WB Animation’s films and shows have always been streets ahead of DC’s live-action offerings. The studio is known for creating shows such as Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League, as well as films such as The Dark Knight Returns and others. The studio’s latest offering Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths will be wrapping up the Tomorrowverse.
The studio has gone through several franchises such as the Timmverse, Dcamu, and the latest Tomorrowverse. However, one of the most beloved franchises that explored many characters in the DC roster was the Dcamu which ended with Justice League Dark: Apokalips War. One of the reasons why the latter is beloved by fans is due to the ‘no limitations’ rule that the studio had which gave freedom to the writers to hold no bars. Spoilers ahead.

Throughout the years, a lot of stars have portrayed the role of The Dark Knight, aka Batman, in multiple media franchises. However, we have mostly witnessed the character of Bruce Wayne as the Caped Crusader in live-action roles and not many other versions of Batman have made it to the big screen.

The legendary Bruce Timm is known for being the creator behind many of DC’s animated offerings. The ‘Timmverse’ saw a new dimension to characters such as Batman, Superman, and the Justice League, with Batman: The Animated Series being one of the most celebrated shows of all time. Timm was quite literally the Godfather of DC animation.
Despite his prowess and Midas touch, the animator was reportedly not too keen on developing one show that went on to become a cult classic. Batman Beyond, which was an original show that was not based on any comic, was reportedly the product of studio interference, which wanted a young, teenage Batman instead of an aging Bruce Wayne.

During the early days of entertainment when superhero films and TV shows were starting to transition into critical success, Warner Bros. with the Dcau decided to push Batman as the torchbearer for the future of animated series in the franchise.
After the success of Batman: The Animated Series, the cinematic universe decided to expand on the lore of the masked vigilante with their 1999 series Batman Beyond.

This was the show that made the vision of critical superhero masterpieces in entertainment come to fruition, as it won an Emmy Award for its second season. But according to series director James Tucker, the episode that ended up winning the award was something that didn’t make any sense to him, particularly because it wasn’t even in the usual narrative of the series.

DC’s Batman has undoubtedly been one of the most adaptable characters in the history of pop culture, so much so that the character got its own rendition in live-action as well as animated projects. From Tim Burton’s blockbuster films to the 1992 show Batman: The Animated Series, the Caped Crusader witnessed several curves to its character and storyline.

Following the success of the two above-mentioned projects, Batman Beyond hit the television with great reviews. The show featured the return of a retired Bruce Wayne, who passes on the mantle to a teenage hero named Terry McGinnis. Meanwhile, despite the show’s success, the producer of the classic Batman: The Animated Series, Bruce Timm, actually despised the original pitch for Batman Beyond.

Bruce Timm’s Batman Beyond is one of the most timeless animated series that showcases a strong storyline, which has broken all the typical Batman myths with its unique animation style. The series is set in a futuristic Gotham City, showcasing Terry McGinnis under the mantle, under the guidance of an old Bruce Wayne.
Terry McGinnis as Batman in Batman Beyond
The series had taken a bold departure from a traditional narrative, allowing room for exploration of new themes and characters that will retain the character’s popularity. However, the show was a result of an impossible demand that could not be met by Bruce Timm and his team members. None of them wanted to work on a new show, as they were already busy with other important DC projects. Hence, they came up with a great solution, creating one of the greatest Batman shows.

Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, will soon become a TV series on Prime Video.
Prime Video has given a series order to Criminal, nearly a year after it was put on the development fast-track. A writers’ room for the project was put together early last year, but the WGA strike brought development to a halt. Criminal tells “the interweaving saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past.” Ed Brubaker wrote the script for the pilot and will co-showrun the series with Jordan Harper (Hightown). Both will also executive produce alongside Sean Phillips, Sarah Carbiener, Phillip Barnett, and Legendary Television.

