All dogs deserve to play fetch on the beach. But for Messi, who starred as Snoop in “Anatomy of a Fall,” getting to enjoy Venice Beach — as well as a business class trip to the Oscars nominee luncheon and lots of quality pets from Bradley Cooper and Billie Eilish — is the culmination of months of hard work with his trainer, Laura Martin Contini.
Every time we see a dog in a film, the goal is for them to look like they’re just doing their own doggy thing and responding to the characters in a genuine way; how could dogs not? But each action, from lying down to running after a ball (Messi’s favorite), requires specific preparation so that the canine actor is ready for their closeup.

This season’s Best Editing Oscar nominees (which are also nominated for Best Picture) all explore existential crises, which make them dramatically compelling and relatable. Four of the editors — Laurent Sénéchal (“Anatomy of Fall”), Kevin Tent (“The Holdovers”), Jennifer Lame (“Oppenheimer“), and Yorgos Mavropsaridis (“Poor Things”) — selected a pivotal scene or sequence that best showcases their work, telling IndieWire how the scenes explore rhythm and pace, character importance, and why it was so challenging to get right.
In Justine Triet’s gripping murder mystery, “Anatomy of a Fall,” Sénéchal delicately balances point of view through memory and imagination, as Best Actress nominee Sandra Hüller stands trial for the murder of her husband. Through this crucible, the novelist is forced to confront love, marriage, parenting, guilt, fear, regret, and ruthless ambition.

Snoop Dogg’s interested in expanding his circle of collaborators. “I’d love to do a song with Dolly Parton, can you hook that up?” Snoop told reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on February 14th, adding that “she brings it.”
The rapper and media personality was making a surprise appearance on a panel discussing NBC’s upcoming broadcast of the upcoming 2024 Olympics. Snoop had previously offered up commentary on the 2021 games alongside Kevin Hart, and NBC will be bringing him to Paris to provide live commentary on this year’s games as well.
The mention of Parton didn’t come out of nowhere, as the country (and now rock!) performer previously released her cover of Queen’s “We Are the Champions/We Will Rock You” during the summer of 2023 as a celebration of the upcoming Paris games. Dozens of Oscar nominees convened Monday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the annual luncheon celebrating their achievements. Teams from nominated films including “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Maestro,” “The Holdovers,” “Godzilla: Minus One,” “Past Lives,” “Poor Things,” “American Fiction” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” dined on vegan dishes including mushroom risotto — which might not have been to the taste of one of the event’s most popular guests, Messi, aka Snoop the border collie from “Anatomy of a Fall.”
AMPAS president Janet Yang reminded future Oscar winners to keep their speeches brief at the March 10 ceremony, applauding Javier Bardem’s 2007 speech for “No Country for Old Men” which clocked in at just 37 seconds. She also reminded the crowd about this year’s earlier start time for the ceremony, which coupled with the start of Daylight Savings Time, should make for an interesting day.

Martin Scorsese and Justine Triet, two of this year’s best director Oscar nominees, received the Santa Barbara International Film Festival‘s outstanding directors of the year award on Monday night.
The tribute, sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter, featured 30-minute, sit-down conversations with each of the honorees about their careers and journeys to their currently celebrated films, moderated by THR‘s Scott Feinberg.
Anatomy of a Fall director Triet was up first. She touched on originally meeting the film’s star Sandra Hüller 12 years ago, watching The Boston Strangler “40 times before shooting” the best picture nominee as inspiration and her reluctance to reveal how the project truly ends: “I think I will speak in 10 years.”
Of the secret recording storyline that is featured in both Anatomy of a Fall and her 2019 film Sibyl, she also revealed, “When I was a young girl, I had a bad habit to record but now no.

They didn’t show us the food, so we’ll have to settle with the celebs.
The academy held its annual nominees’ luncheon on Monday, and as usual, it climaxes with the starry snap of the season—the class photo. And a few things jump out when you compare it to last year’s pic.
Semi-circles are out and stadium seating is in, for one thing. Also, if they’ve changed the carpeting at the Beverly Hilton, we’ll never know—it’s been cropped.
Now, what does the eye see when we look at the photo? There’s Jon Batiste dead center of it all. The five-time Grammy-winner already has an Oscar for co-composing the Original Score to Disney/Pixar’s “Soul,” so he ought not to feel too bad when he (probably) loses this year’s Best Song award to Billie Eilish (who went full-Steven Van Zant with...

