1965 Abitur. 1965 to 1968 Bookseller. 1970 to 1976 studied theology at Martin Luther University, Halle-Wittenberg; graduated with diploma.
1976 to 1990 Pastor at the district pastorate for hospital chaplaincy, Halle/Saale. 1980 to 1990 presidency of the district synod Halle, 1988 to 1990 deputy superintendent, 1990 degree as supervisor of pastoral psychology.
Since 1981 active in the peace movement. In October 1989 co-founder of the SDP in Halle/Saale. December 1989 to May 1990 moderator of the Round Table of the city of Halle/Saale. 1990 to 1992 City Councilor and Vice President of the City Council in Halle/Saale. Since 1993 chairwoman of the SPD city association, 2002 to 2004 deputy state chairwoman of the SPD Saxony-Anhalt.
Member of the Bundestag since 1990; 1991 to 1998 spokeswoman of the SPD parliamentary group for family affairs, senior citizens, women and youth, 1992 to 2002 member of the SPD parliamentary group executive committee and 1998 to 2002 chairwoman of the committee for family affairs, senior citizens, women and youth; October 2002 to November 2005 Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.