In 2017, Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi told a credulous tabloid that he hoped his next project after the Tardis would be a Steven Moffat-written revival of 1970s sitcom On the Buses. “I have got a Blakey in me,” Capaldi assured The Sun, referring to Stephen Lewis’ dyspeptic bus inspector character. Moffat ran with the joke, agreeing whole-heartedly that after Sherlock, bringing back On the Buses would be his natural next move.
Five years later, when Inside No. 9 creators Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton wanted to pull their audience’s leg, On the Buses once again served as a punch line. Among the first look images of series eight was one of the creators and cheeky 1970s sex comedy star Robin Askwith in full On the Buses costume. Finally! If there's one thing we know for certain about Batman, it's that the superhero has only one interpretation that works, and that any deviation from that interpretation will cause all the fans to reject the character outright. There's just no room in this world for funny versions of Batman, or grimdark versions of Batman, or futuristic versions of Batman, or young versions of Batman. At all. Ever.
(Hang on, I'm getting a note from my editor.)
Actually never mind, strike all that entirely. Because the exact opposite is true. Batman is one of the most adaptable characters in pop culture history and has been repeatedly redefined, redesigned, and reintroduced to audiences in a menagerie of different forms. Some were successful and some weren't, but none of them managed to ruin the character of Batman. In time for the digital streaming release of Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, I had the chance to see a digital version of the film which I reviewed here.
Warner Home Entertainment sent out the 4k Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and Digital HD combo pack for further examination. The feature itself is just lovely to watch on 4K, both audio and video are superb.
The real fun this time are the Special Features starting with the DC Showcase: Adam Strange (16:05). J.M. DeMatteis wrote a fine tale, tragically updating the story of the archeologist who found himself becoming the hero of distant Rann. We see Adam (Charlie Weber ) on Rann, too late to stop a Thanagarian attack that seemed to kill his wife, Alanna. A Zeta beam transports him back to an asteroid mining colony located cheekily in Space Sector 24601, where he succumbs to despair and alcohol. Until… It’s an...

Amidst the slew of overkill that formed Justice League Dark: Apokolips War was a memorable moment revealing that John Constantine and King Shark used to be lovers. And although it’s only a brief and throwaway joke that’s never followed up on, the script initially went into much greater detail about it.
It comes up when the shattered remains of the Justice League enlist the help of the Suicide Squad after their disastrous defeat at the hands of Darkseid two years previously. Constantine declares the shark man as his ex, the humor partly coming from Raven’s initial assumption that he’s referring to Harley Quinn.
According to executive producer James Tucker, the exchange had been intended to go into greater detail, as he explained the following:
“I can’t remember exactly what happened to get to that. We were in a room, and when you’re breaking story,...

The team at Warner Animation were enjoying unrivaled success with their 1990s offerings from Animaniacs to Batman: The Animated Series. As a result, as they retired Bats after 65 award-winning episodes, they decided to roll the dice on something bolder. For a change, they were looking to the future and not the comics for inspiration. What if, they wondered, Bruce Wayne aged out of being Batman but the need for the Caped Crusader remained? Who would inherit the mantle of the bat?
As it turns out, they settled on a teen, Terry McGinnis (Will Friedle), to cross paths with Wayne (Kevin Conroy). Where once he relied on Alfred or Oracle for guidance, now he would direct the actions of his unlikely successor in the series Batman Beyond.
Given the futuristic designs and strong storytelling, the audiences proved loyal to the new franchise and the show lasted 52 episodes, spawning fresh merchandising opportunities...

Fans can catch an early glimpse of DC’s animated Reign of the Superman feature at premiere events in NYC and La.
Reign of the Supermen will please an enthusiastic fandom with whom this past summer’s DC animated epic, The Death of Superman, resonated, having captured the original pop-culture-proliferating 1992 comic book storyline to a poignant tee. Indeed, Reign, adapting DC’s follow-up storyline that – after less than a year – built up to the resurrection of the martyred Man of Steel, will similarly put a classic comic through a modernized lens; one that certain proactive fans will be able to watch early at a bicoastal premiere screening event!

Doomsday. The unstoppable engine of destruction also appears to be the unstoppable antagonist having been a regular in the comics since 1992 and brought to the animated and live-action films. The sheer power on display is catnip and allows DC Comics’ most powerful figure to go mano y mano.
The DC Animated Universe of direct-to-video films has been uneven, usually a result of either poor writing, bad directing, or off-putting character design. After witnessing the likes of Justice League, Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Beware the Batman being granted Blu-ray releases, fans have probably wondered what’s been the holdup when it comes to Batman: The Animated Series getting the same treatment. Granted, those other shows are more recent and require less in the way of remastering, but that doesn’t change the fact that many of us have been waiting impatiently for such a thing to happen.
Fortunately, San Diego Comic-Con brought us confirmation that the series responsible for first introducing us to Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill’s respective versions of Batman and the Joker will, in fact, be coming to Blu-ray on October 16th.
To start you off, here’s what to expect from the Deluxe Limited Edition that’ll be restricted to 30,000 copies:

When it comes to characters that we love, you’ll probably agree with me in saying that we all possess some vague memory of how we were exposed to them. As a lifelong fan of Batman, I can at least remember that Adam West was my introduction to the Dark Knight (or Bright Knight, in this case). Honestly, I can’t properly recall if it was via the TV show from the ’60s or the Super Friends animated series, but either way, he was my first Batman.
Having confessed that, you can imagine that I was quite thrilled when West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar reprised their roles of Batman, Robin and Catwoman, respectively, in last year’s Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders. Not only did returning in animated form allow them to defy Father Time, but it also showed us what that world looks like when freed of...

