Mark Boal has focused much of his energy as a screenwriter on interpreting the geopolitical dramas of our times in the Middle East and Central Asia. For his new Apple TV+ series “Echo 3,” the two-time Oscar winner who wrote and produced 2008’s “The Hurt Locker” and 2011’s “Zero Dark Thirty” has turned his gaze to the United States’ neighbors to the south.
The drama series, adapted from the 2018 Israeli series “When Heroes Fly,” revolves around a kidnapping of an American research scientist (played by Jessica Ann Collins) near the Colombia-Venezuela border and the rescue effort that ensues, led by her brother (Luke Evans) and new husband (Michiel Huisman) — both of whom work for a U.S. Army elite combat unit, aka special forces. “Echo 3” bowed Nov. 23 with three episodes, followed by weekly installments premiering on Fridays through the Season 1 finale on Jan. 13.

The desperate mission to save Amber (Jessica Ann Collins) continues on Echo 3 Season 1 Episode 6, airing Friday, December 16, on Apple TV+.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive first look at the pivotal episode, which shows Prince (Michiel Huisman) and Bambi (Luke Evans) plotting their next move.
Unfortunately, they know the net is closing, and their window to save Amber is closing.
They turn their attention to the sibling of someone associated with the people holding Amber captive, forcing them to question how far they will go to save her.
Bambi looks shocked as he hears Prince's thoughts on going after an innocent person if it means they return home with her.
Echo 3 has featured high-octane action since its premiere last month, and thankfully, that doesn't seem to be slowing down in the near future.

Plot: When brilliant scientist Amber Chesborough vanishes along the Colombia-Venezuela border, her brother and her husband—both elite U.S. Army commandos—struggle to find her amid a guerilla war, discovering that the woman they love might have a secret.
Review: Mark Boal has made a career out of telling military stories. From those grounded in true stories (Zero Dark Thirty) to those inspired by reality (The Hurt Locker), Boal has also transitioned to action-oriented blockbusters like Triple Frontier. His latest project is Echo 3, an international espionage thriller full of gritty action and military tactics that attempts to tell a sociopolitical drama full of heavy stuntwork and complicated storytelling. Despite some truly pulse-pounding firefights that rival any of his big-screen efforts, Mark Boal’s characters cannot rise to the same level of complexity as the action sequences. Echo 3 is decent but far from as good as it should, or could, be.

"How many lives are you willing to trade for your sister?" Apple has revealed an official trailer for a rescue thriller mini-series titled Echo 3, arriving for streaming this November on Apple TV+. Echo 3 is an "action-packed" series about a brilliant scientist kidnapped in Colombia, and her brother and husband who will stop at nothing to find her and bring her home. When Amber Chesborough goes missing along the Colombia-Venezuela border, these men with extensive military experience struggle to find her against the backdrop of a secret war. Echo 3 features Jessica Ann Collins as Amber, Luke Evans as Bambi (her brother), and Michiel Huisman as Prince (her husband), along with Martina Gusman, James Udom, Maria Del Rosario, Alejandro Furth, Juan Pablo Raba, and special guest star, Bradley Whitford. While this is supposed to be a wholesome, riveting story about saving family members, it's clearly a jingoistic reminder of America's imperialism and military attitude.

Some people deserve a second chance. Few deserve a third. Especially when we’re talking about having a modicum of human decency for the person you say you love. Yet that’s exactly what we’re asked to give Tj (Terrence Martin). From disjointed flashbacks leading to a sailing adventure on Easter Island, hopefully reigniting their marriage, we can glean he had one purely selfless and enjoyable period in his life: meeting Domi (Dominique Braun). As soon as he brought her into his chauvinistically materialistic family, however, that freedom to be in love disappears. Once his father (Ed Harris) puts his claws back into him, true happiness is replaced by manufactured social conditioning. And Domi, rightly, can’t stand it. It’s why she left in the first place.
Rather than be about Domi’s escape, the title to Braun and Martin’s latest as writer-directors looks to hit a...

Terrence Martin & Dominique Braun star, along with Ed Harris, Riley Smith, and Martina Gusman. At least there's a cool poster for this film (see below). For decades, Italy’s box office has suffered the summertime blues due to a scarcity of blockbusters from the Hollywood studios, which noted that Italian audiences were more interested in going to the beach than a movie theater. However, that is changing.
The Filming Italy Sardegna Festival, which runs June 13-16 and is Italy’s single start of summer event, is perfectly positioned to become a prime driver for this crucial seasonal push.
“I’ve been saying for years that summer festivals should promote summer releases,” says Tiziana Rocca, who launched the fest on the island of Sardinia in Italy last year.

