Exclusive: Former Women in Film president Cathy Schulman, now president/CEO of Welle Entertainment, doesn’t only talk the talk but is walking the walk about getting more female-strong projects into the pipeline. The executive and producer has been on a buying spree of late, acquiring six new, female-facing IP titles which are being developing for both film and TV — one with Gabrielle Union.
They come in the form of five books and one play. In the list of female-oriented projects, Welle Entertainment has first acquired the rights to two novels that will be developed into feature films:
The Idea of You, an erotic drama with Gabrielle Union (Being Mary Jane) producing through her production company I’ll Have Another along with Robinne Lee, Eric Hayes and Jeff Morrone, which is about a 39-year old mom in Los Angeles who takes her daughter to meet her favorite boyband, and in...

Exclusive: Oscar winning producer Cathy Schulman (Crash) and former NBCUniversal TV Entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin and his Gaspin Media have acquired the rights to Jennifer Miller and Jason Feifer’s just-published novel Mr. Nice Guy, to develop for television.
Fresh Off The Boat co-executive producer Laura McCreary will pen the TV adaptation for the half-hour dramedy series. Schulman will produce via her Welle Entertainment with Gaspin and Tony Sabistina through Gaspin Media. Schulman and Gaspin are preparing to take the project to potential buyers immediately.
Real-life husband and wife authors Miller and Feifer served as inspiration for the dramedy. It centers on Carmen and Lucas, a pair of magazine writers who unknowingly work for the same publication when they have a one-night stand. Their subsequent individual reviews of the encounter go viral, so they decide to continue the relationship and write weekly dueling columns reviewing each other’s performance in bed.

Boardwalk Empire, “Devil You Know”
Written by Howard Korder
Directed by Jeremy Podeswa
Aired October 12, 2014
After four seasons of deliberately paced, character-based storytelling, Boardwalk Empire wasn’t going to change its approach in its final truncated season. Instead of introducing new intrigues or foes, the series used much of its time to reflect on the paths that brought Nucky and the other main characters to this point and to say an extended goodbye to the people and world of the show. With Nucky facing off against well known historical figures, an air of doom pervades much of the final episodes before they reach their poetic, but inevitable conclusion. More intriguing is the antepenultimate episode, “Devil You Know”, which says goodbye to two of the series’ most colorful characters and powerful actors, Michael Shannon’s George Mueller/Nelson Van Alden and Michael K. Williams’ Chalky White. Shannon’s intense and frequently...

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Season 2, Episode 4, “Halloween 2”
Written by Prentice Penny
Directed by Eric Appel
Airs Sundays at 8:30pm Et on Fox
“Halloween II” has the tough job of having to live up to the standards of Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s first season classic, “Halloween,” which featured an audacious bet, where Jake bargained a week of overtime to get the captain to do a pile of paperwork for him (and he won). This time around, Peralta ups the stakes and offers to do five weeks of unpaid overtime if he can’t steal Holt’s watch by midnight. But If he fails, Jake has to work a whopping five weeks of overtime with no pay. After a quick analysis, Captain Holt shakes on it. Sequels are rarely better than its predecessor and rarely does a sequel meet the expectations of devoted fans. “Halloween II” isn’t as strong as the original,...

Laura McCreary isn't a household name -- not yet. But she's well on her way. Currently a staff writer on Fox's Golden Globe-winning comedy "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," McCreary got her start writing for children's programs before moving on to animated primetime and live-action. Her steady move forward speaks to her knowledge of the industry and, more importantly, her comedic talents. McCreary has even received two Emmy nominations, one as an executive producer on "American Dad" when it earned a Best Animated Program nod in 2012. Last week, McCreary took a few minutes to sit down with Indiewire and outline her path from student filmmaker to staff writer on an award-winning network sitcom. Could you just talk a little bit about your educational background and where you started off in "the biz?" Sure. So I sort of had tunnel vision as a kid. I always wanted to write for TV, and I was...

“We were super shocked," writer/executive producer Laura McCreary says about "Brooklyn Nine-Nine's" victory at the Golden Globes for Best Comedy Series. "The writers did not even have a party together. We were all just on our couches. Showrunners Dan Goor and Mike Schur and the cast were there at the ceremony. The rest of us were at home enjoying a nice Sunday evening. Then all of a sudden the texts were flying and everyone's calling. It was a huge shock." -Break- Join the lively 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' chat going on right now in Gold Derby's notorious message boards drop menu.) What elements of "Brookly...

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Season 1, Episode 5, “The Vulture”
Directed by Jason Ensler
Written by Laura McCreary
Airs Tuesdays at 8:30pm Est on Fox
This week Brooklyn Nine-Nine continues to establish its footing and provides entertainment for audiences through its silly nature. The opening out of context scenes continue to deliver as they grow more ridiculous each week. “The Vulture” is a strong episode for a number of different reasons, the most important being the way it utilises all of the characters. Another reason this episode is so entertaining is its strong use of character development throughout. Each week Brooklyn Nine-Nine continues to focus on the lessons Jake is discovering and this week he learns the importance of teamwork. This is something that can be seen in a number of work-based sitcoms but Brooklyn Nine-Nine does a good job of constructing it uniquely and creatively.

Exclusive: American Dad executive producer Nahnatchka Khan is emerging as the comedy star of this buying season with a second half-hour project that sparked heated bidding. A month after Fox won the bidding war for her single-camera family comedy Connected, ABC just landed Khan's relationship comedy Dealbreaker in a similarly competitive situation. Both projects are produced by 20th TV where Khan is under an overall deal. Khan will co-write Dealbreaker, which landed a premium script commitment with penalty from ABC, with American Dad writer Laura McCreary. It is based on the blog by comics Dave Horwitz and Marisa Pinson and their recent book of the same name. The blog and the book are described as a "hilarious reference guide to the qualities that, when discovered, transform the 'date you hope to go home with' into the 'date you pray never calls again'" and as a catalogue of characteristics that serve...
