You can't do better than Jeffrey Wright, so why even try? The actor is coming off his first-ever Oscar nod for "American Fiction," which is frankly shocking given the pedigree of his previous work. We're talking about the man who starred in Mike Nichols' "Angels in America" miniseries (reprising the role he played in the original Pulitzer Prize-winning play's Broadway debut), spent 15 years playing Felix Leiter, the coolest cat in the Daniel Craig James Bond movies, and was the Mvp of Matt Reeves' "The Batman" as Jim Gordon. He was also everyone's favorite human-turned-host, Bernard Lowe, across all four seasons of "Westworld" and has recently become a member of Wes Anderson's acting troupe.

He may not have walked away with an Oscar this year, but Jeffrey Wright is hot off the acclaim of his Academy Award-nominated film American Fiction and has been reported by Deadline to be joining Denzel Washington for Spike Lee’s upcoming remake of the Akira Kurosawa film High and Low. The remake of the 1963 crime thriller will come from a joint production from Apple and A24 Films. It is not yet announced what role in the film that Wright will be portraying as of yet.
In addition to American Fiction, Wright also starred in the Oscar-nominated film Rustin for Netflix. He appeared in last year’s Asteroid City from Wes Anderson, who he also worked with on The French Dispatch. He would garner three Emmy nominations for his role as Bernard Lowe on HBO’s Westworld. Hot on the heels of his first Academy Award nomination for his lead role in American Fiction, Jeffrey Wright has been set to join Denzel Washington and Ilfenesh Hadera in Spike Lee’s High and Low, an English-language reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller, for Apple and A24.
Details as to his role are under wraps.
Loosely based on the 1959 novel King’s Ransom, written by Evan Hunter under the pen name Ed McBain, the original High and Low follows a shoe company executive who becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom. It’s unclear how closely Lee’s film will hew to the original storyline.

This post contains spoilers for "Westworld" season 4, including the series finale.
HBO's "Westworld" had the misfortune to end just as ChatGPT was making itself known and the world was becoming aware of how far real-life AI has come. It's tempting to read into that, not to mention co-showrunner Jonathan Nolan's parting comments about "our AI overlords." Like, maybe the AI canceled "Westworld" for getting too close to the truth.
What's clear is that actor Jeffrey Wright's journey as AI programmer Bernard Lowe has reached its end on "Westworld." Wright no longer has to worry about getting bored with his character, since some all-powerful AI HBO has officially canceled the show after four seasons, giving him and other main cast members a nice severance package in the form of millions. However, there was a time when Wright doubted whether Bernard would be able to sustain his interest as an actor.

With its second episode of Season 4, HBO’s Westworld advanced its labyrinthine plot with more Man in Black savagery, Maeve and Caleb banter and angry androids than even Anthony Hopkins could handle.
The episode “Well Enough Alone” kicks off with William/the Man in Black attacking Clementine in her home. He shoots her and demands she tell him where Maeve is hiding. That said, it isn’t a given which William attacks Clementine and which one had that cartel massacred at the Hoover Dam last week. (Remember that Season 3 ended with Dolores-Hale seemingly replacing human William with a host-copy.) The...

HBO returned to Westworld this Sunday night, kicking off its fourth season with new mysteries, new threats, and the return of a fan-favorite character we haven’t seen since Season 2.
Season 4 opens on a seemingly unscathed William/The Man in Black (played by Ed Harris), who may or may not be the host-copy from the closing minutes of “Crisis Theory”/the Season 3 finale. He arrives at a mysterious canyon facility owned by a cartel-adjacent organization. Built over and around a massive lake, this place and its contents are immensely valuable to William. “Westworld” is one of the most compelling shows on television. It’s also one of the most confusing.
HBO’s prestige series, developed by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan and based on the movie by Michael Crichton (that served as something of a prototype for his later novel “Jurassic Park”), is knotty and complex, weaving a complicated narrative out of the ongoing battle between humans and lifelike robots (called “hosts”) in a technologically-advanced near-future. Season 4, which premieres on June 26, takes place seven years after the events of the previous season (which aired more than two years ago) and is even further away from the theme-park-robots-run-amok conceit of the first season.
All of which is to say: you probably need a refresher. And we are here to deliver that refresher. At the very least, it’ll keep you from scratching your chin and running to Wikipedia every few minutes.

While HBO’s “Westworld” was originally based on the 1973 movie starring Yu Brynner, the series quickly moved beyond its cinematic roots into the world of role playing games and overlapping storylines before moving outside the walls of the park into the real world in Season 3. Season 4, returning to HBO on June 26, feels inspired by both the 1976 feature film sequel “Futureworld” and “The Matrix” as the characters (and the audience) struggle to determine what’s real and what’s a simulation.
The first two seasons of “Westworld” explored a massive live-action open-world role-playing game run by Delos Corporation. A destination experience where wealthy human guests can live out their fantasies through various themed experiences in the park. The guests, given free reign to be on their worst behavior, often tortured the lifelike robot “hosts”, stuck in the park on an endless horrific loop. Jeffrey Wright has an update on the fourth season of Westworld, which has been delayed due to Covid-19. The HBO series’ Season 3 concluded on May 3, 2020.
“We wrapped last December, but I’m not exactly sure when it’s when it’s coming out,” Wright told Deadline on Monday while promoting the Apple TV+ docuseries he narrated, Lincoln’s Dilemma, premiering February 18.
He continued, “Season 4 is going to be more of the Westworld you’ve come to expect and more digging down into some issues and some technology that is going to look familiar to us, as always. It’s gonna be exciting. I’m not sure exactly when we’re to air but within the coming months, certainly.”
He also shared what his character Bernard Lowe has been up to in the interim.

