Roger Corman, the pioneering producer and director, known affectionately as “the king of B movies,” passed away on May 9 at his home in Santa Monica, California. Corman had as much influence over modern Hollywood as Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese. And for good reason: Without him there likely wouldn’t even have been a Spielberg or Scorsese.
This maker of hundreds of low-budget horror, sci-fi, and exploitation films is to this day remembered by many, and rather unfairly, as a B-movie hack, but Corman’s aesthetic sensibilities have come to dominate the franchises we now call tent poles, and his protégés number among the most influential people in cinema. And he enjoyed every minute of it.
Corman came off as very humble, resembling no one so much as Mr. Rogers. He laughed at himself and his experiences frequently. Many of the movies that he made were ridiculous but they were knowingly so.

For the first time since his character was seemingly killed off on “General Hospital” earlier this year, actor Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Spencer Cassadine) has officially confirmed his exit from the daytime drama series after posting a formal statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday.
“I’m so appreciative of the opportunity that ‘Gh’ gave me, and I wouldn’t be as busy as I am professionally if it weren’t for the talented producers, writers, directors and fellow actors,” began Chavez in his statement before calling attention to Frank Valentini, the show’s executive producer, where he called him a “mentor and friend.” Chavez also notes he and the show are keeping the door open for a potential return should the opportunity arise.

The Chicago P.D. hiatus ended with a new episode on Wednesday night.
When we last saw the show, Dante Torres was finishing up an undercover case to bring down a drug boss, Rafel Perez (Julio Cedillo).
During that case, Torres became romantically involved with the wife of Rafel Perez, Gloria Perez (Yara Martinez).
In a dramatic conclusion, Gloria killed Rafel. Rather than run, she told Torres she was remaining in Chicago. It could mean the story circles back later.
Also, earlier this season, the Chicago P.D. cast added actress Bojana Novakovic as Detective Josephine Petrovic. The quirky detective helped Intelligence on several cases, but Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) became suspicious of her and discovered a drinking problem.
A serial killer also remained on the loose, but this new episode was focused on a separate case.

Actor Charlize Theron has gained and lost weight off and on for feature film roles. In the movie Tully, Theron went up to one of her heaviest weights. And doing so would take a toll on her mood.
Charlize Theron put on fifty pounds for ‘Tully’ Charlize Theron | Michael Tran/FilmMagic
Theron might not have had to gain the amount of weight that she did for her 2018 feature Tully. The drama saw the Oscar-winner gain 50 pounds to play a suburban mother with an unplanned child on the way. Theron took it upon herself to put on as much weight as possible for her role. And although it helped her performance, it was at the expense of her mood.
“I gained close to 50 pounds for this film,” Theron once told Et. “I just I wanted to feel what this woman felt, and I think that was a way for me to...

Prior to making headlines the next day after a short-lived health scare that required a brief stay in hospital, Ireland’s President Michael D. Higgins arrived at Dublin’s Complex arts center last Wednesday to present the Dublin film festival’s highest honor to Steve McQueen. Introduced in 2007 and named the Volta Award, after the first commercial cinema set up in Dublin in 1909 by writer James Joyce, its previous recipients include Daniel Day Lewis, Claudia Cardinale and Al Pacino. The famously serious director was in high spirits, enthusing that “festivals are about passion, a passion for film.” “There’s always a buzz, isn’t there?” he continued. “[As you] go to the next picture, the next film, you tend to give people tips and say, ‘Oh, you’ve got to see this, you’ve got to see that…’”

What’s going on with the Friday the 13th franchise? The saga has been on hold for several years now due to a messy legal issue, but Jason Voorhees is finally set to return in a brand new series from Bryan Fuller, A24 and Peacock titled “Crystal Lake.” It’s coming soon, possibly even later this year, but what about a new installment in the feature film franchise?
For what it’s worth, Jason Blum is still trying to make something happen in that department. Blum has been saying for years that he wants to bring the Friday the 13th franchise into the Blumhouse family, and it sounds like he hasn’t yet given up on those hopes.
Speaking with Collider just this week, Blum once again expressed an interest in getting his hands on Jason Voorhees. Blum told the outlet, “[Friday the 13th] is not a Blumhouse project, but...

Jason Blum and James Wan have carved out a nice little partnership with some successful mid-budget horror movies. The two have collaborated with their production companies, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, for recent projects like the latest film in the Insidious series, which also had Patrick Wilson make his directorial debut, Insidious: The Red Door and the killer doll movie, M3GAN. Recently, it was revealed that Blum’s dream project is to revive the Friday the 13th franchise. The classic slasher series hasn’t released a film since the 2009 Platinum Dunes reboot.
The rights to Friday the 13th are currently tangled up with director Sean Cunningham and writer Victor Miller disputing who has the rightful possession, but Blum is brainstorming a way to usher in the new series if he’s able to acquire the property. Collider asked Blum what movie he’d greenlight right now if he could and he answered,...