The Batman vs. Two-Face animated movie nearly invited Poison Ivy to the special guest batvillain party.
Warner Bros. has been fulfilling longtime Batman fan dreams for the last year. After first reuniting Adam West, Burt Ward, and Julie Newmar for Batman: Return Of The Caped Crusaders, they immediately revealed the news that they'd be bringing one of the greatest Batman villains to never appear on the original TV series to the screen, with this year's Batman vs. Two-Face. Not only that, they got the legendary William Shatner to voice the dual role of Harvey Dent and Two-Face.
There are a handful of iconic Batman villains of the era who never joined the ranks of Joker, Riddler, Catwoman, Penguin, or Mr. Freeze on TV. Scarecrow, Two-Face, and Poison Ivy were all around during the era of the Batman TV series, but never made the jump to live action as "special guest batvillains.

Last year, Warner Bros. treated us with the awesome Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, which saw the likes of Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar reprise their roles of Batman, Robin and Catwoman, respectively. Being essentially the beginning to a fourth season we never received, it surpassed expectations by retaining the feel of the classic 1960’s television series, while also featuring grandiose action scenes that could’ve never been accomplished on the budget of the show.
Having said that, we’re thrilled to see that its sequel, Batman vs. Two-Face, looks like it may be even better. In addition to the return of the aforementioned actors, expect William Shatner to lend his pipes to the dichotomous Harvey Dent, a character who never actually appeared on the TV show itself during its original run.
As for the rest of the major players, here goes: Jeff Bergman (Joker, Bookworm, Desmond Dumas), Sirena Irwin (Dr.

There are typically a lot of Batmen at Comic-Con, but only one was the subject of a star-filled tribute.
Filmmaker Kevin Smith, producer James Tucker, actors Ralph Garman and Lee Meriwether, and about a thousand fans paid tribute to the late Adam West at the pop culture convention Thursday night.

Well, it’s about time. For the last twenty-five years or so, we’ve had one animated Batman series after another but to be honest only two are really good: Batman the Animated Series and Batman: The Brave and the Bold. The latter has been slowly coming out on Blu-Ray with season one in 2013 and season two in 2015. This month, we’re getting the third and final season and the good news is that it is as entertaining as remembered.
After increasingly odd interpretations of Batman, Warner Animation decided to go retro and bring back the Batman of the 1960s, who was not afraid to operate in daylight and would partner with just about anyone in a mask as the need arose. Producer James Tucker saw to it that it honored the comic the series took its name from while modernizing it with contemporary characters and characterizations. The result was...

Animated fare was very slow to integrate, largely because there was a paucity of useful source material to mine from. In the 1990s, that began to change, largely thanks to Milestone Media, a multicultural operation that had a line of comics distributed through DC Comics.
Milestone’s best known character is Static, a young urban teen with a definite modern-day Peter Parker vibe to him. Virgil Hawkins just wanted live his life when he was accidentally exposed to mutagen gas, giving him electromagnetic powers. Donning a self-made outfit, he protected his corner of the ‘Hood as Static.
The show arrived in 2000 with a bang and became a cause because it not only featured a positive image of a black male, but closely resembled the source material thanks to Milestone co-creators Dwayne McDuffie and Denys Cowan being heavily involved in the show. If anything, 2017 is going to have quite the steady stream of DC animated films, with the next one up being Teen Titans: The Judas Contract. Loosely adapting the classic storyline of the same name written by Marv Wolfman and illustrated by George Perez, it’ll see some of the most beloved young heroes in all of comics face their biggest challenges yet, namely Brother Blood and Deathstroke.
While many of us have to wait for a home video release to enjoy the movie, those fortunate enough to attend WonderCon in Anaheim, California in a few weeks will have the opportunity to attend the world premiere. You see, on Friday, March 31 at 6:00pm, a screening will take place in the Arena of the Anaheim Convention Center, complete with panel afterwards. Should you miss out on that, an encore will be shown on Sunday, April 2 (also in the Arena), but with no panel to follow.

Batman & Robin has a lot to answer for. Almost 20 years after its release, Joel Schumacher's brightly-coloured art nouveau confection is widely acknowledge as the nadir of the cinematic Bat-canon, even though that canon has very recently incorporated the DC Extended Universe entries, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and the Academy Award-winning* Suicide Squad.
