- Amrita Pritam was born on August 31, 1919 in Gujranwala, Punjab, Pakistan. She was a writer, known for Pinjar (2003), Kartar Singh (1959) and Daaku (1975). She died on October 31, 2005 in South Delhi, India.
- She was a prolific writer authoring one hundred books. The most controversial was her autobiography "Rasidi Ticket".
- She received the Jnanpith Award, one of India's highest literary awards, in 1982 for Kagaz Te Canvas ("The Paper and the Canvas").
- As a novelist, her most noted work was Pinjar ("The Skeleton", 1950), in which she created her memorable character, Puro, an epitome of violence against women, loss of humanity and ultimate surrender to existential fate; the novel was made into an award-winning film, Pinjar (2003).
- She was awarded the "Padma Shri" in 1969.
- In 2007, an audio album titled, 'Amrita recited by Gulzar' was released by noted lyricist Gulzar, with poems of Amrita Pritam recited by him.
