The eight-part Hulu series Pam & Tommy came to an end this week with a final episode that, much like the others, took place in a slightly different universe than our own. In this one, Mötley Crüe’s Generation Swine came out in June 1996 instead of June 1997, they promoted it with a show in the Tower Records parking lot featuring a song nowhere to be found in the band’s actual catalog, and they were bumped from a live MTV event to make room for Beck.

This year promises a bumper crop of hip-hop films – here's how to get up to speed with the genre

I was never sold on The Kids Are Alright and I never got the joke about Spinal Tap – but I understand the power of a good hip-hop documentary. For hip-hop fans who weren't around to witness battle raps in the Bronx or block parties in downtown NY, hip-hop docs are a valuable commodity. This year will see two new additions to the genre: Can't Forget New Jersey looks at the migration of hip-hop out of NY and there's also For The Record: The Story of Latin Hip Hop. If the hip-hop forums are to be believed, there is also a film in the pipeline about Eazy-e's life. Those of you lucky enough to be within striking distance of New York can get...

Adam Yauch, known to millions of Beastie Boys fans as McA, died of cancer today (Friday, May 4, 2012) at the age of 47. Yauch had been diagnosed in 2009, and when the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the following year, the illness kept him from attending the ceremony. The band became so beloved in its native city that tonight, the Mets are playing Beastie Boys songs in place of the batters' usual walk-up music.
The group formed in 1979 to play hardcore punk; in 1982 it had two tracks included on the seminal tape compilation New York Thrash, and had its first release, the Polly Wog Stew Ep.
The following year brought a big style change as the Beasties experimented with hip-hop by making the oddball 12-inch "Cooky Puss."

As Beastie Boys fans around the world mourn the passing of Adam "McA" Yauch at the age of 47, we thought it would be fitting to briefly look back on his tremendous career that he had with the band that he helped found. Aug. 4, 1964: Adam "McA" Yauch was born in Brooklyn, NY. After teaching himself how to play the bass guitar, Yauch formed the Beastie Boys in 1979 and soon was playing with Mike "Mike D" Diamond (born Nov. 20, 1965), Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz (born Oct. 31, 1966) and Michael "Mix Master Mike" Schwartz (born Jan. 16, 1970) while still in high school. 1985: The Ep, Rock Hard, is released. Band (now a trio sans Schwartz) opens up for such acts as Madonna,...

"It's good to be home, New Orleans," hometown hero Lil Wayne told the audience after taking the stage at Hornets Arena in the Crescent City. And the sold-out crowd of his birthplace loved him for it.
All of Weezy's I Am Still Music tourmates hit the stage on Thursday night, including Porcelain Black, Mix Master Mike & Travis Barker, and Ricky Rozay Ross, with an appearance by buddy DJ Khaled, each giving it their all, and the crowd was with them every step of the way.
After launching into the first quarter of his performance with "A Milli" and "Got Money" (featuring fellow Nola Mc Mack Maine), Wayne gave the city another series of nods. Before getting into "Go DJ," Wayne called out to DJ 45, "We in my hometown!

Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross may be getting the lion's share of the publicity on the I Am Still Music Tour, but venue after venue, Travis Barker has been rocking the stages too. Hip-hop's favorite drummer just released his long-awaited solo debut, Give the Drummer Some, last month, and he's brought a friend along on tour to help keep his album cuts fresh.
The Blink-182 drummer enlisted the Beastie Boys' DJ, Mix Master Mike, for his set. For Barker, his choice in DJ was all about finding a worthy successor to his friend and collaborator, Adam "DJ Am" Goldstein, who died of a drug overdose in 2009.

The music industry is changing. Anybody who's been paying attention to the past 10 years should know that. There are controversies to how the record labels react to technology's role, especially that of the internet's, in diminishing the respect towards copyrighted materials. Namely, their efforts in suing the fans for disproportionate amounts of money, more as a threat for others than a real hunt for justice.
Interesting to note—and this hourlong documentary serves as a reminder—that the fight had already begun about a decade or two earlier; started, not surprisingly, by emerging hip hop artists of the time. Names like Public Enemy and De La Soul are hip hop legends now, but there was a time when they were regarded as thieves.

Adam Yauch (aka McA of the Beastie Boys) announced today that the group will be taking some time out while he deals with a cancerous tumor on one of his salivary glands. As a result, the group will push back the release of their new album Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 1 and bow out of their upcoming tour dates, including headlining slots at Lollapalooza and All Points West. MTV News wishes Yauch a speedy recovery.
What's an even bigger bummer is that it's unlikely the Boys will be available to attend this year's Video Music Awards. riends of DJ Am are throwing a huge "welcome home" party for the celebrity disc jockey after he survived a tragic plane crash last month in South Carolina, announcing a benefit concert for people to attend. Mark Ronson, Steve Aoki, Danny Masterson and Mix Master Mike are just some of Am's friends confirmed to perform at the so-called "Welcome Home DJ Am" party, to be held October 14 at Avalon Hollywood.
In a statement to People magazine Wednesday, October 8, event organizers said Am has been "a close friend ... for many years," and the party is being organized not just as a fundraiser, but because his friends feel they "owe him a debt of gratitude that we can never repay, but we hope this helps just a bit." The organizers also added, "This a once in a lifetime event and we're proud to be a part of it."
