The 44th edition of the Festival du Nouveau Cinema has just announced their entire lineup and it’s pretty insane! The festival which takes place in Montreal from October 7 to 18 is screening nearly 400 films and events in only 11 days. This includes 151 feature films and 203 short films from 68 countries – 49 world premieres, 38 North American premieres and 60 Canadian premieres. Give credit to the team of programmers: Claude Chamberlan, Dimitri Eipides Julien Fonfrède, Philippe Gajan, Karolewicz Daniel, Marie-Hélène Brousseau, Katayoun Dibamehr and Gabrielle Tougas-Frechette.

The generational catchall "millennial" may conjure prejudices of internet-weaned babies with Peter Pan complexes, but debut filmmaker Garrett Bradley's relaxed, impressionistic depiction of twentysomethings in New Orleans takes a microcosmic focus on the ambitions of the economically distressed. Inspired by conversations recorded with locals, and cast from posted flyers and Craigslist, this heavily improvised, vérité-textured drama relies more on atmospheric sights, abstractly layered sounds, softly percussive music, and slice-of-life distillations of class struggles than traditional narrative. The film screens at International Film Festival Rotterdam next week and centers on "a young vocalist who returns to New Orleans, but can't find her way around. Richard Linklater’s drama that follows the life of a boy from five to 18 is in contention for four prizes at the 24th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards by Ifp.
In addition to the competitive awards, Gotham Award Tributes will be given as previously announced to Tilda Swinton, Bennett Miller and Industry Tribute recipient Ted Sarandos of Netflix.
The nominating committee for the best actor category has voted a special jury award to Foxcatcher’s Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo and Channing Tatum for their ensemble work.
Voting will take place online from November 19-26. The winner of the Audience Award will be announced at the Gotham Awards Ceremony in New York on December 1.
