1969 Abitur in Marl. Until 1970, bank internship in Recklinghausen; 1970 to 1974, studied economics at the Ruhr University in Bochum, graduating with a degree in economics; 1977 to 1979, additional studies in English at the Ruhr University in Bochum.
1974 to 1976 trainee teacher at the vocational schools in Witten, 1976 to 1987 teacher at the commercial vocational schools in Wanne-Eickel, 1987 to 1998 teacher at the Holzkamp comprehensive school in Witten.

Since 1969 member of the SPD, since 1971 various functions in the SPD town association Witten with focus on youth policy, since the beginning of 1998 member of the sub-district board Ennepe-Ruhr. 1994 to 1998 member of the Witten town council.
Member of the Bundestag since 1998; since March 2001, member of the SPD parliamentary group executive and chairwoman of the SPD parliamentary group working group on family, senior citizens, women and youth.