Martina Gusman (Carancho) and Oscar nominee Bérénice Bejo (The Artist) are exceedingly well cast as loving sisters reunited when their wealthy father has a stroke in this sexy family melodrama from Argentina. The sisters are tight despite years of separation but they have dramatically different relationships with their mother (a commanding turn from Graciela Borges) who clearly favors one and disdains the other. Despite the capable and supremely sexy cast and a few witty visual moments and firecracker scenes, the movie is a mixed bag. The character arcs don't fully land given the erratic quality of the screenplay.
And I'm not one to normally harp on "the male gaze," a triggering complaint now so frequently overused it's beginning to lose meaning, but here we have a textbook example...

The Notebook is covering Tiff with an on-going correspondence between critics Kelley Dong and Daniel Kasman. Our BodyDear Danny, For me, one of the jarring components of a film festival is that temperatures are continually in flux, not only outside—it is much colder this week, as I'm sure you know—but also inside the theatre, where I go from one warm movie to a very cold one multiple times a day. I envy that you have seen, at very least, some of the finer genre films here; I myself have been seeing mostly blockbusters, with the occasional arthouse film of relatively smaller scale. But speaking of art cinema: To celebrate the centenary of Ingmar Bergman's birth, Tiff Cinematheque showed its 35mm print of his Persona at a free public screening, just one of an abundance of events offered here outside of the scheduled programming. Since its 1966 release, the...

After bringing his international sensation The Clan to Tiff in 2015, Argentine auteur Pablo Trapero is back at the festival this week with his latest family drama, The Quietude. Marking his fifth collaboration with spouse Martina Gusman, the film examines the complicated, intimate relationship between two sisters (portrayed by Gusman and Oscar nominee Bérénice Bejo), living on separate continents, who are reunited when their father suffers a stroke.
While the visually kinetic film is, first and foremost, “a female portrait of two sisters,” it is notably set against the backdrop of a bloody military dictatorship in Argentina’s past—a past which lingers continuously in the memory of those who lived through it decades ago, but has “nothing to do with [the] reality” of younger generations. “This movie, it’s [portraying] the past in different ways, and different layers of the past. This reencounter is not only about these two sisters, but about...

Title: La quietud (The Quietude) Director: Pablo Trapero Cast: Bérénice Bejo, Martina Gusman, Edgar Ramirez, Joaquín Furriel, Graciela Borges. ‘La quietud’ (The Quietude) is an intimate film about the female universe and sisterhood. Title notwithstanding, “The Quietude” offers little respite. Pablo Trapero’s family melodrama stars Bérénice Bejo and Martina Gusman as sisters whose endlessly complicated relationship proves that blood, though thicker than water, isn’t always enough to keep people together. La Quietud is the name of the family ranch outside Buenos Aires where they reunite after years apart; though beautiful, the homestead doesn’t exactly live up to its serene moniker. Dogs roam and birds sing on the rural estate but, like many places suffused with family memories, it contains as much sadness as joy — and, lately, much more of the former.
Both sisters are introduced the same way: from behind, the camera focused on their hair as they enter a building where something of great consequence will befall them. They’re very much two sides of the same coin, resembling each other so uncannily you may find yourself looking up...

Argentine-born actresses Berenice Bejo (The Artist) and Martina Gusman (Leonera) could almost pass for twins in Pablo Trapero’s daringly modern The Quietude (La Quietud), set on the sprawling ranch of a wealthy family with many skeletons in the closet. When a family emergency brings everybody back home, old relationships are resumed and unresolved tensions explode. The winking, rather perverse sexual chemistry between the two charismatic lead actresses, who play sisters (though not twins), is one of the film’s main attractions.

Pablo Trapero is a director we always have on our radar. The filmmaker behind “Carancho,” “White Elephant,” and the crime flick “The Clan” has been on a steady rise on the festival and arthouse scene, and he’s assembling what could be his starriest and biggest project yet.
Martina Gusmán, Bérénice Bejo, Edgar Ramírez, Graciela Borges, and Joaquín Furriel have signed up for “La Quietud.” The film will tell the story of two sisters who must face the past, with the narrative set against the backdrop of Argentina’s military dictatorship expropriating real estate belonging to murdered detainees.

