If there’s one defining feature of seemingly every Kanye West album rollout, it’s gotta be chaos. In the past, it was usually good chaos — oh, how we yearn for the days of first-week sales competitions, Good Friday drops, and music videos projected on buildings. But these days, it’s often grim chaos, and the rollout for Vultures 1, West’s new collaborative album with Ty Dolla $ign, has been another exhibition in the form: delays upon delays, sample issues, diatribes of various kinds, and an alternate album cover based...

It's been nearly 60 years since Julie Andrews first sang about how the hills of Austria were alive with the sound of music, but "The Sound of Music" remains a beloved cinematic treasure. Vividly colorful, unabashedly musical, and anchored by Andrews' performance, the story of Maria the would-be nun, and her small army of new wards — the Von Trapp children — is still rewatched and referenced often across the world.
With more than half a century of retrospect, "The Sound of Music" has also become a bit of a historical document: much of the film's cast and crew has since passed away, with the exception of Andrews herself and five of the seven actors who embodied the Von Trapp kids. Heather Menzies (Louisa) and Charmian Carr (Liesl) have both passed away in recent years, as has Christopher Plummer, who embodied family patriarch...

A couple days ago, we got our first look at the “crazy vampire hunter” character Willem Dafoe plays in The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here). So we know what he looks like in the film… but we may not be prepared for what the overall film looks like. While speaking to IndieWire, Dafoe said this take on Nosferatu is unlike anything he has ever seen before!
An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. The eerie Orlok seeks to buy a house near Hutter and his wife, Ellen (Greta Schroeder). After Orlok reveals his vampire nature, Hutter struggles to escape the castle,...

Twenty-three years ago, Willem Dafoe played actor Max Schreck in the film Shadow of the Vampire, which gave a behind-the-scenes look at the making of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) to reveal that Schreck really was a vampire. Now Dafoe has a role in The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of Nosferatu – but he’s not playing the title role. Instead, he’s playing a “crazy vampire hunter” named Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, and Entertainment Weekly has just unveiled an interesting image that shows Dafoe in character! You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Decades before Marvel Studios brought Werewolf by Night to the screen on Disney+, comic book creator Roy Thomas was dreaming up his own horror-centric special presentation.
Thomas, the former Marvel editor in chief and co-creator of Werewolf by Night and a number of others Marvel characters, recently unearthed a 1958 short film he made with his friends as a teenager in Jackson, Missouri. Thomas scripted Les Ghouls and acted in it alongside pals that included Gary Friedrich, who would go on to co-create the well-known character Ghost Rider with Thomas when they both were at Marvel.
Thomas shared Les Ghouls with The Hollywood Reporter in honor of Marvel debuting a color version of 2022’s black and white Werewolf by Night last week. Les Ghouls was an homage to 1948’s Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, which was a favorite of him and his friends. Thomas’ friend John Short, who owned the camera,...

There’s a lovely moment toward the end of All Quiet On The Western Front, sandwiched between several truly awful moments (and one absolutely devastating one). Felix Kammerer’s Paul Bäumer tries to walk his friend Kat (Albrecht Schuch) back to a field hospital in a church. He’s been shot, and he’s bleeding badly. Trying to stay chipper, Kat remembers a word game he used to play. You rhyme something with the last line someone sang. “Nothing rhymes with trifle,” Kat says. “Nothing.” Paul thinks. “Rifle rhymes with trifle,” he says. The two men laugh. It’s the last time anyone laughs in All Quiet On The Western Front.
Edward Berger. But it’s not your average war film. In Britain, the popular view of World War I is that phrase of the German General Ludendorff’s: that the heroic dead were lions led by donkeys in high command.

The pair pretended to be madly in love for a ruse that would benefit both of them, but they ended up with real feelings for each other. Daphne and Simon married by the end of the series, but some fans think there was a better suitor after her hand.

Ulrich Seidl is a director of curiosities, of shabby characters, pursued with an uncompromising and sometimes unfashionable gaze. Yet Sparta arrives in competition at the San Sebastian film festival at the head of considerable controversy not from its disturbing themes of pedophilia, but from incidents off-screen.
The Spanish event debuts the movie after the Toronto film festival scrapped its world premiere at the last minute in the fallout of allegations made in Germany’s Der Spiegel. The weekly magazine’s lengthy investigation said Seidl didn’t tell the underage cast and their guardians of the story’s themes and that he underprepared his mainly non-professional performers of the film’s nudity, alcoholism, and violence. Seidl denies the accusations, but canceled his appearance and the accompanying press conference in the Basque Country to support the film.

