it say about our society if even Hollywood starlets don't feel up to much?
Did Hollywood kill Brittany Murphy, the Sin City actress who died of a heart attack? Her half-brother, Jeff Bertolotti, seems to think so. He said: "People come with their dreams and get chewed up alive and those who make it get chewed up alive anyway."
Murphy, 32, was said to suffer from a heart murmur and a food disorder. Reports state that up to 10 types of prescription drugs were found in her home – for bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety and to stop seizures. There were also pain-relief pills, for what has been widely described as a "plastic surgery addiction" – breast job, nose job, lip job and liposuction – a list that can only be viewed with sadness and anger.
No one is claiming that Murphy was one of the acting greats but she does not deserve to...

Above: Animator Bartek Prusiewicz works outside the Pink Palace house/apartments complex situated on a soundstage.
Stop motion animation fascinates me, marveling at the Dinosaurs of Jim Danforth and Roger Dicken in The Land that time forgot as a child. The maestro Ray Harryhausen work in everything he did and later the surrel imaginings of check master Jan Svankmajer. As well as creations like Morph the animated companion of the late great Tony Hart and top notch kids show The Trap Door. Apart from generally just loving the look of Stop motion the patience of its creators amazes me. Anyway check out the images above from Coraline.

Mourners have paid their last respects to the "inspired and inspiring" TV presenter Tony Hart. Family and friends packed a small Surrey Church in memory of the much-loved artist, who died at the age of 83 on January 18. Pa reports that BBC director and producer Chris Pilkington told the congregation: "Right from the start I was struck by the extraordinary gifts of this gentleman, this artist. He was the first, the pioneer, the magician who used his skills to inspire and empower his eager wide-eyed audience. "Humble, yet ambitious, enthused, excited, surprised, delighted, self-critical, professional, dedicated, hardworking, an encourager, opening the eye of the audience (more)...