The Oscar nominees luncheon is always full of good vibes, a definite highlight of the season especially since those in the room have all made it this far — all Oscar nominated and getting to mingle not just with other nominees but also the large number of Academy voters on hand. Considering we are less than two weeks away from final voting beginning, it is also a chance for some to push AMPAS members to check out their films.
“Hopefully if you have seen my movie you will want to vote for it,” said one prominent executive to an Academy member Monday. “And if you aren’t going to see it, vote for it anyway,” they added.
And why not?

The 96th annual Oscar nominees luncheon gathered a vibrant crowd of celebrities, filmmakers and cinephiles at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
DeVon Franklin, a Board of Governors member, kicked off the event by announcing the roll call of attendees, starting with composer Laura Karpman of “American Fiction” and concluding with Robert Downey Jr., nominated for his supporting role in “Oppenheimer.”
Here are some of the key takeaways from the event.
Emma Stone and Bradley Cooper at the 2024 Oscars Nominees Luncheon.
The dog from “Anatomy of a Fall” stole the show.
The breakout star of the day was the lovable pooch from “Anatomy of a Fall.” Messi, the canine actor portraying Snoop in Justine Triet’s film, stole the hearts of nearly every nominee present. From Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera of “Barbie” fame to the musical sensation Billie Eilish, everyone seemed to be enchanted by the furry star.

Per tradition, the gathering of nominees from across the 23 Oscar categories — along with their plus ones, members of the Academy’s board of governors and a handful of journalists also in the room — took place in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton. Snoop plays a former sports star who takes on losing pee-wee outfit in a charming comedy that has more than a passing resemblance to Bad News Bears
When laconic rapper-turned-actor Snoop Dogg is called on to appear in a film, he more often than not plays himself or a version thereof – and so it goes again in this salty but ultimately very wholesome sports movie. There’s even a sly parallel between the character Snoop plays and the efforts he’s made in the real world setting up an American football league for kids. Yes, his thespian range may be pretty limited, but there’s no denying Snoop has a palpable onscreen charisma and a good sense of comic timing that director Charles Stone III skilfully directs around.

Everyone loves an underdog story. We love them as much as sports movies and precocious kids. The only other thing we love as much as those is profanity. When you combine those together, you have a tricky project that could be masterful, or it could be a disaster. Luckily, no one can drop an f-bomb quite like Snoop Dogg, and he does that in his latest film, The Underdoggs.
In the great tradition of The Bad News Bears, Little Giants, and Hardball, The Underdoggs stars Snoop as a washed-up former NFL wide receiver who has burned all the bridges in his career. With a chance to redeem himself by coaching a group of pee-wee football players in his hometown of Long Beach, Two Js encounters more than he bargained for, as coaching is much more than just standing around basking in your greatness. Two Js must also deal with all...

With the “big game” only a few weeks away, do you need some movie fuel for your football “fever”? Something brand new, I should say since most gridiron fans probably have their shelves stocked with Any Given Sunday, The Replacements, and Rudy. Well, Amazon has just the thing with a raucous comedy about a ragtag bunch of preteen misfits in peewee football, coached by a guy whose heart is slowly melted by them. Sounds like a variation of last year’s football, er soccer, and adult inspired by real events comedy set in American Samoa, Next Goal Wins. Yes, it’s a tried and true formula, but this flick has a twist in its casting, as the coach is played by rapper Snoop Dogg. He provides the “spark” (if you get my drift) and the inspiration for the movie’s title, The Underdoggs.

Michael Strahan isn’t averse to throwing a jab at a colleague, especially on the set of one of his favorite shows.
The 52-year-old appears regularly on Good Morning America, where he’s had playful banter with Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, and others.
Before landing on GMA, he started with Fox NFL Sunday to help present pre-game, halftime, and post-game coverage.
On the NFL program, his friends and co-analysts include Curt Menefee, Jimmy Johnson, Terry Bradshaw, and Howie Long.
A recent episode of Fox’s show featured hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg, who stars in the new Amazon Prime movie The Underdoggs.
Since the movie is about football and Strahan has worked with Snoop before, it’s no surprise the Fox NFL crew appears in the film.

If you have any doubt about exactly what you are in for with Snoop Dogg’s first-ever starring role in a mainstream movie, The Underdoggs, you won’t after seeing the disclaimer that pops up on screen at the start of the film.

Taking the inspirational sports movie template, then infusing it with so much weed and foul language that it deserves its own MPAA rating, The Underdoggs is a good example of what happens when Snoop Dogg steps into an otherwise familiar tween-age comedy to wreak havoc. The results, perhaps suprisingly, are far from disastrous and ultimately quite endearing, though parents should be forewarned of a movie that drops more f- and b-bombs than all the ordnance released during World War II.

