It’s been about a decade since Twenty One Pilots came oozing out of Columbus, Ohio, with their resolutely Midwestern, amicably dystopian 2015 hit “Stressed Out,” an emo-rap-industrial-pop slab of sing-songy melancholy that touched enough of a nerve to catapult the previously unknown duo into Adele/Beyoncé echelons of chart success. Twenty One Pilots’ post-genre sound was well-timed for the full blossoming of the streaming era. Blurryface (the album that contained “Stressed Out”) went from reggae-lite to ukulele twerpiness to pop-punk to piano-pop to Edm. Adding some value amidst all the playlist-brained vertigo,...

Ben Folds is calling for those paper airplane song requests once again. The musician will embark on a massive US tour throughout 2024, and attendees will have the chance to request songs via throwing a paper airplane at him during the show.
Ben Folds initially embarked on his first “Paper Airplane Request Tour” in 2017, where he’d randomly select fan-requested songs from paper airplanes and perform them solo. His new US tour will feature the same concept, as he explains in statement: “The last time I did this on tour the response was overwhelming, with literally hundreds of paper airplanes with song requests being launched on cue from fans at the start of the second half of each of my concerts. It’s the purest, most low-tech form of engagement that creates a special bond with my audiences.”

More than 250 artists, including Billie Eilish, Green Day, Sia and Cyndi Lauper, signed a letter Thursday urging the Senate Commerce Committee to support a bill that would reform the ticketing system for live events.
The Fans First Act, which was initially introduced in December by Sens. John Cornyn, Amy Klobuchar, Marsha Blackburn, Peter Welch, Roger Wicker and Ben Ray Lujan, aims to address flaws in the current live event ticketing system. The bill hopes to increase transparency in ticket sales, protect consumers from fake or overpriced tickets, and hold those who engage in illegal ticket sale practices accountable.
“As artists and members of the music community, we rely on touring for our livelihood, and we value music fans above all else,” the letter said in part. “We are joining together to say that the current system is broken: predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate...

On his 93rd birthday, William Shatner has shared his humble dream for life after death on his new single, “I Want to Be a Tree.”
Like much of Shatner’s music, “I Want to Be a Tree,” finds him not so much singing, but waxing poetically, this time backed by instrumentation from Ben Folds and the National Symphony Orchestra, led by Principal Pops conductor Steven Reineke.

When writing about a legend who’s still working as a nonagenarian, it’s almost obligatory to include a line about how they are seemingly busier than ever. William Shatner, 92, may no longer be on set 12 hours a day for the roles that made him the first Comic-Con celebrity (Star Trek), or that transformed him into a late-career regular at the Emmys podium (The Practice, Boston Legal), but it’s difficult not to marvel at the pace at which he lives his life.

Conflict Week Two
Here for the long haul: We are approaching the two-week anniversary of the bloody Hamas massacre on Israel, and there is now a terrifying recognition that the region is in it for the long haul. This week has been about attempted damage limitation as Israel takes revenge on its attackers and Western nations rush to stem the flow of a crisis that is so far estimated to have claimed around 5,000 lives. Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have both visited, attempting to walk a tightrope in pledging their support for Israel while stressing the need for international law to be observed and innocent Palestinian lives to be spared. Billions, Season 7. Photo Credit: Mark Seliger/Showtime. One thing we’ve learned from the show Billions is that, apparently, the more money you have, the more you appreciate music. Not only has Billions used several iconic pieces of music as part of its soundtrack, but nearly all of the show’s key characters regularly have lines referencing songs or artists, and several artists have appeared (as themselves) on the show, including Metallica, Michael Bolton, Ben Folds, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, and indie darling Jason Isbell. The show’s creators, Brian Koppelman and David Levien, are big music fans themselves — Koppelman’s father was the “K” in ’90s label Sbk Records — and they spoke to us about the importance of finding the right music for the show. Ben Folds has unveiled What Matters Most, his first studio album in eight years. The project is out today, June 2nd via New West Records. To support the release, Folds has mapped out an extensive tour.
Folds has been making music since the ’80s, and in a statement, he said What Matters Most is the culmination of all those years of writing, recording, touring, and otherwise putting in his 10,000 hours. “There’s a lifetime of craft and experience all focused into this one record,” he explained. “Sonically, lyrically, emotionally, I don’t think it’s an album I could have made at any other point in my career.”
“I come from the vinyl era, and this perhaps more than any record I’ve made is a true album,” Folds continued. “There’s a very specific sequence and arc to each side, all building up to this almost surreal positive finale,...

