It’s been a decade since Chvrches first released The Bones of What You Believe. Now, the band is honoring their celebrated debut album with a 10th anniversary reissue, which features four previously-unheard songs and five live recordings from 2013.
“It feels quite strange that Bones is almost a decade old,” vocalist Lauren Mayberry said in a statement. “In some ways, it’s like it just happened, but also like that era was a lifetime ago. We are very grateful to all the fans who gave that album a special place in their heart, and still show us so much kindness today.”
One of the newly-unearthed songs is “Manhattan,” which was written right as that era from a “lifetime ago” was first beginning. As the band’s Iain Cook explained, it was the fourth song Chvrches ever worked on. “It was the first time we messed around with sampling and chopping up our vocals,...

Chvrches are gearing up to release a deluxe edition of their debut album The Bones of What You Believe to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Ahead of its release October 13th, they’re sharing “Talking In My Sleep,” a never-before-heard outtake from the era.
Instead of Chvrches’ usual frontperson Lauren Mayberry, “Talking In My Sleep” notably features lead vocals from band member Martin Doherty, delivering haunting lines like “Be the reason for my fear/ And the reason for my smile.” While the upbeat track boasts a lot of the same slightly glitchy, caffeinated synth-pop qualities that make up The Bones of What You Believe, “Talking In My Sleep” offers some interesting backstory of a band beginning to find their sound.
“Some of the main sources of inspiration for our first album, including ‘Talking In My Sleep’ were artists that we all share a love for, and a lot of stuff from the ’80s,...

Life can be a bit of a nightmare, and Chvrches just want you to wake them up when it’s over.
This cathartic portrayal of anguish is at the core of the Scottish trio’s brand new song, “Over,” and it’s one that mirrors the horror-influenced themes of their terrific 2021 LP, Screen Violence. Not only is “Over” the first new Chvrches song in over a year, it’s their first on a new label, Island Records.
“Over” also arrives with a stylish music video that features the band in a tropical climate, playing the song atop a structure with bright lights shining through it. Speaking to Consequence, the band was excited to film a new video with each member in the same place for the first time since their 2018 album, Love Is Dead. “We were all separated for the Screen Violence ones,” says lead vocalist Lauren Mayberry. “They had...

Electro-pop music has finally been justified with the Scottish outfit, Chvrches. The group, which consists of Lauren Mayberry (lead vocals), Iain Cook (multi-instrumentalist, vocals) and Martin Doherty (synthesizers, vocals), doesn’t abuse their instrumental privileges by flooding tunes with clumps and clumps of beats. Instead, the trio has the ideal mix of catchy melodies, memorable lyrics and vocal intonation. Chvrches will be a breakout band of 2013 and their experimental sound will keep them afloat in this industry for many years to come. Let’s address one obvious outlier, the “V”. Chvrches is pronounced as “churches”, but to avoid the Google search clutter, the outfit opted for a letter replacement. Smart and [ Read More ]
