This morning, Suntup Editions has announced a fine press limited edition of the 1971 novel Hell House by Richard Matheson, featuring new exclusive material including an introduction by R.C. Matheson, a foreword by Mike Flanagan and afterword by Nancy A. Collins.
In his foreword, Flanagan reveals that had there been a third season of his ‘Haunting’ series for Netflix, it would have been an adaptation of Hell House!
Flanagan explains, “When I adapted Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House as a Netflix series, there was much talk about how to continue the Haunting anthology. We followed Hill House with The Haunting of Bly Manor, based on numerous ghost stories by Henry James. Had there been a third season, I wanted that season to be The Haunting of Hell House. Criterion gives this classic its first exposure on Region A Blu-ray! A new 4K remaster puts the story of a guy too tiny to escape from his own cellar in its very best light — Scott Carey’s combat with the spider is still a scary delight, with a newly-fixed imperfection. Criterion’s extras lean toward fan-oriented fare: Tom Weaver tops the stack with a fine commentary and we get good input from Ben Burtt, Craig Barron, Richard Christian Matheson, Joe Dante and Dana Gould — plus thoughtful liner notes by Geoffrey O’Brien. And don’t forget those excellent movie trailers narrated by a breathless Orson Welles. Robert Scott Carey should have his own statue in Los Angeles, like Rocky Balboa in Philadelphia.

Mick Garris, Joe Dante and David Slade are among the horror directors contributing to Nightmare Cinema, an entertaining anthology in the spirit of Garris’ Masters of Horror TV show. The stories themselves have a surprisingly high hit rate, but the film is let down by its poorly thought-out linking concept. The set-up is almost too simple, taking the title entirely literally. When random people walk past the well-lit-but-seemingly-abandoned Rialto cinema, they see their name appear on the marquee. Intrigued, they enter the cinema, where a creepy projectionist (Mickey Rourke as The Projectionist) shows them a film that features their death.

Writers: Sandra Becerril, Alejandro Brugués, Lawrence C. Connolly, Mick Garris, Richard Christian Matheson and David Slade. Horror fans might know director Mick Garris from his "Masters of Horrors" series. In 2005, several extended shorts were brought together, from the best in horror: George A. Romero, John Carpenter and Dario Argento. Garris brings some of his filmmaking friends together again, in Nightmare Cinema. Developed as a potential series, Nightmare Cinema brings five short films together, along with a wraparound. Mickey Rourke stars as the projectionist and he brings a series of characters into his supernatural theatre. Then, tales of stalkers, vanity, Catholic slaughter, a devolution into madness and a journey to limbo with: "The Thing in the Woods," "Mirari," "Mashit," "This Way to Egress,"...

Here we are: the first Masters of Horror episode from my favorite filmmaker of all time: the late, great Tobe Hooper.
Season 1, Episode 3: “Dance of the Dead”
Director: Tobe Hooper
Original Air Date: November 11th, 2005
One of the coolest things about the Showtime anthology series Masters of Horror is that, in addition to codifying who many of the genre “masters” were (though it didn’t cover all of them; there were no episodes directed by Wes Craven or George Romero or David Cronenberg or a handful of other greats), the series gave opportunities to filmmakers that had fallen somewhat out of the pop culture consciousness to remind fans that they still had it—they just had to be given the chance. Nowhere is this better exemplified than in the case of Tobe Hooper, who was something of a punching bag in the horror genre when his season 1 episode aired.

To celebrate the Blu-ray release of The Incredible Shrinking Man, available on Blu-ray from 13th November, we have a copy of the film on Blu-ray up for grabs, courtesy of Arrow Video!
Based on the novel by the massively influential sci-fi and horror writer Richard Matheson (I Am Legend, The Martian Chronicles), with a script adapted by Matheson himself, and directed by Fifties sci-fi king Jack Arnold (Creature From The Black Lagoon), this is rightly regarded as being one of the finest science-fiction films of all time, a critically-acclaimed smash hit that currently has a 90 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Genuinely thrilling, and, as Scott’s plight becomes more desperate, tense and gruelling, the film features superbly realised special effects that bely the era, and the setting Scott finds himself in – filled with oversized household objects that suddenly become threatening and dangerous – takes on a wonderfully surreal atmosphere.