The puckish appeal of Charles Stone III’s The Underdoggs, a new spin on The Bad News Bears, is apparent from its opening title card, which offers a warning that its R rating was well earned, that no child should watch it, and that, well, the kids you really have to worry about are the ones whose parents don’t allow them to watch R-rated films.
Snoop Dogg stars as Jaycen “Two Js” Jennings, a former high school football star whose clutch, single-handed catch during his senior-year championship game set him up for a career as a young NFL hotshot who, predictably, flamed out in a blaze of ignominy, hubris, and sativa. (His puff-don’t-pass signature end-zone dance makes it clear that the “two Js” of his nickname aren’t derived from his first and last names.) Justine Triet’s new film, which just picked up nominations for Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, and Director at the Oscars, as well as the Palme d’Or at Cannes last year, is a courtroom drama following a woman accused of killing her husband. The man in question was found dead after falling out of the window of their remote cabin. There were no witnesses. She says she didn’t do it. Did he fall? Did he jump? Or is she guilty? That’s for the court to decide in this fascinating character study that feels intense and real, and challenges the audience to do the work along with the jury.

What makes a great courtroom thriller? A mesmerizing and clever plot that draws viewers in immediately. Three-dimensional characters that keep you guessing if they are the guilty party and twists and turns that leave audiences gasping and gob smacked.
Justine Triet’s dazzling French thriller “Anatomy of a Fall” has all the qualities and then some that make it a classic of the genre. Since winning the Palme D’or last May, “Anatomy of a Fall” has continued its winning ways receiving several critics’ honors, as well as two Golden Globes, a Critics Choice honor and seven BAFTA nominations including best film, best director, screenplay and best actress for Sandra Huller’s powerhouse performance. Resident weed icon Snoop Dogg made headlines last year when he announced that he would be “giving up smoke,” devastating stoners everywhere. A week later, the rapper eased their fear when he revealed that it was all part of an elaborate brand deal with Solo Brands, which sells a smokeless fire pit. “I’m going smokeless — Solo Stove fixed fire,” he said at the time. “They take out the smoke. Clever.”
It was clever, but apparently not enough to make a difference in anyone’s pockets other than Snoop’s.

Sandra Hüller finds herself at the center of two of the most talked-about movies of the year: The German actor gets to show her range (and her facility with languages) in both Jonathan Glazer’s drama “The Zone of Interest” and Justine Triet’s legal thriller “Anatomy of a Fall.” Both premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where “Anatomy” won the Palme d’Or and “Zone” was awarded the runner-up Grand Prix prize. Now, with both films busy on the circuit, Huller stopped by Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast to discuss the passionate responses the very different films are getting. Listen below:
For most Americans, Hüller burst onto the scene with the 2016 comedy-drama “Toni Erdmann,” which was nominated for the Oscar for best foreign language film. Huller’s performance as the put-upon daughter of a prankster father earned rave reviews, and the actor says Hollywood took interest — but not for long.

Last month, Snoop Dogg announced in an Instagram post that he had decided to finally give up “smoke.”
The news startled fans that the infamous pot-head would even consider such an idea.
A black-and-white image of the rapper with his hands clasped together on the left side while the right side showed typed words: “After much consideration and conversation with my family, I’ve decided to give up smoke. Please respect my privacy at this time.”
His signature was placed underneath these words.
These posts also had the same caption: “I’m giving up smoke.”
Some fans who commented on these posts responded negatively to the Grammy-nominated artist’s decision. For instance, one user commented on the Instagram post stating that “my man Snoop giving up smoke is like Vin Diesel giving up ya family.”
In another post, the rapper put up another post showing a selfie and a caption...

Snoop Dogg has announced on social media that he is giving up his most well-known vice.
“I’m giving up smoke,” Snoop Dogg wrote on X and Instagram. “After much consideration & conversation with my family, I’ve decided to give up smoke. Please respect my privacy at this time.”
No reason was given for the abrupt decision, nor was it specified if the noted cannabis enthusiast is passing strictly on the cannabis puff-puff.
Some speculated that the 52-year-old Snoop may switch to cannabis edibles to preserve his lungs.
Snoop and cannabis have long been linked during his career, starting with his guest appearances on Dr. Dre’s 1992 album, “The Chronic.”
Like tobacco smoke, marijuana smoke irritates the lungs. It also contains levels of volatile chemicals and tar that are similar to tobacco smoke, raising concerns about risk for cancer and lung disease for heavy users.