In the late ’80s, Jeffrey Wright was finishing up his studies at Amherst College, dividing his time between acting, lacrosse, and a political science degree. In the midst of all that, he got the chance to study with James Baldwin. The writer was a literary icon by the time he arrived at the liberal arts college to teach in the humanities department, and Wright landed a spot in Baldwin’s lecture.
But Wright had so much going on that he never actually made it to any of the classes, and Baldwin died a few months later.
“It was one of the biggest regrets of my life,” Wright said in an interview, some 35 years later, while sitting on a park bench at the Telluride Film Festival. “I’ve had a profound relationship to his work for as long as I can remember, to what he means to American literature and American political thinking.

Jeffrey Wright remembers the moment last year when the UK production of “The Batman” shut down. The 55-year-old actor was a few months into playing police commissioner Jim Gordon for director Matt Reeves’ reboot of the DC Comics character when suddenly, in between takes, one of the actors coughed.
“Every head in the room swiveled toward that,” Wright said during an interview from a picnic table at the Telluride Film Festival, where he was promoting his role in Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch,” which screened earlier in the weekend. “And I was spraying that whole room, so if I had it that particular day, everybody would’ve had it. We shut down the next day.”
Production on “The Batman” proved to be a constant rollercoaster for everyone involved, as the temporary delay last March turned into a six-month halt; three days after it resumed in September, an actor tested positive.

HBO’s adaptation of Michael Crichton’s Westworld is an interesting barometer of geekdom’s temperature. The first season arrived and it was a cause celebre, given its rich, sprawling cast, topical questions about the role of AI in our lives, and plenty of violence and nudity.
The second season clearly went off the rails and people questioned what was going on even as those who stuck around were intrigued by the glimpses into the other worlds vacationers could visit.
Through it all, there was Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood), the android who went beyond her programming and chose to control her destiny. In the third season, things went back on the right track as you can see for yourself in the just-released Westworld: Season Three: The New World from Warner Home Entertainment.

Jeffrey Wright received his third Emmy nomination for his performance as Bernard Lowe on HBO’s “Westworld.” He had previously won in 2004 for reprising his Tony-winning performance in Mike Nichols‘s miniseries adaptation of Tony Kushner‘s award-winning play, “Angles in America.” His episode submission for this year is the season finale, “Crisis Theory.”
In this episode, Bernard takes Ashley Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) to a motel room after getting shot by William (Jimmi Simpson). Bernard later realizes that the AI computer system, Rehoboam, was not trying to prevent the collapse of civilization, but was working to delay it as long as possible. He also realizes that Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood) had put the key to the virtual world, Sublime, in his mind. Bernard enters into the Sublime to learn how humanity can rebuild, while also appearing to go idle to Stubbs.

A version of this story about Jeffrey Wright first appeared in the Emmy Hot List issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
For the first two seasons of “Westworld,” we mostly saw Jeffrey Wright’s character, android programmer (and actual android) Bernard Lowe, inside the created environment of the Westworld theme park. But Season 3, which landed 11 Emmy nominations, including one for Wright, finds Bernard taking on a secret identity and navigating his way in the real world.
It also, in the closing moments of its May finale, found Bernard emerging from a long journey into The Sublime, the digital world housing all of the Westworld hosts that Dolores locked away safely from human control at the end of Season 2. We know it was a long journey because Bernard is covered in dust when he finally opens his eyes — but how long it’s been is the question.

The following contains spoilers for Westworld season 3.
Through two and a half seasons, HBO’s Westworld had delighted in leaving little mysteries within the show for viewers to ponder (and obsess over). Questions like “what lies in the center of the maze?” or “who is the Man in Black?” have been major driving forces of the plot. For the end of season 2 and the first half of season 3, Westworld had another grand game afoot for attentive viewers: who are the five “pearls” that Dolores rescued from Westworld to bring back to the real world?
As a reminder, a pearl is basically the spherical software unit for the hosts at Delos’s parks. While the bodies of the hosts are technological marvels, it’s the pearl that drives every robot’s personality. In essence, Dolores left Westworld with the brains of five of her compatriots. The following contains spoilers for Westworld season 3 episode 1.
Through two seasons of Westworld, Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright), may have been the closest thing viewers had to a hero to identify with. In season 1, he was one of a precious few human characters to keep track of. Then in season 2, after it was revealed that he was a host modeled after original Westworld creator Arnold, Bernard still kept up his heroic ways.
And yet, here in the beginning of Westworld season 3, Bernard is public enemy number one. He lives a transient and ascetic lifestyle, working as a farmer and trying to avoid capture from the world’s governments. At one point while working on a cattle farm somewhere in Asia, Bernard tracks down an article about his own manhunt. It reads:

Jeffrey Wright and Jonah Hill are in talks to star in the upcoming film from director Matt Reeves, “The Batman,” according to new reports. The DC reboot will star Robert Pattinson, as already announced, as the caped crusader.
Wright is circling the role of Commissioner James Gordon, one of the Dark Knight’s most trusted allies in Gotham City. In the 1989 version of the film directed by Tim Burton, Gordon was played by Pat Hingle. In Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films — which brought a certain gravitas and real-world solemnity to the pop-colored comic book franchise — Gordon was played by Gary Oldman.
Jonah Hill, per Collider, is in talks to play The Riddler. He has previously been played in live-action by Frank Gorshin and John Astin in the 1960s “Batman” television series, Jim Carrey in the 1995 film “Batman Forever,” and Cory Michael Smith in the series “Gotham.”