A novella from Stephen King’s 2010 story collection, Full Dark, No Stars, Big Driver is a literary gut punch that takes an unflinching look at an atrocious crime committed on a lonely highway, and the relentless revenge that followed. This fall, Lifetime will take an uncharacteristic trip into horror lit with Big Driver, an adaptation of Stephen King’s same-named short story from his 2010 collection Full Dark, No Stars. Maria Bello stars in the grim and brutal pic, about an author who is brutally raped and assaulted by a truck driver, only to survive and return seeking vengeance.
The project is an unusual one for Lifetime, though the network has been branching out in recent years with increasingly dramatic original series like Witches of East End and The Lottery. Big Driver is also, like many of Lifetime’s programs, a tale of female empowerment led by a particularly steely protagonist.
Now, the suitably dark first trailer for the movie, which also stars Olympia Dukakis, Joan Gett, Ann Dowd and Will Harris, has arrived online. Check it out below, along with the official synopsis for the adaptation.

Add Big Driver, a short story in Stephen King’s 2010 collection Full Dark, No Stars, to the huge list of works by the living literary legend that are in the midst of being adapted to the screen. Lifetime just green-lit a television movie based on the story and has set A History of Violence actress Maria Bello to star.
Big Driver will center on a successful mystery novelist (Bello) who takes an ostensible shortcut on her way home from an engagement at a Chicopee, Massachusetts, library and falls into a trap set by a sinister trucker, who proceeds to brutally rape her and leave her for dead. After recovering from her injuries, the novelist uses the detective skills she picked up from writing mystery novels to track down and take revenge on the trucker and his accomplices.

I have just heard that Richard Matheson has passed on. Odds are, you are familiar with his work. He is the author of I Am Legend which spawned the self-titled (abomination) adaptation as well as The Omega Man and the Vincent Price The Last Man on Earth, which he adapted for the screen. Matheson was the writer of a lot of classic Twilight Zone TV episodes – most notably Nightmare at 20,000 Feet.
Richard Matheson passed on yesterday, June 23rd. He was 87. His daughter Ali, wrote the following:
My beloved father passed away yesterday at home surrounded by the people and things he loved…he was funny, brilliant, loving, generous, kind, creative, and the most wonderful father ever…I miss you and love you forever Pop and I know you are now happy and healthy in a beautiful place full of love and joy you always knew was there…

What do you mean you don't think 'Belgium' when you think 'horror'? Okay, fine, the nation known best for its monastic beer has never been much of a player in the horror scene but director Jonas Govaerts is looking to change that with Cub. Other Kingdoms: The Unedited Version by Richard Matheson; Gauntlet Press; 2011; 273 pgs; $50.00 Us Review by Dave Simms Richard Matheson can only be described as a true living legend. Like Bradbury and King, he turns everything he touches into gold. At the Bram Stoker Weekend three years ago, his son R.C. Matheson and he discussed in an intimate setting his body of work and its influence on readers worldwide. What did he want to talk about? New stories, and new adaptations of his stories for television and movies. For someone who has helped to shape so much of horror/suspense, helm much of the Twilight Zone, oversee highly successful movies, and have King state that Matheson is the reason he began writing,...

The Question of the Month has a simple premise: each month I'll ask a handful of the genre's top authors to answer the same question and then I'll publish their responses exactly as I receive them. In these posts you'll discover how today's best horror authors think, giving you insight into where their darkest tales come from. These responses are listed here in the order they were received. This month's question is: What is the future of horror? Writers in pain. Their wounds, unconscious or otherwise, define the genre. — R.C. Matheson I don't know what the future of horror will be, but I always live in hope that whatever it is, it'll be a bit more subtle,...

