A Merry Zombie Xmas
December 24, 2020 – January 7, 2021
In a world where the 3 Bs are edging towards massive mainstream success, and an age when all things “K” are synonymous with “crazy, sexy, cool”, another phenomenon has been going viral and global: the zombie movie “made in Korea”.
Filmmakers from the peninsula have injected new life in the undead genre, bringing both a bit of a Midas and Lazarus touch to a mythology that has been exploited almost to death. Original storylines spanning wildly diverse settings, from the Joseon era to our troubled times and even dark Mad Max-style dystopian futures, in-depth character development, and a clear-eyed look at today’s societal fears have raised the biters back from the realm of putrid pop fiction.
As the holiday season approaches, it’s time to celebrate the reinvigorated genre, powered by the...

South Korea came relatively late to the zombie-cinema sweepstakes, making up for lost time most notably with 2016’s “Train to Busan,” which has already generated a sequel. Nonetheless, “Zombie for Sale” As in those films, things here center on a somewhat hapless lower-class nuclear unit who get going when the going gets outlandishly tough.
Lee Min-jae’s debut feature finally sees distribution on these shores — amid a different kind of viral contagion crisis — nearly a year and a half after its home-turf premiere, during which time it has opened in other Asian territories and played festivals primarily as “The Odd Family: Zombie on Sale.” Amiably slow to gear up toward a satisfying action climax, this endearing zom-com is making its simultaneous U.S. and U.K. commercial debut as part of cult-cinema-minded Arrow Video Channel’s July programming slate in both subscription territories.

Also known as “The Odd Family: Zombie On Sale”, Zombie For Sale, released through Arrow Video a couple of weeks ago, is a zombie horror comedy with elements of romance tossed in for good measure. If you’re thinking, however, “oh no, not another zom-rom-com” then think again, because this isn’t a run of the mill romance with zombies. It has plenty of original and unique things going on to make it very different from anything else you would have seen in the genre, and it makes for an absolute joy of a film.
I was unsure what to expect when I went into this one, but in the end I found myself thoroughly besotted with it. It’s hilarious, cute, charming and looks delightful too. The cast throw themselves, feet-first, into...

The Glasgow Film Festival is nearly upon us, which means that cool news is starting to drop. Scotland's most prestigious film event is also home to the genre-friendly FrightFest Glasgow programming strand, where the UK's premier genre event shares the wealth with it's northern brothers. Among the many gems in the program is director Lee Min-Jae's 2019 horror comedy, Zombie For Sale, previously known as The Odd Family: Zombie On Sale. I saw the film as a part of Fantasia last summer, and it is a really great time with a few novel new ideas sure to please horror fans who've found the zombie subgenre to be overexposed. Arrow Video, the film's Us/Can/UK distributor released a brand new poster image for the film along with the...

Human Bio, the largest pharmaceutical company in Korea conducts illegal experiments on humans. One test goes wrong, and results in the creation of a twentysomething zombie. The creature escapes, and encounters an odd family named Park in a remote countryside. When their father is bitten, they discover that one of the symptoms is a fountain of youth. This leads to profiting off the zombie’s bite, and repercussions for those who take advantage of it. Meanwhile, the youngest Park daughter has a crush on “Jongbie” (as she nicknames him), and is the only one that really protects him.