Pablo Trapero's bruising and intense Carancho (2010) remains high on my list of personal favorites, but he's also made Rolling Family (2004) and Lion's Den (2008) and, more recently, White Elephant and The Clan. Now his next film is ready to roll. Martina Gusmán (Lion's Den) and Bérénice Bejo (The Artist) will star in Trapero's La Quietud, according to Variety. It's described as "an intimate family drama turning on two sisters' reencounter and attempt at closure on a common troubled past." The cast includes Edgar Ramirez, Graciela Borges and Joaquín Furriel. It's set to begin shooting next month in Buenos Aires. Visit Variety to read more about the story behind the film as well as Trapero's intentions....

Film noir. What is it? What are its defining characteristics? What films best express its qualities? Sex appeal, violence, cynicism, anti-heroes, femmes fatales, bleak commentary on modern society, maddening twists of fate that perpetuate one’s misery, running away from danger yet never making any ground…noir is and represents a wide variety of things, so much so that film experts do not even agree on whether it is a genre unto itself. (Two of the leading voices, James Ursini and Alain Silver, agree that it represents a movement rather than a definable genre.) For well over two years now, Sound on Sight has hosted the Friday Noir column which, on a near-weekly basis, has covered a great many noir entries of the commonly recognized classic period (1941 to 1959) as well as sizable portion of neo-noirs. Slowly and steadily, the column has explored the extremely exhaustive catalogue of titles with still many to come.

Beware of Mr Baker; White Elephant; Reality; Jack the Giant Slayer; The ABCs of Death
Jay Bulger's boisterous rock-doc Beware of Mr Baker (2012, Curzon, 15) opens with the infamously cantankerous drummer Ginger Baker striking the director hard across the nose with a cane, drawing blood. The rest of the movie is interspersed with Baker regularly telling Bulger that he's an idiot. This would be more problematic were it not for the fact that, with very few exceptions, Baker seems tirelessly hostile to everyone. No wonder his closest associates – friends, family, band members – struggle to find anything nice to say about him, with Jack Bruce's assessment that "he's the best Ginger Baker in the world" coming as close as it gets to a personal endorsement.
Only on the subject of his drumming is there agreement that he's a genius, which is fitting, since the sole quality that Baker appears to...

Pablo Trapero once again plunges audiences into the life on the fringes of Buenos Aires, with his follow up to Carancho, and his latest feature White Elephant is a compelling, but flawed, drama.
The title takes its name from the shell of a former hospital that dominates the downtown slums of the Argentinean capital. Surrounding this redundant hollow structure are a maze-like network of streets, where, among the poorest of the city, lives Father Julian (Ricardo Darrin). On a daily basis Julian battles corrupt politicians, interfering police and violent gangs, all in the effort to help the needy. When he discovers he is suffering from a terminal illness, Julian, calls upon a young, headstrong Catholic priest Father Nicolas (Jeremie Renier) to take over his work.

Iron Man 3 | The Look Of Love | Bernie | Scarecrow | In The Fog | The Lords Of Salem | The ABCs Of Death | White Elephant | I Love New Year
Iron Man 3 (12A)
(Shane Black, 2013, Us) Robert Downey Jr, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Rebecca Hall. 130 mins
Fears of post-Avengers superhero blowout fatigue are briskly swept away by Marvel's latest epic, whose snappy, poppy script packs in twists and quips between the bludgeoning (but technically seamless) action. It's Kingsley's Bin Laden-esque Mandarin and Pearce's creepy scientist who are out to de-swagger Tony Stark this time round, but there are surprises in store for everyone.
The Look Of Love (18)
(Michael Winterbottom, 2013, UK) Steve Coogan, Anna Friel, Imogen Poots, Tamsin Egerton. 101 mins
Despite the Soho excess, the retro kitsch, the racy subject matter and the great cast, this biopic of Britain's pornographer-in-chief Paul Raymond somehow never feels like it's telling the full story.

It isn't clear where the focus lies in Pablo Trapero's drama about priests trying to save a sprawling Buenos Aires slum
The Argentinian film-maker Pablo Trapero has always brought muscular confidence and flair to his work, and White Elephant is no exception, a movie about faith and hope to which the new papal election has given an arrowhead of relevance. It is set in the Villa Virgin barrio, the toughest shantytown in Buenos Aires, a grim place dominated surreally by the gigantic ruined TB hospital built in the 1930s; now a deserted wreck and cathedral of poverty known as the "white elephant" where the homeless camp and drug-dealers ply their trade. (It looks, to me, creepily like the Ceaușescu presidential palace in Bucharest.) Two priests work tirelessly to help the people there: Father Julián (Ricardo Darin) and his new younger Belgian colleague, Father Nicolás (Jérémie Renier), who believes in actively mediating drug wars.