Patriotic young men are as disposable as potato peels in All Quiet on the Western Front, Edward Berger’s new adaptation of the novel that gave us the 1930 Lewis Milestone movie of the same name. For some, seeing this German book rendered by a German will be reason enough for a remake; for many others, especially those reliant on history-ignoring Netflix (where this Front will debut next month), the original might as well not exist.
The best case for a remake, of course, is that photography and effects have advanced so far since Milestone’s day that Berger’s Front needn’t rely mostly on script and performances to make its points: A skillfully made picture with a high tolerance for muck, it’s a visceral experience, albeit a less punishing one than some other modern war films, such as Sam Mendes’ 1917. “All Quiet on the Western Front” is one of those foundational texts that transcends clichés, because it invented them. Erich Maria Remarque’s 1928 novel and Lewis Milestone’s Oscar-winning 1930 film are cornerstones of the “war is hell” subgenre — which, in a post-”Apocalypse Now,” post-”Saving Private Ryan” era, has become more ubiquitous than the jingoistic war epics it was designed to counter.
There might be some fresh insight to be gained from a new adaptation of “All Quiet,” despite the ripple effects of its influence: War, sadly, has not ended because of films about how awful it is. And its futility and absurdity remain constant, even as its face evolves with the times. Sadly, Edward Berger’s doesn’t add much to the canon except for some starkly beautiful imagery.

Lewis Milestone’s 1930 classic All Quiet on the Western Front was based on the 1928 novel by Erich Maria Remarque and became the first adaptation of a book to win the Oscar for Best Picture, as well as the first Best Picture Oscar winner to also take Best Director. It has hardly been touched by filmmakers since then save for a TV movie remake by director Delbert Mann in 1979 that starred Richard Thomas. Now that has changed, and in a significant way, as the book has finally been taken on by Germany with director Edward Berger’s adaptation that finally shows us the perspective from the German side. It has already been selected as the German entry for the 95th Oscars’ International Feature Film race, and just had its world premiere Monday at the Toronto Film Festival.

The 2022 Toronto International Film Festival has officially cancelled the world premiere of Ulrich Seidl’s film “Sparta” after misconduct allegations emerged against the director.
Mere hours before the slated “Sparta” screening, TIFF withdrew the feature. German news outlet Der Spiegel previously published allegations of child exploitation against Seidl and the “Sparta” production on September 2.
A statement on the official TIFF festival page now reads: “This film has been withdrawn from festival. We apologize for any inconvenience. Ticket holders will receive an email from TIFF Customer Relations with more information.”
IndieWire has reached out to the Toronto International Film Festival for comment.
“Sparta” focuses on Ewald (Georg Friedrich), an Austrian judo teacher in Romania who is a non-offending pedophile. The film is a sequel to Seidl’s 2002 drama “Rimini,” focused on Ewald’s brother. According to Seidl, the film is based on a true story.

It’s hard to describe what Ida Engvoll does on “Love & Anarchy” as anything other than a magic trick. There’s a moment early in Season 2 of Lisa Langseth’s Netflix series involving a cup of coffee that’s somehow wilder and funnier and more believable than it has any right to be. Part of the thrill of “Love & Anarchy” is that the characters at the heart of it often seem surprised in the same way. Whether it’s a secret kiss, a coworker walking into a meeting in slippers, or a transformative weekend retreat, watching these people continually pinch themselves to remind them that what’s happening in front of them is actually happening is what helps make this show a top-tier Netflix viewing experience.
Sofie (Engvoll) finds herself in plenty of those moments early on in “Love & Anarchy” as the incoming new high-powered consultant at Stockholm-area publishing house Lund & Lagerstedt,...

The Dolby Theatre was alive with the sound of music on Thursday, as the American Film Institute presented the two-year-delayed Life Achievement Award Gala in honor of Julie Andrews‘ career, from “Mary Poppins” to “The Princess Diaries”
Speaking to Variety on the red carpet, Andrews called the honor “a culmination, in a way, of wonderful events and great fortune.”
“My early years were in in Music Hall in London and vaudeville, and I was just a bit of a child brat, I suppose, that had a big voice,” Andrews said. “But the wonder was that I then was asked to go to Broadway and then to Hollywood.”
Andrews made her Hollywood debut playing the flying nanny Mary Poppins in 1964, and has spoken in the past of the learning curve she faced when she first made the transition from stage to screen, clearly to fruitful results. When asked if she had...

The Hollywood Hills were alive with the sound of music with this reunion. Julie Andrews received the AFI Live Achievement Award at a Gala Tribute in Los Angeles on June 9, and the stars who played the von Trapp children in The Sound of Music came together to celebrate her career. Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich), Duane Chase (Kurt), Angela Cartwright (Brigitta), Debbie Turner (Marta) and Kym Karath (Gretl) walked the red carpet at the Dolby Theater and at one point led the crowd in a sing-along of "Do Re Mi." And before they had to say so long, farewell for the night, they got a group picture with Andrews, who played Maria in the 1965 film and received an Academy Award...
