Detective Chief Superintendent George Gordon 'Moonraker' Smith was head of Scotland Yard's Special Branch at the time of the Portland Spy Ring arrests in London on 7th January 1961. Smith arrested civil servant's Harry Houghton and Ethel Gee as they handed over top secret naval information to Soviet Intelligence officer Gordon Lonsdale (Konon Trofimovich Molody). Smith then travelled to the Ruislip home of bookseller Peter Kroger and his wife Helen where they too were arrested for conspiracy to break the Official Secret Act. He led the arrests on behalf of MI5 - the Security Service - as they have no powers of arrest.