Known for his exploration of universal themes including family, happiness and memories, Japanese director, producer, screenwriter and editor Hirokazu Kore-eda‘s newest feature Monster (2023) has received acclaim from critics and fans alike. Monster follows mother Saori whose son Minato (Soya Kurokawa) starts behaving strangely, leading her to think that something must be wrong. Soon discovering that a teacher is responsible, she storms into the school and demands to know what’s been happening to her son. However, as the story unfolds and the truth gradually emerges, it may not be anything close to what Saori imagined. Using clever storytelling methods to keep us intrigued, fantastic performances from the young leads and beautifully explored complex themes, Monster fits tidily into Kore-eda’s filmography as a heartbreaking study of childhood, growing up, and the harrowing idea that we may not know our children as deeply as we think we do.

Director Fred Dekker’s 1987 cult classic monster mash The Monster Squad (watch it Here) features variations of the classic Universal Monsters characters Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, and the Gillman, but it wasn’t actually a Universal production. So to avoid getting in trouble with Universal, the movie’s effects crew at the Stan Winston Studio had to create their own specific designs of the creatures… but that didn’t stop them from sneaking homages to the original monsters in there. It has been known for a while now that designers Steve Wang and Matt Rose hid the face of the original Creature from the Black Lagoon somewhere on the neck of their Gillman suit. Now – as pointed out by Monster Squad super-fan Shawn Robare of Plastic Rocket Pop – the exact location of that face has been found!

John Francis Daley is one of the most exciting comedic voices working today. Together, he and his writing/directing partner Jonathan Goldstein have given us such fantastic movies as "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," and "Game Night," as well as the screenplay for "Spider-Man: Homecoming." Their scripts strike the right balance between fantastical and relatability, and the duo has an eye for turning even the smallest moment into a visual spectacle.
But before that, and even shortly before they made their feature writing debut with "Horrible Bosses," the two collaborated on the script of an episode of the hit Fox series "Bones." Daley was no stranger to "Bones," as he played the recurring role of psychologist Lance Sweets starting in season 3.
For season 6, Daley got the chance to write an episode about the corpse of a myth-busting TV show host found in West Virginia, amidst rumors of a chupacabra attack.

Melissa Barrera seems remarkably composed for someone navigating one of the most trying periods of their personal and professional lives. You’ve probably seen the headlines: The rising star of Vida, In the Heights, and the Scream films was fired from the horror franchise and falsely branded antisemitic for a series of Instagram posts calling attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza that’s claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people.
She subsequently released a statement saying, in part, “I condemn anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. I condemn hate and...

Netflix announced Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story in May 2023 as the second season of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s true crime anthology series—Monster. The exciting viewing appeal of season 1, based on the life of American serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, evokes enthusiastic anticipation for a second season, as much as it has aroused renewed interest in the Menéndez brothers. Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story received mixed reviews for glorifying the Milwaukee Monster’s atrocities. But it didn’t stop the show from winning numerous coveted awards and pulling massive numbers. It became the second most-watched English-language series...

Scream (2022) and Scream VI star Melissa Barrera may have been fired from Scream 7, but she is in Universal Pictures’ upcoming “Dracula’s Daughter” film Abigail, which was directed by her Scream directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and is set to reach theatres on April 19th. Even beyond that film, Barrera told The Hollywood Reporter that she has no intention of leaving the horror genre behind.
Barrera, who has also starred in a horror movie called Bed Rest, said, “I don’t think I’ll be able to get away from horror, and I also don’t want to. I love the genre so much. It’s so much fun to make. Also, I think a genre that people show up to the theaters for no matter what. No stars have to be in the movie for people to show up. Traditionally, the concept of "the monster under the bed" is seen as a universal childhood fear, the most prominent example of our collective primal fear of the dark. For boys and young men, this mythical creature is typically seen as something to conquer, to stand up to. As fantasy, horror, and genre fiction continue to mutate into phases of postmodernism, this trope has expanded, where the monster isn't necessarily a threat to be subdued but rather a secret, special friend.
But what does this creature signify for girls and young women? If the horrific version represents the encroaching world of the patriarchy, might a cuddlier version see such a creature take the form of a confidant, companion, and protector? Where would he (assuming they're male) fit amongst the horror movie trope of survivor women being "paired" with their supernatural counterpart — is there something between "La Belle et la Bête" and...

Did Beauty kill the Beast? Or was it the other way around? Or maybe they lived happily ever after? Writer-director Caroline Lindy plays with classical expectations in her enjoyable debut feature Your Monster. Actress Laura Franco (Melissa Barrera) is just out of surgery when the film starts. We quickly learn she’s survived some unnamed cancer and, in the tough year of treatments, her theater-director boyfriend of five years Jacob (Edmund Donovan) broke up with her. To make matters worse, he also moved forward with producing a Broadway musical that they developed together, one with a lead role he’d promised to Laura.
Her only friend is fellow actress Mazie, played well by Kayla Foster, who lifts up a thinly written supporting character. Mazie’s unreliability leaves Laura alone in her transient mother’s New York City apartment, crying and eating pies. Until, that is, an upstairs neighbor reveals himself.