Critically acclaimed, foreign movie White Elephant was an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival, as well as others.
The drama film stars Ricardo Darin (The Secret in Their Eyes) and Jeremie Renier (Atonement) as Julian and Nicolas, priests working to help the local poor people in the slums of Buenos Aires. Julian is working hard to build a hospital, and Nicolas joins the project after another project he was working on failed when paramilitary forces killed members of the community.
Troubled, Nicolas finds peace with Luciana (Martina Gusman, Carancho), an atheist social worker. As his beliefs wane, tension and violence grows between drug-dealing cartels in the slums, and when a ministerial decree stops work on the hospital, the faith of the community is tested.

Sisyphus Complex: Trapero’s Latest Argentinean Melodrama Ironically Titled
Argentinean auteur Pablo Trapero returns with his latest, White Elephant, the last in what caps a trilogy depicting dire straights in Buenos Aires. With wife and muse Martina Gusman along for the ride, fellow countrymen and star Ricardo Darin, who also appeared in Trapero’s last film, 2010’s Carancho, returns for duty. And for a little international flavor, Belgian star Jérémie Renier provides us with an intriguing presence as leading man and protagonist. Trapero, insisting on showing us the degrading underbelly of Buenos Aires, doesn’t shy away here, but somehow doesn’t manage to strike any resonating moments with a somewhat predictable and calculated exploration of two slum priests involved with a housing project filmed in an actual slum.
Father Julian (Ricardo Darin) is desperately working on a housing project in the slums, located in close proximity to the rich and affluent district.

Ricardo Darin, Jeremie Renier and Martina Gusman star in the story of two priests trying to help the people in Buenos Aires shantytowns and slums amid rampant drug-war violence. “White Elephant” had its world premiere at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard sidebar, and it has its North American premiere Thursday in Toronto. Strand’s Marcus Hu negotiated the deal with Carole Baraton of Wild Bunch. Strand has recently released “Unforgivable,” “Oslo, August 31st” and “My Worst Nightmare.” Forthcoming titles include “Yossi” and...

Ricardo Darín brings presence and authority to this heartfelt if slightly muddy film about priests tackling drug gangs in a Buenos Aires slum
The title of Pablo Trapero's new film is the nickname given in Argentina to the colossal ruins of what was once intended to be a tuberculosis hospital, built in the 1930s and long since abandoned. It is now a wrecked cathedral of poverty and despair in the "Villa Virgin", the toughest shantytown in Buenos Aires; here is where the poor and the homeless take refuge and where the drug dealers ply their trade and make recruits. The shots of this hideous yet weirdly fascinating building make it look the Ceausescu presidential palace in Bucharest.
The movie takes as its starting point the real-life case of Father Carlos Mujica, a priest and Marxist activist who in 1974 was shot dead, evidently by a gunman working for an anti-communist group.

Critics must look to their laurels as audience reviews are used to sell films, while rising star Adam Deacon is rumoured to be pushing for a sequel to Anuvahood
Who needs critics?
The two films slugging it out for supremacy at the top of the UK box office have completely ignored the usual critics' quotes on their posters. Instead, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, starring Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, and The Woman in Black, with Daniel Radcliffe, have plastered full-page newspaper ads with reviews from – aargh – the general public. Both films received mixed reviews from critics (after all, both were Ok, with clearly solid commercial prospects but neither was of the highest artistic endeavour) but have been ecstatically endorsed by audiences. Of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, the poster quotes gushed: "British film at its best… Whoever you are, go and see this film," says Sheena, 55, from Pudsey, West Yorkshire.

There are 8,000 deaths and 120,000 people injured on Argentinian roads every year. The statistics are worse, I'm told, in some other countries and insurance companies are being shaken down all round the world. But apparently in deeply corrupt and unjust Argentina a sizable industry has grown up to exploit these accidents, involving the victims, relatives of the dead and maimed, lawyers, the medical profession and the police. This is the background to the latest movie by Pablo Trapero, one of the leaders in the recent resurgence of Latin American cinema.

Opening with some scary statistics about the high rate of traffic accidents in Argentina, Carancho then introduces two people who, in very different ways, work with the victims of those accidents. Martina Gusman is a young paramedic who scrapes them off the pavements of Buenos Aires and into ambulances every night. The other, Ricardo Darin, chases those ambulances. Darin, the eagle-nosed, hamster-cheeked star of The Secret In Their Eyes, is a lawyer who specialises in compensation claims. His clients are grateful for the money, not realising that Darin's company pockets 80 per cent of it. Carancho translates as "The Vulture".
