That idea is now a reality with a new version of the song titled “Our Problem” commemorating the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade and featuring a diverse, multi-generational cast. Cyndi Lauper, Angie Stone, K.Flay, Lilly Hiatt, Linda Perry, Morgane Stapleton, Nona Hendryx, Peaches, and Valerie June all sing on the track.

Now in its 43rd year, the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala is famously the music industry’s hottest ticket, an invite-only affair held the night before the Grammy Awards and loaded with the kind of A-list guest list that only Davis could assemble. Organized by Davis with his son, attorney Doug Davis, it’s legendary as a platform for exclusive superstar performances — over the past few years we’ve seen everyone from Mary J. Blige to Barry Manilow sing — and also a rite of passage for younger artists ranging from Chance the Rapper to Alicia Keys. At last year’s event, Jay-z was the honoree (and was feted with a solo medley of his hits delivered by Keys) and Davis announced that Jennifer Hudson had signed on to star in a forthcoming biopic on Aretha Franklin. Hudson then delivered a medley of Franklin’s hits before the singer herself, who was...

Watching this week’s season finale of R&B Divas felt sort of like watching The Lion King. One moment it’s all Hakuna Matata! You’re singing with your friends and loving life! And then you realize Scar has killed your dad and everything is horrible! Except Scar is in the form of Nicci Gilbert!
Let’s start with the Hakuna Matata stuff, which is alllll Monifah and Terez. We start off the episode in Monifah’s living room with Terez, who’s finally down from New York. But only we know that she brought a ring with her this time, what whaaaat. Terez suggests taking a day trip while she’s visiting, mayhaps to her hometown of Chattanooga. Mo is thrilled.
When they arrive in the Volunteer State, Terez takes her to one of her favorite places, the Tennessee Aquarium. As Mo tells the camera,...

Let’s do a quick recap of what we’ve seen of Nicci Gilbert on R&B Diva over the last two years.
Season 1: Repeatedly makes a point of how music doesn’t speak to her anymore; spends most of her time on other business ventures like the fashion line Curvato.
Season 2: Seems slightly back into music but honestly I don’t know that much about it because she spends most of her time fighting with Syleena and causing drama about a possible divas tour which she does not want to do.
The Last Two Episodes: Very suddenly getting Brownstone back together. Because Michael Jackson believed in them! Wants all the divas to sing together like they’re all perfectly happy singing sisters.
I know we don’t get to see everything that happens off screen on a reality show, but I feel...

Phew, was there a lot that went down in this week’s episode! Some good, some bad, some drama filled, some hopeful. I can’t believe there’s already been six episodes this season—it feels like we’re only getting started! But this episode also felt like a turning point of where things might be headed for the rest of the season.
We begin with everyone minus Syleena and Faith gathering at Monifah’s apartment, to help fill in Angie Stone and Latocha about how "Divas Simply Singing" went down last week. When Angie hears about the divas coming on stage to support Nicci during her breakdown, she once again is moved by a “we can do this tour as sisters” spirit. She says, “I firmly believe women can work together.” Hallelujah.
We then move on to Syleena, who’s at a gym where...

You guys. This episode. Oh lawd, just prepare yourself for this episode.
It begins in the Atl where all the divas meet for lunch. Faith informs the group that they’ve been invited by Sheryl Lee Ralph (of the original broadway cast of Dreamgirls) to all perform at "Divas Simply Singing," a benefit concert in La for raising HIV/AIDS awareness which is going on its 22nd year. While Latocha and Angie Stone can’t make it, all of the original divas are on board and begin packing their bags. And when I say packing their bags, we’re talking clothes, three ounce bottles of lotion, and a whoooole truckload of emotional baggage.
Get ready for some real talk about AIDS, kids.
Let’s start with Monifah. As she prepares her fabulous purple suitcase, she talks on the phone with Terez. We learn that her brother,...

This week with the divas, we slowly inched our way back to an atmosphere of sisterly love and support after the drama overload of last week. Slowly. We also got to see a spotlight on our girl Monifah, which is always more than welcome. The episode begins with Mo over at Latocha’s house, where Mo invites her to New York for the showcase she’s putting on for her birthday. Not only is it her sort of reintroduction to the musical world as who she is now, it’s the first time she’s played a show in New York, her hometown, in over ten years. As the official title of this episode says, work it, girl.
As Mo leaves Atlanta on her trek to The City, she obviously calls up her friend Queen Latifah to ask her if she’ll be around for the showcase.

This week, R&B Divas was a whole barrel of drama. Like, drama up the wazoo. Up to our ears in drama. And let me say: some of these ladies are pushin’ it, y’all.
First, in good news, we get to see Faith’s face again, hurrah! I could listen to her calm, raspy voice all day. She’s here to sort out this Syleena-Nicci drama that imploded last episode, and it is going to take some serious doing. Her plan is to add a neutral party to the mix in the form of legendary diva Angie Stone. The idea is that Angie’s seen it all and can bestow some of her wisdom on the feuding divas. Angie says of herself: “Diva is determined, intelligent, victorious Angie.” Respect.
But the first time around that they all meet ends up a little rough. Well, every...

The divas have returned, glory, glory, hallelujah!
If you missed the first season of R&B Divas, it’s a reality show conceived by Faith Evans about a group of, well, R&B divas, getting together to record an album, support each other, and be generally good people (sometimes). Even if you’re not a reality show fan, I can promise you that this one shows more genuine heart than most I’ve seen. While the first season, which aired last year, revolved around the record, this season is set up around the premise of: To Tour or Not To Tour, That is the Question.
The technical title is also now “R&B Divas Atlanta,” since there will also be a new “R&B Divas Los Angeles” airing this summer. But with no offense taken to the City of Angels, honey child, if you’re not in Atlanta,...
