If you can envision “Let’s Be Cops” reconstituted as a noirish psychodrama, you may be adequately prepared for “Duke,” an uneven but arresting indie thriller about two siblings who are driven to heroic extremes by childhood traumas. Co-directed by twin brothers James and Anthony Gaudioso, who also appear in strikingly different supporting roles, the film sustains more than enough dramatic tension from scene to scene to keep a viewer intrigued, despite the sporadic fuzziness of motivation and plot specifics, though it faces long odds as it tries to distinguish itself among scads of similar small-budget efforts currently available on streaming platforms.
After a portentous prologue that hints at psychologically scarring childhood experiences at an institution referenced only as “The Home” — maybe an orphanage, maybe a reformatory — the narrative proper kicks in as Dare (Carmine Giovinazzo), a tightly wired undercover detective, and Roost (Michael Monks), a uniformed officer, are patrolling a West L.

Before I Go to Steal: Polish’s Familiar, Bare Bones Genre Trick
It isn’t long after the film’s opening car crash sequence that the essence of Amnesiac comes grinding to an equally violent narrative standstill. The first of his three features set for theatrical release in 2015, director Michael Polish utilizes the blonde iciness of his actress/wife Kate Bosworth for a genre film duplicating the formulas of so many more infamous staples nearly every beat seems lodged in mundane presumptions. Unless audience members are suffering from the same condition promised in the title, there’s nothing remotely fresh or intriguing concerning this kidnapping thriller and its countless moments of generic flourishes.
A man (Wes Bentley) and wife (Bosworth) get into a car accident. He wakes up in their large home filled with mostly empty rooms to find he remembers nothing about or before the accident. He no longer recognizes his wife,...

With director Patrick Cunningham's feature directorial debut, Model Home, set to go before cameras next week in Los Angeles, we chatted with co-producer Will Clevinger regarding the indie thriller. Read on!
Co-written by Cunningham and producer William Frank, Model Home is being shepherded by High Windows Films and stars Monique Gabriela Curnen (Contagion) and Kathy Baker (Take Shelter, "Medium"). The narrative explores the practice of "live-in staging," in which recently evicted families are recruited to live in unsold properties. Curnen will play a single mother who begins to entertain dangerous fantasies while "staging" a model home in an otherwise empty development, while Baker portrays a realtor who grows increasingly suspicious and alarmed.
Clevinger and Ben Rabbers (The Devil’s Carnival) co-produce, as does Jarod Einsohn, with executive producer credits going to John Frank and Douglas Britton.

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories...