“But Wait, There’s More,” the title of the opening track of What Matters Most, seems to suggest that, after an eight-year gap since the release of So There, Ben Folds still has something to say, and that the album might explore previously uncharted terrain for the singer-songwriter. But the song, which features a lovely piano melody and some Beach Boys-esque vocal harmonies, amounts to a relatively familiar reflection on aging and the passage of time—lyrical themes that Folds continues to mine for the majority of the album.
Throughout What Matters Most, tracks like “Kristine from 7th Grade” and “Fragile” attempt to make sense of the past and the existential crisis of middle age by examining difficult or failed relationships but too often feel trite or even patronizing. The latter finds Folds’s narrator chiding a “childlike” lover for being manipulative and abusive but offers no real insights into...

Ben Folds is just a love machine, but on his new single “Exhausting Lover,” he’s not too happy about it. Listen to the tongue-in-cheek new song below.
“Exhausting Lover” begins as something like a synth pop song before Folds’ spoken-word delivery — about a girl who just can’t stop having sex with him — gives way to a theatrical horn section. The artist paired his melodramatic new song with an equally facetious music video directed by Drunk History’s Derek Waters, in which Folds directs a musical all about the lover in question.
“This was my first foray into musical theater, and Derek’s, too. We both vow to actually go see a musical now,” Folds said in a statement. Waters added: “I always have and always will love Ben Folds. But now I have a deeper appreciation for him knowing we shared similar experiences in a Motel 6 with...

Bob Saget’s Wife Kelly Rizzo And ‘Full House’ Co-Stars Remember Comedian On Anniversary Of His Death
Kelly Rizzo penned a touching tribute to her late husband, Bob Saget, on Monday, honoring the first anniversary of the Full House star’s death. Several of Saget’s friends and former co-stars also chimed in with remembrances.
“One Year. Our hearts are so heavy,” Rizzo wrote. “How could I not have talked to or seen my loving husband in a whole year? The surreal-ness never subsides. I’ve accepted the reality long ago but it still seems unreal when I see photos or videos of him so full of life.”
Rizzo paired her caption with a montage of photos and videos of her and Saget together, often on vacation, exchanging hugs and kisses. The song “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds, was one of Saget’s favorites, according to Rizzo.

“Hi @elonmusk -today on the 1 year anniversary of Bob’s (@bobsaget) passing, I saw he’s no longer verified? My husband truly loved Twitter. Out of respect for his legacy, can something be done? Thank you kindly.,” she tweeted.
In a second tweet, Rizzo said, “And the only reason I’m addressing this at all is because I know Bob would be very bummed about this. He’d say ‘hey, if someone goes to see my page and all the jokes I’ve tweeted over the years, how will they know it’s for sure me!?'”

Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better. In the case of "The Wilds," things get way worse, like comically bad. The second season of the teen survivalist story, which hit Prime Video on May 6, shows the group fighting extreme physical and mental exhaustion while gradually uncovering the Dawn of Eve experiment that's the cause of their suffering. There's also the introduction of male castaways, unknowing participants of the Twilight of Adam program. Though both groups collectively rebel by the end, escape is not yet earned.
The cast similarly experienced successes and obstacles while filming the challenging season. Sarah Pidgeon, who plays Leah Rilke, and Reign Edwards, who plays Rachel Reid, spoke to Popsugar about bonding with their costars, shaping their characters, and shooting their most difficult scenes.
Pidgeon continues to portray the group's relentless whistleblower, but in season two, Leah questions her judgment as she experiences vivid hallucinations.

It’s time to celebrate the Earth, Charlie Brown!
“Peanuts” is back for a new Earth Day special on Apple TV+, titled “It’s the Small Things, Charlie Brown.” The program follows Sally’s bond with a special little flower on the baseball field that may spell disaster for the big game. For Charlie Brown and the team, it’s just the inspiration they need to make a positive impact on their environment.
On Thursday, the streamer released a trailer for the special, which also features an original song from Ben Folds. The sneak peek, which you can watch above, begins with the Peanuts’ baseball game getting interrupted by Sally, who is smack dab in the middle of the field talking to her favorite flower.
“Well, hello little flower. Do you ever feel like you just don’t fit in?” she ponders. “Small guys like us, we oughta stick together.

Regina Spektor’s music often involves a strong element of storytelling — think of the underworld journey of “Grand Hotel” or the hospital pep talk in “Firewood.” The singer-songwriter has also enhanced the storytelling of others, her Orange Is the New Black theme song “You’ve Got Time” being maybe the best-known example. Lin-Manuel Miranda enlisted her for his Hamilton Mixtape project, where she put a maternal spin on “Dear Theodosia” with help from Ben Folds. The list goes on.

This bounceback final season of You’re the Worst began with one of the series’ most effective off-format episodes, “The Intransigence of Love.” A parody of romantic-comedy tropes (particularly those popular in the Nineties, when much of the story-within-the-story took place), it didn’t even feature Gretchen and Jimmy until partway through, when we realized they were narrating this whole ridiculous story to a pair of baffled wedding planners.
