In 2023, anti-drag laws are being debated in at least 14 states, including Tennessee, the first to officially ban “adult cabaret performances” — which includes male or female impersonations — in public spaces or in the presence of children. But in 1980, drag formed the centerpiece of a new ABC sitcom.
Bosom Buddies is notable for being the first big break for Tom Hanks, then 24, and paired him with relative newcomer Peter Scolari, then 25. They played Kip Wilson and Henry Desmond, respectively — two pals who assume female alter-egos named Buffy and Hildegard in order to live in an affordable women’s hotel in New York City. The show was conceived almost by accident by Thomas L. Miller and Robert L. Boyett, the duo behind a raft of 1970s hit sitcoms including Happy Days, Mork & Mindy and Laverne & Shirley.
Buddies was pitched to ABC as a male version of the latter, reminiscent of “a sophisticated Billy Wilder comedy.

Somewhere in between his Oscar-winning portrayal of a gay lawyer dying of AIDS in "Philadelphia" and his performance as the mild-mannered captain of an Army detachment ordered to rescue the sole surviving son of a family that lost three of their children to the Normandy Invasion in "Saving Private Ryan," Tom Hanks was declared the James Stewart of his generation. The evidence was compelling. As Forrest Gump, astronaut Jim Lovell, and Sheriff Woody, Hanks had come to exemplify all that is right and decent about America. We saw the best of ourselves in his characters, while, off-screen, he exuded good, clean charm whenever he turned up on a talk show or a red carpet. He seemed affable, erudite, and kind. But to call him the Baby Boomer James Stewart was to ignore Stewart's willingness to play hard against type.

Emmy-winning actor Peter Scolari, known for his work on Bosom Buddies and Newhart, died Friday at the age of 66 following a battle with cancer, TVLine has confirmed.
After appearing on series like the short-lived ABC sitcom Goodtime Girls, Scolari’s long TV career truly began with ABC’s Bosom Buddies (1980-82), where he co-starred as Henry Desmond (aka Hildegarde) opposite Tom Hanks’ Kip Wilson (aka Buffy). Two years after Bosom Buddies ended, Scolari followed that up with an Emmy-nominated turn as TV producer Michael Harris on Newhart, which earned him three consecutive nods for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Before he was Forrest Gump or Josh Baskin or Carl Hanratty, Tom Hanks was Kip Wilson on the American sitcom "Bosom Buddies," which ran from 1980 to 1982. The show featured the misadventures of two single men, working in creative advertising, who disguised themselves as women so that they could stay with a female co-worker in a building that didn't allow male tenants. The show was known for its clever use of improvisation, especially between Hanks and his co-star Peter Scolari.
The two were recently reunited as cast members in the Broadway show by Nora Ephron "Lucky Guy."
Thanks to Buzzfeed, an adorable outtake from the series has surfaced that shows Hanks trying hard not to lose it during a particularly funny scene with Scolari.
Watch it and see if you can keep from giggling!

You may know Tom Hanks as Forrest or Woody, but what about Kip?
Back in 1980 – long before he was the most successful actor in Hollywood – Hanks starred as Kip Wilson in a cross-dressing sitcom called Bosom Buddies. The series only last two seasons, and aside from intermittent collaborations, Hanks and his co-star Peter Scolari haven’t really worked together since.
But that’s about to change. Producers announced yesterday that Hanks and Scolari are reuniting on the upcoming Broadway production of Lucky Guy, the Associated Press reports.