[1] Richard Matheson may not be a name that rings a bell, but chances are you're familiar with some of his works. Matheson is the author behind the source material for such films as I Am Legend (which has actually spawned three big-screen versions), What Dreams May Come, The Box, and this weekend's robot boxing picture Real Steel. Now the writer and his screenwriter son, R.C. Matheson, are looking to sell some 150 of the elder Matheson's stories, books, plays, and scripts for potential film and TV adaptations. More details after the jump. The Mathesons are looking to sell the properties under the condition that they be allowed to retain some creative control through the development process, including the opportunity to have a say in hiring of directors and screenwriters -- or even to write some of the scripts themselves. William Morris agent Alan Gasmer, who is helping to sell the stories,...

I spent several hours with Gene this morning. He wasn’t under the influence of any pain killers so he was lucid and jovial, but grew short of breath several times—and every now and again he’d grimace in pain. The attending nurse finally had no choice but to put him back on the morphine and that was it—Gene was fast asleep.
Despite his legendary optimism, Gene’s situation is tenuous. His family hopes he can undergo a procedure early this week that may alleviate his pain. Regardless, it’s unlikely that my pal will be drawing for anyone anytime soon.To continue generating what might become much-needed funds, we are selling off the last of Gene’s artwork, as well as some books and comics. I hear Cinemax is finalizing the deals for a 13-episode order to Chemistry, a half-hour dramedy for late night that is executive produced by CAA co-founder Bill Haber. Richard Christian Matheson and Norman Steinberg have written all 13 episodes of the series, about the complexity of the relationship between Liz and Michael, who have strong physical attraction bordering on erotic madness. The series, said to have overtones of Last Tango in Paris and an upscale, sophisticated Red Shoe Diaries, is executive produced by Haber and Jeff Hayes, with Matheson and Steinberg serving as co-executive producers. In anticipation of a series greenlight, Chemistry has already started casting. Cinemax has been making a big push in original programming with three recent primetime action series orders: Strike Back, The Transporter and The Sector. Back in the mid-80s, horror fiction had become more than a little complacent. In most people’s minds, what passed for cutting edge genre fiction was the work of word generators such as Stephen King, Dean Koontz, or Anne Rice. It was all spooky kids, rabid pets, daddy issues, and whiny, homo-erotic vampires.
By and large that was fine, but it is important to remember that the punk music scene had landed with both feet on the next of the public zeitgeist and stories of such archetypical monsters and mayhem didn't resonate with readers like they once did. The public had a new attitude and wanted a new breed of monsters to go with it...ones that better fit in line with their new nihilistic outlook.

I first became acquainted with Axelle Carolyn when she authored an article in Fangoria magazine and I was struck by her unusual name. At first I thought she had just flipped her names (I wasn’t aware at the time that “Axelle” is a Belgian/French female given name) and was really Carolyn Axelle. But as time went by and I actually worked with Axelle on several projects (and discovered that “Axelle” is a real girl’s name), I became one of her biggest fans. She has done it all and she’s only 30 years old – respected journalist, talented actor, stunning model and now she is a published horror fiction author. I want to be her when I grow up.

The lineup includes such heavy hitters as Neil Gaiman, Steve Niles, Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden, Mick Garris, Richard Christian Matheson, Sarah Langan, Mark Morris, Nancy Kilpatrick, Hellraiser sequel scripter Peter Atkins, Tim Lebbon, Nancy Holder, Yvonne Navarro, Kelley Armstrong and former Cenobite actor Nicholas (“Chatterer”) Vince. Edited by Paul Kane and Marie O’Regan, Hellbound Hearts will be unleashed September 29 by Pocket Books, just in time for the most frightful month of the year.
“Hellbound Hearts was originally an idea I ran past Clive a couple of years ago,” Kane tells Fango.
