Universal Pictures' Identity Thief starring Jason Bateman, Melissa McCarthy and Amanda Peet and Steven Soderbergh's Side Effects lead field this weekend at the box office, with 3,141 theaters for the comedy vs. 2,605 spots for the Open Road Films thriller. Identity Thief's directed by Seth Gordon, reuniting Bateman with the helmer of Horrible Bosses, with a cast also including John Cho, John Favreau, T.I., Genesis Rodriguez, Morris Chestnut and Eric Stonestreet. Expect a weekend total of over $20-25 million for the pic scripted by Craig Mazin (The Hangover Part II, and upcoming Part III) and Jerry Eeten. Side Effects is frontlined by a strong cast including Jude Law, Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones, which should power the film to around $10-12 million over the weekend. Scott Z. Burns and Steven Soderbergh collaborate once again after the winning Contagion and The Informant!