Scream heroine Melissa Barrera shines in Caroline Lindy‘s feature debut, Your Monster, an expansion of her short film. A wholesome, whimsical romance befitting of a classic Hollywood musical but with dark underpinnings, Your Monster lets Barrera showcase her range and singing chops, even when it can’t quite decide on a cohesive approach to its monstrous metaphor.
Erstwhile Broadway actress Laura Franco (Barrera) finds her life in shambles when cancer derails her career ambitions and her longtime boyfriend Jacob (Edmund Donovan) unceremoniously dumps her. Abandoned by her mother and ignored by her self-involved best friend Mazie (Kayla Foster), Your Monster introduces its protagonist at her lowest point, all wails and self-pity. Enter Monster (Tommy Dewey), a beast that’s lived in her childhood closet for years and took a liking to having the house to himself. Love eventually blossoms between the pair, exposing Laura’s inner Monster in the process.

Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega helped to usher in the Scream franchise for a new generation of audiences. While Scream V brought back the legacy characters from the 1996 original, Barrera and Ortega were able to take the baton and run with it, especially when Neve Campbell would not return for Scream VI. After the two previous films revitalized the franchise, Spyglass Media would obviously put in motion plans for another. However, nearly every notable name would encounter trouble with the planned sequel. Barrera, in particular, would be let go from the film after the actress made a social media post addressing the Israel-Hamas conflict, which the studio deemed to be anti-Semitic.
Barrera harbors no ill feelings toward the franchise, however. The actress would speak with Deadline at Sundance about her connection with the cast and how grateful she is for those films. Barrera remarked, “I’m just so grateful on...

You’d have to forgive Laura Franco (Melissa Barrera) for being a little out of sorts these days. In short order, she’s been: diagnosed with cancer, dumped by her douchebag boyfriend, undergone radical treatment, moved back into her childhood home, realized said douchebag boyfriend has also absconded with the musical they wrote together (and given away the part literally made for her!), and discovered that the monster she thought she imagined in her youth is still very much alive and very much living in her closet (and played by the charming Tommy Dewey).
Filmmaker Caroline Lindy makes her feature directorial debut with “Your Monster,” but it’s a story she’s told before, both in life and on the screen.
Lindy’s passion for and connection to the material is obvious (how could it not be?), as is her desire to twist a sad story into something fresh and often funny.

It’s probably safe to say that Your Monster is the only film ever to score a sex scene to Jimmy Durante’s raspy voice singing, “I could turn the gray skies to blue, if I only had you.” Caroline Lindy’s first feature (based on her short) is a singing, dancing, skewed comic take on rom-coms, heartbreak, rebounds and revenge. Full of affection for big Broadway-style tunes, with a heroine whose dream man is soft-hearted but also not human, it is a sharp, witty confection.
Laura Franco (Melissa Barrera), a would-be actress, is in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery when her boyfriend breaks up by text. As we see in the opening sequence, she howls and weeps, but even as she’s being wheeled out of the hospital, we hear Dick Van Dyke cheerfully singing “Put on a Happy Face” from the original Broadway cast album of Bye Bye Birdie.

“I’m just so grateful on what I got to infuse in the franchise, and that’s something I’ll be proud of forever,” Melissa Barrera told Deadline at Sundance tonight, indicating no bad blood after being severed from the Scream series by Spyglass Media last month.
Barrera has clearly moved on, and she has a new horror movie here in Park City in the Midnight section, Your Monster from Caroline Lindy. In the pic, Barrera plays a soft-spoken actress, who finds her voice again after she meets a terrifying, yet weirdly charming Monster living in her closet.
Spyglass dropped Barrera from Scream VII after she reignited the franchise with Jenna Ortega in Scream V and Scream VI (the latter the highest grossing stateside in the horror series at $108M) due to remarks on social media about the Israel-Hamas conflict. The actress days after the firing broke her silence on the studio’s maneuver saying,...

Early in director Kore-eda Hirokazu’s Monster, single mother Saori (Andô Sakura) and her son, Minato (Kurokawa Sôya), watch from their apartment’s balcony as a fire engulfs a building across the way, the plumes of smoke rising up and up and up. Minato balances his arms on the ledge, his feet stuck in the gaps between the vertical rods of the balcony. From behind, we see him lean out, trying to get nearer to the flames from so far away, but his mother grabs him from behind and tells him to be careful to not go over the edge.
That’s not unlike what watching Monster feels like, as it constantly veers precariously between the realms of gentle humanism and contrived sentimentality. Monster is Kore-eda’s third film after his 2018 Palme d’Or-winning Shoplifters, which found a perfect calibration between his humane and tender sensibility and a kind of crowd-pleasing earnestness.

“The Nun II” has set a streaming release date on Max just in time for Halloween weekend. The New Line horror sequel will hit Max on Friday, Oct. 27 so those looking for a new horror movie to watch before the spooky holiday will be in luck.
