Exclusive: Prime Video’s teams in Africa and the Middle East & North Africa region are facing layoffs, as part of a wider restructure that also “rebalances” investment towards Amazon’s European content division.
The move will split Europe in two clusters and see “emerging” territories such as Benelux, the Cee and the Nordics get new investment, with funding for African and Mena slashed. In the past hour, Prime Video’s VP & Gm for Emea, Barry Furlong, has outlined the raft of changes to staff in a memo seen by Deadline.
Among the decisions, which are being defined as a “rebalance” of resources, Prime Video will create two European clusters, EU Established (EU5) and EU Emerging (Eux), with new roles for several execs.
This impacts the Sub-Saharan Africa and Mena, which will see investment decrease to what are being described as “prior levels.”

Amazon-owned Prime Video is to change its content strategy in Southeast Asia from a model based on original productions to one focused instead on licensing. As a result it has cut some jobs in the region.
The move follows last week’s announcement of a restructuring and several hundred job cuts in North America at Prime Video and the Amazon-owned MGM.
“Today we have made the decision to discontinue some programs and initiatives, and rebalance our international organization to focus on the countries and regions driving the most growth for our service. In Apac, we are decreasing investments in South East Asia (Sea) and moving to a leaner local operating model to support the Sea territories. David Simonsen will continue to lead this leaner Singapore based Sea team, working even more closely with our centralized business teams, as we continue to attract new customers in the region. Exclusive: Amazon Prime Video Southeast Asia is cutting its originals team in Singapore and moving to a “leaner operating model,” as part of the global wave of redundancies announced earlier this week.
Deadline has seen an internal note from Prime Video’s VP, Asia Pacific, Gaurav Gandhi (see below), which confirms the streamer is “decreasing investments in Southeast Asia (Sea) and moving to a leaner local operating model to support the Sea territories.”
In effect, this means an exit from the local originals game and a major reduction in headcount at the Singapore office, with almost all staff from this side of the business to exit. We understand programs and films from the region set to launch for this year and 2025 or in production are unaffected. They will continue to filter through, but no new originals are coming.

As Amazon Prime Video closes in on six years of operations in India, it is one of the market leaders in the streaming segment. A major part of the success is due to it getting a handle on the multiple local languages in the vast market.
“One of the things we look at when we expand into new territories and languages is to see early signs and then double down on those early signs,” Gaurav Gandhi, VP, Amazon Prime Video India told Variety. The service programs in 10 languages in India, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Bengali and English.
“When we started programming in 10 languages we saw early signs before most others how content travels across languages,” says Gandhi, who spoke on the sidelines of the Apos conference in Singapore. “Today, 50 of our audience base is watching content in four plus languages, which was not the case three or four years back.

Exclusive: Amazon Prime Video India bosses Aparna Purohit and Gaurav Gandhi have outlined their strategy for super-serving the country’s diverse audiences, and revealed a plan to push into true crime and investigative doc series.
In their first interview since unveiling a 40-strong slate of original films and TV shows in April, the pair said constantly engaging with the “well developed creative ecosystems” in India’s various language segments, which include Hindi and Tamil, has been key to the Amazon Prime Video’s local impact since launching there more than five years ago.
In practice, Country Head Gandhi said this involved considerable research and insight gathering to assess what original films and shows could cut through locally and then assessing how that could transcend cultural barriers.
“Each segment is looked at in isolation first to see if we can super-serve an audience — maybe young adults or women, for example,” he said.

Following yesterday’s news that Amazon Prime Video India had made its biggest direct-to-service movie acquisition with the Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana comedy Gulabo Sitabo, the streamer has unveiled a further six local titles that will debut exclusively on the platform.
The six movies all would have been theatrical releases, were it not for the ongoing cinema closures in India due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, Amazon has stepped in to give them a home, and will premiere each title on its platform in 200 countries over the next three months.
The films span five Indian languages. They include Anu Menon’s mathematician biopic Shakuntala Devi starring Vidya Balan and produced by Abundantia Entertainment, legal drama Ponmagal Vandhal starring Jyothika (Chandramukhi), and Penguin starring Keerthy Suresh (Mahanati).
Last month, Deadline interviewed Shakuntala Devi producer Vikram Malhotra about how the Indian market is coping with the pandemic, during...
