Statuesque South African movie star and Sffilm tribute recipient Charlize Theron strode out on stage April 8 at San Francisco’s Castro Theater rocking leather shorts and looking every inch the fearless actress-producer, capable of taking on roles ranging from real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos to depressed mother-of-three Marlo Moreau in Jason Reitman’s “Tully.” However, as she demonstrated in our wide-ranging conversation, appearances can be deceiving.
“Tully” (Focus Features, May 4) is her second collaboration with screenwriter Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman; Roger Ebert described their first, “Young Adult”, as a “fearless character study” in which Theron was not only “one of the best actors now working” but also was “flawless at playing a cringe-inducing monster.”
Theron’s never been afraid of her dark side and describes a recent spate of femme villains as her “bitch period,” including the evil queen in “Snow White and the Huntsman,” one-armed Imperator Furiosa in “Mad Max: Fury Road,...

Motion picture and television talent agent/manager J.J. Harris died of what is believed to be natural causes on Friday afternoon and was found today in her Beverly Hills home by her staff. She was 62. Always classy and funny but never a pushover, she at one time was among the top women talent agents and sole practitioner managers in Hollywood, representing such notable clients over the course of her decades-long career including Kevin Costner, Charlize Theron, Dakota and Elle Fanning, Kate Bosworth, Drew Barrymore, and Scott Bakula. After starting her career at the old William Morris Agency and jumping to UTA as a partner, she started her own management company more than a decade ago. Harris ran One Talent Management until recently deciding to wind down her business. Until her death, she was spending almost all her time on the career of her longtime confidante and client Costner. It was...

Exclusive: As we kick off 2013, here’s a reminder that it’s a hard business. Dakota and Elle Fanning have left One Talent Management, where JJ Harris repped the actresses practically since they were babies. What happened is that the thesps were handled day to day at One Talent by Brittany Kahan, who is leaving them to start a talent management division at the production company Echo Lake. Dakota, coming to the end of the Twilight Saga films, just finished the Naomi Foner-directed Very Good Girls and the Richard Laxton-directed Effie, while Elle just finished Maleficent with Angelina Jolie and is attached to star in Olive’s Ocean. The actresses are agented by Wme.

Exclusive: As Dakota Fanning emerged as a top young actress in films like Man On Fire and War Of The Worlds, and Elle Fanning began doing the same in films like Super 8 and We Bought A Zoo, the girls had always been represented by Cindy Osbrink, whose Osbrink Talent Agency specializes in pint-sized talent. The Fannings have decided to take a step toward adulthood (Dakota turns 18 next month, and Elle will turn 14 in April), and they have decided to leave Osbrink. They will soon take meetings with the major agencies and decide the next move. The Fannings continue to be repped by Jj Harris’s One Talent Management. The move comes as Dakota Fanning finishes up the Twilight Saga series with Breaking Dawn Part 2, and just wrapped the Ol Parker-directed Now Is Good and the title role in Effie, the Emma Thompson-scripted film that was directed by Richard Laxton.

Oscar-winner Kevin Costner has moved to Wme, where he signed with co-ceo and board member Patrick Whitesell. The Dances With Wolves director/star had been represented by CAA, and continues to be managed by One Talent Management’s J.J. Harris. Costner isn’t the average client who needs an agent to find him an acting job. He’s a self-generator whose need for an agency is to package and get funding for passion projects he writes, directs and stars in. And in the case of his last film, Swing Vote, self-finances. (That pic sank like a stone, as has several others. I feel Costner suffers from Warren [...]...

Attached to the project in a producing capacity since 06', Kate Bosworth is looking to appear in front of the camera in what would be Jean-Marc Vallee's first U.S. based film debut. The Canadian helmer known for several decade spanning, award-winning picture in C.R.A.Z.Y and his most recent effort in The Young Victoria (which receives a release this month via Apparition) will probably not tackle the Bosworth-starring Lost Girls and Love Hotels until 2011, as he is currently helming Café De Flore (a love story between a man and woman. And between a mother and her son.) - Attached to the project in a producing capacity since 06', Kate Bosworth is looking to appear in front of the camera in what would be Jean-Marc Vallee's first U.S. based film debut.
